Wow! That brings back some memories. My Dad was an electrical engineer for HP in those days and he worked on that project (and many others). I got to see prototypes of this calculator and we even had a "terminal" (like a desktop computer) that we had to connect to the mainframe computer by putting the handset of our phone in a cradle modem. No one had a home PC in those days.

You are correct, that machine is for sharpening knives. I used to use an older version when I worked at a knife store. You have to be VERY careful not to let the blade overheat. Keep a quench tray and rag nearby to keep the blade cool. They overheat quickly.

I hope you have a chain and padlock to secure that vise. There are members here who'll be hunting you to get to it.

Nice vise. Anybody know the correct way to use that oil fitting? I bought an arbor press at a sale and it has those kind of fittings on it, are you supposed to use a needle oiler or is there a special oil can intended for these?

Edit: Aarg, I quoted the wrong post, I meant to quote Dafefr's post with the pic of his new Craftsman vise in it.

Show-off ! :lol_hitti

Wasn't my intention!!!

I just took the craftsman ratchet and the proto ratchet apart for a cleaning. Both was very dry and the proto's screw was stripped so I need to source some screw for it if it all cleans up well.

I'm actually surprised nobody mentioned anything about the Craftsman whitworth 1/2" and 9/16" wrench as that was a popular thread earlier this week.

Got two cool pieces at yard sales today. I found a Liberty tool chest with an awesome leather handle. The guy running the yard sale said "I'll take 5 bucks for that" before I even got a good look at it. Of course I bought it. I picked it up and knew right away it was a little too heavy. So I told him "I think there are some tools inside". He couldn't possibly have cared less. He actually said, " You bought it it's yours". Hmmm . . . well, if he insists then O.K. by me! Some nice CMan screwdrivers - one an old Super Tuff - and some hex keys and one Snap on 1/2" socket. Score!

#2 was a Mr. Beer kit with enough ingredients for 4 gallons of beer. $8 Double score!

Man times have changed, according to Wikipedia that thing cost $195 when it came out in '76, that was my parents' monthly house payment back then!

You scored big time on that tool box. Anything with a leather handle is old and it looks to be in good condition. Even more amazing it it still has the original top tray. Most boxes this age (possibly pre-WWII) have long lost the top tool tray.
5 buck with all the tools. you definitely **** on that deal.

Went to 4 sales today, of course only one had any tools. It was 75 percent off day so I got everything pictured for a grand total of $5.25!!

Nice scores. I hope you at least felt a little tinge of guilt for that highway robbery. I don't think I've ever encountered a combination lock that I could use.

I leave you with this single photo of one of the item i bought today while I go to walmart to buy my girls first day of school outfit and church!

Can you see why I jumped on it for $20 without getting to look through it?

Madison: I've seen great tools in zip lock bags, but never an old tool box in saran wrap. so you'll have to show us what's inside or i'll double your money and come pick it up and see what surprises await.

looks like a proto or plumb ratchet and maybe a full socket set and of course the little metal box might have a gem or two in it. nice score and another thumbs up for getting it on the way to take care of your little girl.

ALL: i think i might have missed looking at this thread for a couple weekends so have a lot of catching up to do because there were a ton of nice scores. great job saving these old tools guys and hopefully some will look great in your tool boxes.

what a score today! come up to a guy that had a huge amount of tools just in crates everywhere. people were digging through them like mad. everyone had a handful of tools. it was insane. one guy i see at the flea all the time will turn stuff down for a dollar, and he had a handful of stuff and was still getting it. i figured it had to becheap, so i just found a hole and started grabbing what other people were tossing to the side. one guy had to have at least 20 combo wrenches. i saw a few were williams superwrench.

tools ended up being 10 for a dollar. screwdrivers are snap on, craftsman cman pro, husy pro, witte, matco, most all the extensions i got are duro or indestro super. all of the wrenches are proto professional. got one brand new 12mm proto long pattern anti slip. insane. mac 15/16 boxed. bonney double box. i need to look through it. i just grabbed whatever. i waited till the crowd died down and picked through it some more, but most were all china and broken tools left. got a couple sets of vise grips as well, but i left them in the truck when i took the picture.

also picked up a nice portable cantilever park toolbox. id guess it was 60's? i thought i snapped a pic, but ill have to get another. its got surface rust, but pretty nice box for 3 bucks. i couldnt pass it up!

They seriously covered the box in plastic to keep people from looking? :wtf:

Definitely worth getting, but :wtf:

I see it all the time. Usually it is a clear plastic container with a bunch of junk tools and one or two "good things" that they want like $30+ for. "Will not separate"

BTW, you freaking **** on that channellock/knipex for $1.50

Old CM vise. I haven't seen this style before with a lube port in the dynamic jaw. It's quite heavy for it's size. (4"). It was $20:

Awesome, I think the front screw eye is so cool on those with the large taper and grooves. $20 well spent

Reason for taping the top up with clear tape and sticking a $20 on it was it was the only toolbox there! Plus they wanted the tools gone and didn't want people to pick and choose the tools over. I was behind 2 people to this estate sale and they passed the tool box up.

When I closed the lid I saw the heritage logo and didn't think anymore!
img_2557.jpg

Inside the little Craftsman box was a 1/4" Drive craftsman socket set!!!
img_2561.jpg

Very rough logo,
img_2562.jpg

All of the Craftsman tool laid out!
img_2564.jpg

And hardly any tools that's not USA made unless it's germany or Swiss made!
img_2565.jpg

That toolbox was the second stop and I also got these mason jar to put $6 extra on the tab.
img_2555.jpg

Then the first stop was at 7am as I was pulling up while they were bringing stuff out of the house!
img_2556.jpg

Some spring clamps, a Bessler? clamp, extension cord, and a flush saw for $5.

All in all a good day! I got to finish painting the girls bedroom so the tools will have to wait some more. Why did they pick one wall to be pink, one wall to be purple, one wall to be white and one wall to be chalk board black????:lol_hitti:willy_nil

Couple of finds today

Not much of a garage-saler usually, but my buddy told me about one locally that he had been to a few times already this weekend, lots of tools. So I took a ride with him this morning.

It's amazing what some people have. This guy had tons of iron - hand tools, machinist's tool's, several metal lathes, 20 or more vises of all shapes and sizes and brands, etc., etc. Too much to take in all at once.

Not wanting to break the bank, I picked up just two things - a nice FAMCO 3/4 Ton arbor press Model E - excellent condition, and a nice little Starrett combo square 9" - bubble level is broken out of it but otherwise quite good. $30 total.

I'd been looking for a small benchtop arbor press - the guy had a much larger one sitting out, I simply asked him if he had any more, and he did! Just cleaned it a bit with oil so far - will probably paint it up at some point.

Nice grab I make a nice tidy tool fund selling those on ebay thats a 300.00 calc if it works

Thanks. Yes, it works!

Here's my favorite. It's an HP 65 manufacturing prototype in a clear case. They did prototyping in clear cases to see how everything fit before going into production. (before the days of sophisticated CAD tools).

The HP 65 was programmable with an integrated magnetic card reader. The Apollo astronauts used an HP 65 as a backup for the spacecraft's on-board NAVcomputers.

I found this one at a G-sale a couple years ago. We pulled up and it was obvioulsy a "girly" sale so I stayed in the car. My wife came and got me and told me I better go upstairs to have a look. It was the estate of an ex HP engineer and he had a box full of vintage HP calulators including this one:

Veto was overruled by Momma :p

I wasn't motivated to hit the flea market today and that turned out to be a big mistake!

I saw lots of new vendors with great looking old tools that you had to dig through for the best stuff.

All of this is from one guy and it was the leftovers after sitting out for 6+ hours. Not bad but I can only imagine what he had:sad: which was cornwell and lots of snap on, SK and underline Craftsman

All Plomb and one brand new Starrett dividers

The two YS's that made me late for the FM this morning were a bust. They weren't worth the gas to go to them. The flea market started out good. I began with a baggie full of brown rotoloc pads for 50¢ each. I grabbed all she had for $13.

Then after checking out aaaaaaaaaall the other tables, I ran into a seller that I knew had high prices. I usually pass his table since I know that he charges eBay collector prices for tools he doesn't even bother to clean or degrease. This time I decided to check it out. I found a 4" Cresent adjustable wrench, a pair of 4LN 4" Peterson/Dewitt visegrips, and a small 4" machinist's square with both the 90° and 45° heads. When I asked his price I expected it to be high, but when he said $85 !!!! I nearly shat myself. Needless to say, I walked away from the table empty-handed as quickly as I could.

So - other than some polishing supplies, my day was a bust.

Since the lever is pressed out it seems, the prawl can't come out.

Oh and this has Taiwan on it. I figured it was some valve tool.

Fell behind the past couple weeks here. Didn't have much luck last week, and I was pretty worried about this week. First stop Saturday morning:
The third day of an Estate Sale. Paid $10 for everything in the next 2 photos.

SK Socket set box, SK 3/8 ratchet and extension, Walden-Worcester long offset DBE, short DBEs by Indestro and Barcalo. Groups of sockets include: set of 3/8" drive Par-X, 4 C-man 3/8" drive, 2 Master Mechanic USA, 1 SO, 2 Indestro, 1 Husky, 1 SK, Part of an old Husky 1/2" drive set, 3 Wartime Duro-Indestro sockets, 2 more miscellaneous old Indestro sockets, 2 Cman =V= 1/2" drive sockets, 1 Husky deep well, and 1 Tru-Test 3/8" drive.
Also, this Craftsman Crown Pipe Threading set:

Second stop was a garage sale, in an apartment complex. Surprised to go to two good sales at apartments in 1 season...

Ray pressed steel socket set, Craftsman molding cutter set, SK 1/4" drive set (looks nearly unused), needlenose pliers by Utica, Craftsman, Boker, and Klein. Slip-joint pliers by Baracalo and Diamond, a 17mm Gearwrench (needed one of these!), =V= Craftsman 1/2" drive extension and a 3/4" drive socket, 1/4" breaker bars by Craftsman =v= and Indestro, 2 SK Wayne combos, and 2 SK Lectrolite combos.

Hit a few estate sales with my buddy Thursday.

First one had quite a bit of tools, picked up a few goodies for decent prices.
Small Channelocks, Craftsman C-underline miter gauge for tablesaw, Crown label offset screwdriver and Router bit case with bits, 4 Craftsman wrenches, chisel, V-selector 1/2 ratchet, Crescent adjustable, Husky 1/4 spinner with the female rive in the head, Indestro 1/2" breaker bar, Milwaukee hole saws, Snap On scratch awl, part of a Stanley plane, railroad anvil, first aid kit and Wilton made in USA utility vise. $58 total

Second one was higher priced and not much tools but still found some goodies.
2 Kraueter pliers, 2 Herbrand adjustable wrenches, Craftsman Vanadium pliers and Vanadium screwdriver, USA black/yellow screwdriver, S-K Tools #3 Phillips, new wire brush. $12 total.

Flea market I picked up an old cash out counter, grocery store? Thinking about using it for a bar. $55

After my buddy left I hit a few pawn shops.

1st one Snap On ratcheting screwdriver, Craftsman USA made router bits, 1 3/4" 3/4 drive socket AND a decent working 1/4HP round top block grinder. $44 total

2nd one Proto 3/4 ratchet that needs a rebuild kit, $5.

Today I bought
snap on five piece file set
Snap on vise grip set
Bluepoint three piece metric calipers
bluepoint digital caliper
bluepoint snap ring pliers.
all in cases or wraps.
a few other things I've forgotten about.

A ladder
a nice step type ladder
a craftsman floor jack.

All unused
$60
She wanted less. I gave her what I had on me and will sell the stuff on here and give her the balance.

My question;
Internets disclaim that there are counterfeit snap on and blue point and according to a search I did here no one has ever actually produced a counterfeit.

Man, There better be some counterfeits out there. Because if this is what they are selling on trucks...the HF calipers is nicer and the cheap bin tools at a hardware store are as nice as the vise grips.
Alltrade has licence from snap on on some china tools. Compressors knives tape measures lights etc. Not sure a out vise grips

picked up the lot from CL today and... wow! I usually cringe if I drop $125, but think I made out pretty well for the hefty sum.

Random box with some miscellaneous sockets/wrenches... was told it was the "no name" box, but I already found a Snap On socket, a Williams adjustable, and a Pennen's wrench. The SK set... wow! I've been building this set for two years now! Knurled satin bottoms! Nearly complete minus the one Husky socket, ratchet, breaker bar, and the slide bar for the breaker as well!

Then there's this box... easily weighing in at 60LB's!

Never saw a CMan long handled flying V ratchet! then there's the BE female drive 1/2" w/ adapter, a SO ratcheting adapter, a ton of wrenches including a set or two of the ratcheting wrenches, a 50's dogbone, CMan BE deep sockets, and a ton more!

The "tee" thing somewhat looks like a "tuck fork".
Used in sheet metal forming as the first step in shrinking metal.
Tweek the metal up by slipping the prongs over the edge, twist left, then twist right.
Then beat the raised metal into itself on a stump or leather shotbag.
"Somewhat" because tuck fork prongs are usually closer together, but it's from Taiwan, so ?
