I really like that fan, if I were to use it, I would do something to ensure that any children, pets, et al would be protected from having some part of their bodies being damaged.

Paul

No kids and just a chihuahua so keeping the fan off the floor is the only thing needed to prevent injuries.

The Waterston's stamped tack hammer above is interesting. For many years, there was a store here in the Detroit area called Waterston's that sold precision tools. I wasn't aware of the hammers 'til now. There was plenty of call here for magnetic tack hammers in the auto industry when the bodies and seats were framed with wood, and the trimmers were known as "tack-spitters" because they'd get a mouthful of tacks and use the magnetic end of the hammer to fetch the tacks out as they worked on the upholstery.

The hammer belonged to the guy at the sales father. He described how his father would hold tacks in his mouth as he was working on upholstery! The magnetic end was pretty weak but then I found that the slit in the hammer was full of metal shavings. Cleaned those out and the magnetic end got plenty strong. It was clear the son was not a tool guy. He had repaired the loose hammerhead by pounding in a bunch of finish nails in place of the wedge that had gone missing and even then the head was still loose. Had to take it off and put a proper wedge in there and now its nice and solid.

Lantern also works great after dumping out the car gas. Put in some Coleman fuel, put a new mantle on and it lit right up. :rocker:

Just found this thread, and yard sales are the Saturday morning thing.

Recent finds:

"Want some rulers for 5 bucks?" "Sure." On later inspection, all Lee Valley.

Picked up an International two box tool chest for $100. These, happily, were in the bottom drawer along with a 100' Lufkin tape measure, and shined up and gave away the chest to a makerspace. Does anyone know if they were Record blue originally?

Found this for 5 bucks. I liked the condition of the leather.

A Rabone No. 1526 level, found in the very bottom of an old toolbox in a roadside yard sale. $3. Refinished by my father. Even managed to keep the decal mostly intact.

And we shall see what tomorrow brings.

Nice score on the B&S callipers. not sure how the dial is off, can't you just zero the dial and go? The rest is rack and pinion along the track in the groove of the rule.

Dave the dial looks fine - that set screw on the bottom of the crystal bezel is for zeroing the caliper. loosen, twist. and tighten (Make sure the caliper faces are clean and closed...)

Nice score on both! ammo ain't cheap anymore!

Yeah, I know how to loosen the dial face to spin it to zero where the needle is...guess I should have been more clear.

The needle should point straight up at the 12 o'clock when closed, the needle on these when fully closed is about 12 and a half thou from the top, roughly 11 o'clock.

Usually this is an indication of tool abuse, I think the only way the needle can be off like this is for the pinion gear to have skipped a tooth on the rack. Usually caused by being dropped, used as a hammer, or getting chips in the rack groove. These are in very good shape, no evidence of being dropped, so I am betting a metal chip got in there and made it skip a tooth.

On some older Mitutoyo dial calipers, they actually gave you a very thin piece of brass shim that you could stick in the mechanism to make it skip again, if you were patient enough you could get the needle to zero back at 12 o'clock after a few tries. I tried that with these and they are built backwards of Mitutoyo so you can't get the shim in there. It looks like the only way to "fix" it is to take the bezel and needle off, and replace the needle at 12 o'clock.

This is only a problem because I am ocd about such things. However I have never had good luck taking bezels off indicators and calipers, so I think I will just have to live with it for now.

Thanks. Yes, it works!

Here's my favorite. It's an HP 65 manufacturing prototype in a clear case. They did prototyping in clear cases to see how everything fit before going into production. (before the days of sophisticated CAD tools).

The HP 65 was programmable with an integrated magnetic card reader. The Apollo astronauts used an HP 65 as a backup for the spacecraft's on-board NAVcomputers.

I found this one at a G-sale a couple years ago. We pulled up and it was obvioulsy a "girly" sale so I stayed in the car. My wife came and got me and told me I better go upstairs to have a look. It was the estate of an ex HP engineer and he had a box full of vintage HP calulators including this one:

I have one of those thread chasers. The Walden ratchet is for HVAC work turning service port valves.

It's Lista time! Picked up the Lista's today, 5 each!
Plus a Husky Ball bearing toolbox, made in Canada, I wonder if this is the one same as a Mac?

I was contacted this last weekend by the family of Mustang guy who had bought a few parts off of me. They were settling his estate and wanted me to pick up some early 1990's Fox chassis Mustangs so they could get the place cleaned up. A friend and I did so on Monday, both 4 cylinder cars, first one was rough and went straight to the scrapper, second one we pulled some front body parts off of and scrapped it on Wednesday. We then went back out to the place because there was some stuff I was interested in. My buddy bought some stuff and I talked to one of the guys and he said I could take all the scrap too! Mustang parts everywhere, a lot of it just stock junk. I bought some rear axles and he opened up the locked 10 x 18 storage shed. First thing I see is the 5 green Lista's! Made a deal with him for them and the Husky roller toolbox. They took out most of the good tools but there are still lots of odds and ends in everything to go through.

Thursday I went by myself and loaded up a lot of scrap and took it straight to the scrap yard.

Today me and my friend went and picked up the Lista's and Husky toolbox. Hot and muggy in full sun or crammed in the stuffy storage shed we were getting wore out fast! We were going to unload at my place but just to wore out. After we ate and I dropped him off at home and I rested for a few hours in the AC. I got my second wind and pulled out the old tanker desk and Craftsman workbench I was replacing with the Lista and got the Lista cabinets put in just before the rain hit. Only a few pics right now, had to cram everything back in the shop due to the rain and can't even walk by the Lista's right now LOL

Check out the before pics of the shop, the cool caster jack device to move the Listas around if needed and the "installed" pic.

And the price? $300 for ALL 5 Lista's including the caster jacks, a 4" long metal bench top, TWO 6" long butcherblcok tops, a Lista end leg for a workbench and $100 for the Husky toolbox.

And yes I am only using 4 of the 5 Lista's so far. Trying to decide if I sell the fifth one or turn it into a welding bench with the caster jacks for mobility. Decisions decisions!

BB: congrats on getting all that back home. you might want to put your feet up now and take a breather. those are not light cabinets empty even with a fancy little cart.

nice improvement on the old desk and things that now have the listas and the butcher block top.

Here's pics in the dark of the one I am not using yet LOL. Look at the corner tabs on the box that the jack fits into, you can easily lower the jack down more and slip it out and use it on another cabinet. If all your cabinets have the corner tabs and they are not jammed up too close together it would be easy to move al the cabinets, assembled with tops and with all contents in them (all mine did, I removed them on the benches I set up for better fit since I hopefully will never move them for a long time)

Nice haul! Lotsa good stuff in there...

That toolbox was built for a specific purpose, methinks it was military or government in origin, just a hunch because all the "custom purpose" toolboxes I have ever owned were originally for the military.

Only one hit today. A 25" 60-tooth saw blade with a 1-3/8" arbor for $10. It'll be a great piece of wall art for the shop.

Had 3 stops this week that I was able to pick up some tools.
First stop on Thursday after work netted a few wrenches,a Proto extension and a Vaco replaceable tip screwdriver. All for $7.50. The seller had a fair amount of MAC metric tools but the prices were very close,if not over the top of the eBay scale.
044.jpg
The next sale was across town last night and I was stuck in holiday/rush hour traffic Rickster managed to get there before I did and probably bought a thing or two.I was able to walk away with the Snap On hex wrench set, a mess of SK replaceable bit screwdrivers,a few 1/4" extensions from Craftsman,SK and a Snap On that Rick missed, couple SK sockets that I didn't have ,a Diamond adjustable and a pair of snap ring pliers. Total cost was $62.
034.jpg
036.jpg
035.jpg

Third sale was up at dawn to be there at 7:30. I bought a Snap On KR-657PA that needs some slides replaced,a 1/2" dr metric shallow set of SO sockets(still new in pkg.),a set of 1/2" dr metric deep SO sockets, a 6 piece set of Cornwell torx drivers, a Yost No.32 swivel vise, a few Mac and Snap On wrenches,a MAC screwdriver bit set,a Snap On continuity tester and a Ridge Tool Co. No 61CP swivel bench vise that I am waiting for assistance to unload and photograph.Today's bill was $475 :(

BB that's a Usuck; but you knew that didn't you?

Great Score!

I am not done yet either LOL.

I made a tad over $400 for three days of work getting rid of the scrap cars and other scrap. So that paid for the Lista's and Husky. :bounce:

And I still have to go through the boxes and see what they left. Lots of small Mustang parts that are worth a few bucks. Plus I have more stuff to post up.

There is a fair amount of suckage in this find! I already see a plvmb/proto ratchet, lots of taps, etc. Well worth the $40. What brand are the sockets? Is there other plvmb in there? Looks like there is more in the mix.

That is indeed a Plvmb 3/8 Ratchet. There are also a few Plvmb punches and sockets.

The rest of the sockets are a collection of Williams, Armstrong, and Craftsman. The taps & dies are mostly Greenfield and range from 1/4" to 1".

I passed on an early Snap On 3/8 driver set (ratchet/speeder/extensions) as it was over priced and rough, and missing a few bits. May head back later to see if it is still there.

Congrats!! That's bound to be one of the summer's best you *****.

Labor day sales were pretty slow so it was a quick run today. All this including the Cole cabinet was $12.00. (from a private estate sale)

Dave: nice pictures as usual. i really like that pan of heavy duty chrome pics which you don't see often almost as much as your Cole cabinet. did you forget to put a 1 in front of the $12 because you couldn't have got all that for $12?

BB: looks like you spent your time wisely the past few days.

Thanks, it was a son who was clearing out his dad's home and he wanted stuff gone quickly. He was literally giving stuff away.

Private estate sales where the immediate family is doing all the selling is the best kind IMHO.

It's been a while, but I got to get out there for a little bit today. Only ended up going to the local FM.

The first vendor was one that I've bought from before. Nothing special, but when someone says "2 tools for a dollar" they have my attention. Got the files mainly for the handles, the piece of the combination square because it looks brand new, and the DOE Craftsman wrench because for .50 why not

photo1_zps2c65bc27.jpg

The next lot was pulled from a misc. box of junk. DOE SK wrench, Plomb ignition wrenches, 2x Craftsman 1/2" sockets and a 9/16" Wright socket. $4

photo2_zps83e9f7f9.jpg

The next few things were in a Kennedy box that was priced a little high for my taste at $65 (missing a drawer and the front cover). The price was without the tools inside so I figured I'd see if I could do any cherry picking. Found the Brown & Sharpe center gauge, some hand reamers and this cool metal ratcheting driver. $15

photo3_zpsf8a0bed0.jpg

Cool lightsaber looking driver.

photo1_zps21aad6c5.jpg

I looked around on the interwebs and I can't find anything on the driver. There's no markings on it at all. Anyone seen anything like it?

The hand reamers are another interesting find. I am just starting to build my tooling collection and reamers are something that I don't have yet, and don't know much about. I didn't notice until I got home that they were metric. Then I started seeing that they were funny sizes like 7.1 & 10.6. Well, from what I can tell, they are oversized/undersized reamers and they sell for a pretty penny on ebay. Haven't decided yet if I want to keep them or sell them and buy reamers that I would actually use.

Last vendor had sockets that I could see from 50 feet away. Big ol' 3/4" sets. I'm not in the market, and didn't bring much cash with me today, so I didn't even bother asking the prices. I did get this sweet 3/8" metric SK set (2 Cman fillers) for $10. Just need to find a 16 & 18mm deep to return it back to a full set unless I'm missing something else.

photo2_zps458c9788.jpg

Thanks all for now!

I got a Alabama game on right now so when the game is at half time I'll see if i can sneak a few pictures. But that craftsman socket set was basically a complete 1/2", 3/8", 1/4" socket set with a lot of the tools (extension, sliders, ratchet, breaker, and speed wrench) the box was in great shape! The guy said he bought it all and hardly used it and the bottom of the toolbox outside speaks volume on what he said as it was in great shape!

Oh and the breaker bars had the slide bar you place in the hole......I hardly see these!!!

OK, it was a tough week, and a long morning today yardsailing, and I crashed and burned and needed about a 2-3 hour nap this afternoon, but I finally have the energy to post today's pics.

A great start: A nice (Never used?) 6-1/2" Bowie with brass cross hilt and pommel, and cheaper folding machete/Bowie knife Pakistan, but the price was right: $3 each!

attachment.php

All of two bucks for a Wrist Rocket (Needs replacement surgical tubing and pocket) and 2 Stanley replacement tapes - a 30 footer for sure and probably a 25.

attachment.php

Several different stops: $5 for the Plvmb DBE, WF rat, Proto DOE, and Long C Craftsman 1/4" extension; and a buck for the Mayhew 1" Chisel; $3 for the pulaski head. this one is a True Temper and has traces of red paint on it, so not USFS issue.

attachment.php

$2 for a full or near full case of 100 Syringes;

attachment.php

$10 for the 2 Camp hatchets: A Vintage Western in pretty good shape, and a Smith and Wesson some fool took a DA to...

attachment.php

A cute little crossbow pistol with half a dozen quarrels for $3

attachment.php

This Morgan Vise was marked for $25; I offered 20 and he accepted! :D ; Post 70's Milwaukee:

attachment.php

$20 for the good Craftsman 5191 Vise; Guy told me he wanted it gone, so that was his price! I think this one is late 50's I haven't found the date code yet.

attachment.php

$5 for a Packard 1/4 HP motor; this one will land on one of the small DP's, possibly the Craftsman Mod 80. I first thought it was marked Atlas until I got my readers on. :spit:

attachment.php

Not pictured: a sack of Votive Candles for a buck
