EPIQ Workbench Build

I've been holding out on you guys...the past few weeks I've been working on what I dub my "EPIQ Workbench" for good reason...she will be rocking an EPIQ Drawer.
Bench is constructed of 3" Square Tubing Legs, 4000lb Pallet Racking Cross Beams...lower shelf designed so I can easily pick up & move the bench with my pallet jack. NOW its time to mount the drawer....just taking some measurements (measure 3x cut/drill/grind & weld once kinda guy). So I noticed the slides are mounted at an angle on the drawers...now, in my pea brain, I assume the other side of the slides gets mounted at a similar angle so the drawer sits level...now is my thinking correct? So when you open the drawer you essentially pull it "up hill" and the drawer stays level the whole time.

Secondly...EPIQ owners...do your drawers self close? just thinking with as much rake as the slides have, a fully loaded drawer must close VERY Easily if not by itself? :headscrat

According to the snap-on videos the Epiq drawers have a degree or two of slope so they close all the way with a little push.

fast forward to about 5:30

Little update...been plugging along as time allows. This weekend I got the drawer mounted up. Got some final welding to do on the drawer, but the end is in sight!

I haveva spare top drawer from a krl722 i wanna do the same thing with. Just gotta find the time. Looks good.

Thanks Guys!
I hear ya...I've had this drawer collecting dust for over a year now, couple weeks ago I was working on restoring/fixing up a Troy Bilt pony and said to myself I need place to work. I really dont have time for this, but I'm needing to MAKE time! LOL. I'm just glad the end is near...hopefully final fit the drawer tonight one last time...weld everything up and then tomorrow I'll have a hot date with my DA and some 36 Grit.

Even thinking of going so far as to using body filler to smooth things out perfectly...thats still in debate tho.

This is awesome!! U sir have an awesome bench. I now want to turn my welding table/work bench into something like this with a drawer.

How does one just come up with an extra wide drawer laying around? Or did u actually pony up and for out the cash for this. I could imagine that drawer alone being $500 plus dollars

Thanks 90zcar. I cant claim too much "credit" for this design...I'm basically copying the SnapOn "KRL" styled one they had a few years ago.

How does a guy get drawers? Good relationship with your SO/MAC guy. This one was a brand new one which arrived with a teeny-tiny dent on the front face of the drawer, honestly If I wouldnt tell you about it and you didnt know what to look for you probably wouldnt find it on your own. So it was swapped out and the driver was left with a drawer to dispose of. I honestly have more money $$ invested in the 2x sets of slides for it then the drawer itself.

Next order of business is figuring out what kind of top I want on it...

Snap on guy ordered the wrong drawers for someone, I put 3 thin black drawers in my KRA4860 to replace these 2. So he gave me a great price. Ask around and see what surplus drawers your driver has. I've even seen drawers for sale on craigslist/kijiji.

I found that prospect of a project interesting too; IIRC, the drawers for them were also used in well-produced KRL boxes and $300 a pop. Nice design you've started there.

Yup, says right in the literature it uses 722 slides, etc...

Top is off an EPIQ...bolted together construction throws me though.

Finding drawers isn't quite as hard as one may think it is...ASSUMING you got a relationship with a driver...I know I've got a couple more up in the Attic (Royal Blue)...I coulda gotten quite a few out of a new Macsimizer...

The single hardest challenge though is designing everything around a fixed drawer...I am not finding this project technically challenging, but very tedious when your trying to get everything to fit together perfectly. Spent the night working on my drawer retention..will test tomorrow when my wife can help me slide the drawer back in.

Wow that's sick!!
Because of this thread I recently asked my snap on rep if he had any extra drawers and he said he only ever had to order one extra drawer in his entire life of being a rep.

Guess that shoots my dreams down of doing this!!

Very nice!!

Dont Dispair, put the feelers out and see what happens...This is one of those things that you'll look FOREVER for...when your not looking, they fall into your lap. I've seen some listed here, some on Craigslist, etc.. Talk to your MAC & Matco guys too...I've got mental plans in my head on how I'd build a Macsimizer version...just need the drawer :D

I did however think that when u said u were gonna put body filler on it u were gonna grind the top corner weld down where the upright bar meets the crossbeam and smooth that out seamless.
Looks great tho man. And I think I put enough time/talk in that if he does come across one he will remember me saying that.
I built my workbench/welding table a year ago and didn't have the thought til I seen ur thread. Unfortunately I couldn't put one of the 53" wide drawers in. It's 2" shy of being able to.
I'd have to go the next step down which is a 32" drawer and put little filler pueces in on the side

When I put filler I meant on the crossbeams, they were stamped with MFG & Weight Ratings, so I wanted that filled, plus where the stamping was created a small low spot.
I certianly would have filled in the seam your talking about, BUT the legs are 3" and the cross beam is something like 2-3/4 2-13/16 and I put it flush on the inside to make mounting the drawer easier. Figured It would give it a little "Detail"

1/2" plate :rocker:

Got my dad working on sourcing a 3/4" Plate like he has...I've got access to a free 5/8" Plate which is long enough but is only 30" deep, I need a little over 36"
In the meantime, I've decided I'll just build a 3" Thick wood top for now..no big deal to pop it off and replace once I find the right plate.

You could just bend up some 1/8" sheet over the wood. Would be plenty strong and lighter than 1/2", 3/4" OR 5/8" plate. That is what snappy does with theirs. Not sure if theirs is 1/8" though. either that or a little thinner.

If anything, weight on a bench is good...bench is tipping the scales at +/- 400lbs right now as it sits I'd like more. The Snappy is much thinner then 10 Gauge 1/8"...with a MDF Core. I'd like more Heavy duty then that.

Pricing NEW things around, they are all coming in at right around the same prices, Brazillan Hardwood Top, 1/4" Steel Top, etc..I'm really not wanting to spend any more money on this project at the moment...

Well, the stars & moon aligned...I was able to score a new 3/4" Steel Plate for the top...Should be rugged enough I think... :D

Wow over kill wow. Epic draw and awsome top. Lol

Thanks! Yeah, it is a little over the top, but its been really affordable thus far. I've got less into this project then what one of them 5 drawer tool carts cost.

Overkill is also in the eye of the beholder, My Dad, 3 different uncles and most people I know all use 3/4" Plate for tops of benches. I "grew up" using a bench which had a 3/4" top, all along I wanted one, just couldn't find one till this weekend. Double bonus really, I've got a 1/2" sheet coming today we worked out a deal on...so I could build a "lighter duty" bench sometime in the future with the sheet of 1/2"

Perfect!

You will not put any dents in that bad boy!!

I hope not...LOL...if I do, I also just got a sheet of 1/2" yesterday which I could always lay on top of this 3/4" to cover up the dents... :lol_hitti

One of the nicest things will be mounting my vise...just drill & tap the sheet, no nuts needed.
