Get: you are awesome or were you calling Joe's seller and got better information. either way nice call.

Joe: if you have a pallet handy you can start by putting that one on it and throw a tarp over it until he has a few more friends to join him on a trip to the my house since you are a swiveler and don't like this style vise.:)

Made a little progress on the vise before I had to pick up the kids today. The logo cleaned up well with the Simple Green. My question is the nut that holds the threaded handle in place broken? Or is that the way they are supposed to be. Next Question is it possible this thing was a factory yellow/gold? When cleaning up the metal I see what looks like John Deere yellow primer under the red paint. Thanks guys

Hey all,

First of all, I wanted to say congrats to Oldie for finding a 5198, it's a shame that you were unable to get it! I've shipped vises weighing 170+ lbs via Fastenal and the most I've paid is $108 and that was from NM to MI for my Wilton 600S! Though I'm not sure what your budget is for a vise. Anyways, as Andy already mentioned, I was able to have some time off from work so I drove over and picked up the Parker 436, all 187 lbs of her! This is the only picture I have at the moment seeing as it's still in my back seat.

I do have a question for anyone that has a Wilton 09-600, what size are the swivel lock downs? I'm trying to finish my order with KMScott but I'm at work so I can't check at the moment. I swear they are 5/8 but he also has 3/4, anyone have definitive answer?

Finished these three Columbians up today, just noticed I have three more. I am going to work on something else. These were good practice.

Andrew, I have found that they use both 3/4:10 and 5/8:11 and to top that the heights are all different, seems they just threw what ever they wanted on. I keep making the wrong sizes, wrong heights.

Reed casts those nuts and then splits them in two so it's supposed to be that way. There'd be no way to put them on the screw if they weren't in two pieces.

Looking good so far!

Those look amazing Kevin! What color did you use on the smaller two Columbians? I really like it.

Edit: Is that the Satin Italian Olive??

Balane, yes it is the Satin Italian Olive, You hooked me on that color. I will use it again. I am just trying to get used to rattle can painting, really comes out thin. I painted the light green on the 205 with my spray gun, I had the mixer copy the original color. I am not to crazy about that color.

That's not a crack its a damned fault! But the swivel, collar, spindle etc.. will work on one of my vises, the 23x, 825, 974 1/2 etc...and I'm sure many other Parker models, so I figured why not grab it as a parts vise. He wouldn't come off of $80 2 months ago but at $50, for a Parker that size, I'm stupid not to pull the trigger.

Does this make sense?

THanks Balane. I was thinking that there would be no way of getting it together but when I saw that it was not made in 2 pieces it confused me. Glad I asked and didn't break out the welder

LOL, I would have loved to see that...

It's made as one piece because it's threaded... then cracked in half so it will fit between the ends on the handle to hold it in.

Making two perfect half-circles + threads that would line up would require some serious CNC work.

Man, I wish I had a fraction of your free time. ;) Life must be good getting to spend all day fixing up old vises. Any internships open at your shop? LOL

Fine job(s) Senor Scott! It took me a bit to realize you had both fixed and swiveling versions there! Brother and sister twins!

Makes perfect sense. I've never seen one cracked there before.

I was on another thread on Gj and opened the link, low and behold Lowes has a picture selling a new item with a small vintage vise in the pic. Not sure it would be my first choice to hold a gold ring like that but it's a cool vise.

Can anybody identify the vise?

This is my 50mm Leinen, and the difference is mine is attached to a rotating base. (The blue is an old Polish vise.)

Oh, it was abused all right, like the prom queen at a fraternity party...

Actually, Mr Scott and and my blacksmith both pointed out that on some Parkers there can be a seam that occurs when they pour the steel for these bigger vises because the steel cools so quickly that it doesnt flow well causing a seam line. Normally not a problem but when some idiot uses the tail of the dynamic jaw as an anvil it will crack along this seam. When this crack occurs the the tail of the dynamic jaw will spread, in my case by 1/16th, and the vise will not open all the way.

I have this problem on my 825 but I am getting it repaired as we speak.

If there's a weakness or a stress point in the cast, it doesn't need to be abused for the flaw to show itself. The slightest of things could have set off the crack.

Personally, with that vice with the crack in the rear of the body, I'd be tempted to cramp that up and plate it across the back edge. Looks like there's plenty of meat there for drilling and tapping. Can't see that causing any problems then, provided you drill the other end of the crack to stop it continuing. It'll give it a bit of additional character too. :D

Just got done making my first vise handle. I don't have a lathe or welder so I did the best I could I think it came out ok but it's certainly not pretty its 1/2 dia and 9in long. The handle is on a 3in Massey vise about 20 pounds

That handle looks good to me. :)

Well impressed to see someone showing a work bench which is well used and beaten too. I was beginning to think that was almost like a Unicorn on here. :D

You must have missed the post where I mentioned that someone had welded on one of the towers! :dunno:

I'll put up a pic when i get the vise Friday. I've seen this vise in person. it is very ugly.

The ugly ducking became a swan. :D A vice with prettiness issues should be no problem. When you say welded, do you mean a crack has been welded or just that they've been either using the vice to strike the arc or that it has spatter?

Let me be clear. Some idiot broke one of the towers clean off of the vise. Again...the tower...was...broken...clean...off!!!! Another idiot thought it would be a good idea to weld it back on. That's what I've got here, an idiots vise and now I'm the idiot buying it.

Joe: don't be so hard on yourself. kudos to you for saving the parts of the idiot's vise to fix another idiot's vise down the road or one you already own.

Rusty: nice handle. if you would like to share the process you did to make that handle over on the Vise Repair 101 thread i'm sure a lot us that don't have a mill or all the correct tools to make one like Ritzblitz or KMScott would like to know how you did that one.

Nope, still a bit fuzzy on what you mean...

We'll have to await your photo's to decide whether to concur with you or not on the idiot tag.

Agreed, it's a beautiful vise! I was very lucky to get it, they originally wanted double what I paid for it, in fact had I not bought it they were going to take it to the scrap yard. She certainly is an all original beauty!

P.S. I spy a possibility of a Reed 407 in my very near future ;)

High at BIN of $ 600.00...

But the pipe jaws are there, and the jaws don't look too bad...:willy_nil

It's in Connecticut, so shipping wouldn't be too bad...

I saw that, I'm currently more interested in the Reed 407 that's within driving distance to me. I've already contacted the seller with a cash offer! ;)

It is LH & F Littlestown Hardware & Foundry Co. It must be an older one ? because most of them you see say Littco / Littlestown PA. They are homeowner marginal light duty vises. They are very very common. I would look for something a little more substanial. My nephew gave me one over the weekend and I had to say "Thanks" but I couldn't tell him this is a worn out broken "POS"

Thanks for the info. I don't plan on using it. I bought it for display.

I've got a Dayton 8" and a 4 1/2" Wilton I use on a daily basis.
