This weekend did not have any sales planned but since my girlfriend sleeps late, I was able to go with my dad, we were visiting him, and hit a few sales.

Needless to say, my first stop was a bit of a home run:beer:

Craftsman 109 metal lathe, measuring just a few inches over 2 feet. Back gears, motor and some tooling were all included. 75.00:shocking:

That was the only thing I bought that day. The rest are in the next post

These 2 guys were the other good finds of my day.

The Desmond was still mounted to a bench after a whole day of an estate sale. 15.00

The Wilton power arm was at a crappy garage sale with a crazy shop just out of reach. The old timer had a huge mill, lathe and just about every other metalworking tool known strewn about the garage.

I asked if he had any vises for sale and he said no. Then I noticed the power arm mount with 2 steel plates bolted to it. I asked if it was for sale and he said, sure, I've never used it in 30 years. How does 10.00 sound:bounce:

I tried to stay away from any sales this weekend due to a lack of discretionary funds but Craigslist would not leave me be:)

Somebody had a box of Plomb stuff he was previewing before his garage sale next week.

Nice collection. My late father-in-law had a few Plomb tools, and I've started looking for them at garage sales & flea markets. They never look as good as the group you bought there.

And yes, you ****, if I may bestow that title upon you. ;)

:+1: on the suckage, all you missed on the ratchets was the 3/4 drive! You even got the 1" breaker!

Are the screwdrivers also Plvmb?

Outlaw, The drivers are a mixture of Plvmb & Proto. I have some that are badged P&C as well from the ****** years. The breaker and big ratchet are actually 3/4 although I agree that it's a big jump in size from 1/2" to 3/4"

Now if I could just find someone to re-broach all my wrenches and sockets to metric sizes…...

The wedges fit into the socket to grip different sizes of bolts/studs

Btw, you ****. I live miles from the Plomb factory and never find them in that quantity.

Thanks BC. I found this pic of the similar 4515.

The seller thought that the long bar (above the breaker bar in my first photo) was part of the stud remover. It has a knurled handle and a ball detent and does seem to fit in the round holes of the remover. However, It looks like the wedges go in the side hole and I assume the stud to be removed goes in the round end. I guess that leaves no place for the long bar to go since the other end of the tool has a hex drive….

That bar above the breaker bar is probably the bar that goes into the hole of the breaker bar. It was typical to do this so the breaker bar can be used as a T drive.

Rusty: it was probably the 30's early 40's version of an easy out on a broken or rounded off bolt or nut. Madison nice call on the piece to make it work. again nice stuff and looks like i'll have to bring my Plvmb one inch ratchet to show you when i stop by to see your 8 inch Parker vise.

Amazingly the seller actually listed these as "Plomb tools" in the tool section. You're right though. It's pretty unusual to find more than a couple of pieces at once. You're still welcome to come over and dig through my "surplus" tools whenever you want.;)

What are the double ended extensions used for? See them all the time at flea but don't know what they do.

thats the main reason i grabbed this box.
i suppose other brands did it also. i have an old plVmb 1/2" ratchet that doesnt have a square "drive" it has a square hole. it needs a double squared extension to work w/ a socket.

Bigcaddy, $10 Pow-R-Arm = a big You ****! in my book.

Last one I saw in person was the 301 style. A dealer wanted something like $100 for it.

Wow guys, mega hauls of Plomb, Craftsman, even Walden!

Well A couple of my wrenches got a little messed up :( where the chrome was gone or damaged already, the vinegar ate at it and messed up a little chrome on a few wrenches. But on the bright side they do look better, I would suggest vinegar for this for sure! But don't go longer than 24hr so that if damage is done you can see it and stop it sooner. Ill post pics up tomorrow! Got them sprayed with wd40 to neutralize vinegar (I hope, lol) and wipe em off and show you!

That is why I use Vinegar VERY selectively. and not for chrome. for chrome, Molasses, Evaporust would be good (chelation processes both), for surface rust on chrome; SOS (Not rillo) pads (wet) or 0000 Steel wool and oil.

I'll use Vinegar on files, un-plated drills, taps and dies, and the like.

But my overall fave for plain rust on un-plated steel is the E-tank.

From my experiments with cleaning rusty metal, there is a method for every finish.

I've had great results using evaporust on chrome plated items but have also been using fine steel wool 0000 and turtle wax for years while cleaning up rusty bike parts.

For the really rusy and cruddy items, I use an electrolysis tank and forget it for a few days. This removes the bulk of rust and the balance can be taken off with brushes or grinder with a wire wheel attachment.

I've also experimented with acid diluted in water to gently removed rust and still leave a patina intact

I was working on a clean Wilton bullet vise, paint, decals and plating was all original, and I didn't want to disturb it in any way. The lockdowns had years of wear that resulted in a smooth, brown color that was anything but rust. Unfortunately it was left outside and rust attacked it. After abut 30 minutes in the acid dip, the rust was gone and the original patina remained.

Take some time on weekends with some real basket case tools to see what results you get, and more importantly, what you like:beer:

Hub widget? It came with the big nut that holds the wheel on to the machine, and a press down bar and the dismount bar. Rich
Now I need to find a bubble balancer...lol.
So what is a hub widget?

My $5 find. A tool of a different kind, I suppose :) I've never heard of John Hassall Inc before, but the sign was in good shape considering age. The copyright on the bottom is dated 1942.

Apparently John Hassall Inc is still in business...

Very cool, I'm on the lookout for one of those too!

I hit the mother load last weekend. Will take several days to even figure out what I bought.

Basically, as many tools as I could fit into a mini-van (no seats) for $200

Here is a SMALL sample
MotherLoad-1.jpg

(every drawer and space of these cabs were STUFFED full of tools... I have since pulled em out)
MotherLoad-2.jpg

Probably another 8 boxes and buckets full of sockets, wrenches, etc etc etc....
