WWN: i agree it's at least an 8 inch and most likely a 9 incher. i really hate to see it lifted by the chain like that so go save it. also take a steel ball or a ball peen hammer and listen for the ring of the anvil and if you have the ball see if it rebounds nicely. not any cracks welds or other issues and it's a no brainer and serious "yes" if it's not already gone.

hopefully one of the lurkers didn't see your craigs link before you contacted the seller saying you are coming over to buy it.

good luck

Sandman: please post your Prentiss 58 because it's on my short list of the ones to pass on to my grandkids.

KMScott: can you post your websites you are selling your Columbians and other vises on or are they going to an Ebay store? nice work on all of them and pretty nice paint jobs for a self confessed Rookie. where's the stump for all those in the back room?

Looks like a Prentiss, and by counting blurs in the picture it would seem like 8" or *maybe* 9"... Seriously for that and the anvil for $500... WHY ARE YOU NOT THERE ALREADY?!?!?!?!

If you are willing to ship you could at minimum quadruple your money on that.

This one is not for me boys. I would love an 8" vise but now is not a good time for me to outlay the cash or time. I'll get one eventually. I am patient.

I posted so another member can grab it and post lots of pics.

That doesn't sound right. The Columbian version of the Prentiss 58 has "cat 108" on it and that one looks like the Columbian/Prentiss. Either way, somebody is having a good night.

I started looking through pictures, and it does seem to have more in common with this Columbian than a Prentiss...

Wrench: did you buy the big un because craigslist ad is now marked "sold" for anvil and vise for $500?

Jason: thanks for Kevin's web site address.

B100: did Columbian vises have a rounded off Hub on the main screw? it looks like there is a screw hole for maybe a Parker like screw holder, but it doesn't look like a Parker either.

ALL: Va or others that have more information please post about this chained beast.

What do you think : Prentiss,Rock Island? 8" or 9"?

It's a good deal whatever it is assuming it's not broken.

I was salivating over this post as well. I have a few family members who worked at the Navy Yard (many, many moons ago) and probably used them at one time or another.

***edit*** Looks like the vise and anvil are gone. Anyone here get them?

Drivesit.---I'm not at all versed on large stationaries, and I sure wouldn't second guess B100 who has owned some and has the shinny on the rest of them.---Besides I'm one of those swiveling ba's.---So even being a monster, just doesn't quite have the appeal to me that it does to some.---That said, I see it is already sold, so whoever got it, got the vise for free, (if you've been keeping up with E-bay prices on 250 and 300 lb. anvils).

The one's I've seen were all cylinder shaped, so this could have been replaced sometime in its life or maybe it just came that way:dunno:. Hopefully the new owner is on here and will post up more pics when his back feels better.

VA: Happy to hear you are a swivel only guy because that just means i have a better shot at the Reed 109 and a few other great old vises. of course there are others like me that just don't care and will build a stand if we need more access to those monsters.

just curious and thought i'd ask the man with all the chains on his vises. would you ever lift a vise that big with chains in the jaws? just doesn't seem right to me. so far i haven't bought a vise i can't lift, but i'm not getting any younger. wouldn't you put a couple straps on it or i'm guessing you own a fork lift so maybe a pallet is involved?

CoPilot: glad to help you answer your Patent question and anytime you need more feel free to ask. :bounce:

This is how I usually lift heavy vises, you open them up some then you can slide the forks under each side.

When I had to move my 4C that was all seized up I had to get creative to get it in & out of the e-tank. I wrapped a chain around the front nose, and another chain around the back of the slide.

I do vaguely remember having to move a large vise by closing the jaws and lifting that way, but I used a lifting strap for that, not chains.

Hi Friends,

I thought I'd put out this CL Alert...On the Bowling Green, Ky CL there is a listing for a 6" Columbian swivel base vise for $100.00 (sorry, I don't know how to attach the link). It has an aerosol overhaul but otherwise, it looks worth the price. I don't have time to travel to look at it but I hope one of you guys can ****** it up.

I didn't see the Columbian, but there's a Prentiss with snivel jaw that looks it could be a 6".

Also saw further down a new in box CT-102, 10"! He has a link (below) to the Taiwan company that makes them. The website states "We are Vise Specialists". The forged steel and 10 year warranty ones may not be half bad depending on what they sell for. They could be the OEM for the Yost, Bessey and others.

Drivesit, I have never offloaded a vise that way.---First off, even if nothing goes wrong, that 200 to 300 lbs. pulling on the chain could mar and scar the good crease on the dynamic.---But one bad jerk and there goes a chunk of the jaw support or a mounting ear or a chunk off the slide.---I'm with EOC, it should be a two point lift if it's not on a pallet.---If it's forks, contact should be flat to flat, if it's not forks, it should be a two point belt harness.---(Ounce of prevention).---One could also just take it apart so there are manageable pieces.--- But I have to tell you, all my vises that I couldn't carry into the shop were offloaded on a slide, (even the 325 lb. Holland).---They were gently eased down a 14 ft. section of portable aircraft runway.---I'm talking new born baby gentle.---I don't like to see grown men cry especially when it is so easily prevented.---If I dropped and broke the base off my 208, do you think I wouldn't cry.---Think again.

Looks like a Prentiss #5.
6" jaws on that big fella.

http://evansville.craigslist.org/tls/4654005306.html

My heart skipped a beat when I saw that one. I believe that it's a good retail price, as long as it's not broken. Seeing some separation between the pivot jaw and the body makes me think that the jaw may not be frozen or at least not a bear to get apart. If it had a swivel base, it would be in my shop.

OK Guys,

Here's a challenge that I had to overcome:
While at a big box home improvement store shopping for hardware, an older gentleman crossed in front of me and excused himself. We chatted for a few minuets. I noticed in his cart that he had a Chi-Com vise. :scared: My challenge was to keep from saying to him "DUDE...WHAT THE >F< ARE YOU THINKING BY BUYING THAT PIECE OF >S< ?!?!" :wtf:
Yes, I'm a vise snob, but I kept my mouth shut and told him to have a good weekend. :)

Has anyone had that feeling?

As promised, here is a picture of the 5198 after being broken down and further undressed before getting cleaned up like new.

I've got one picture for now but that's due to this thing being an absolute pain to get apart. It fought me at every thread but I finally won out and here it is

The jaw pads are soaking in degreaser as are the internals.

Next on the list is to fill the hole that was drilled into the "anvil" area on the vise. I think the old timer had a hardy insert and used it often. There is a circular area of wear around the circumference of the hole, most likely from being struck down upon:mad:

Here is another entry from the craftsman branded line of vises. I'm not sure who made this one but they have a neat look unlike any other vise out there

Craftsman 5169 with 4" jaws. I have a model 5170 with raised lettering but it's a 3.5" jaw width which I thought was strange. You would think the size would become larger with an increased model number
