OK Guys,

Here's a challenge that I had to overcome:
While at a big box home improvement store shopping for hardware, an older gentleman crossed in front of me and excused himself. We chatted for a few minuets. I noticed in his cart that he had a Chi-Com vise. :scared: My challenge was to keep from saying to him "DUDE...WHAT THE >F< ARE YOU THINKING BY BUYING THAT PIECE OF >S< ?!?!" :wtf:
Yes, I'm a vise snob, but I kept my mouth shut and told him to have a good weekend. :)

Has anyone had that feeling?

Yes when in Sears and the lady customer was like "Oh if it's Craftsman its the premium stuff right"

Didn't hear what the salesman said but I felt like saying something LOL.

Woah woah woah now, a 5198 was found?! So this is what happens when work pulls me away from Garagejournal for all of August? Wow, I had to go back and read up to get the scoop. Talk about finding hen's teeth.

Don't worry Old, I've got your "Oldldh Craftsman 5198 vise" in my notes on my phone so I don't forget the model number when I'm out vise hunting. You'll get one sooner or later with the collective of GJ keeping their eyes on the lookout for you.

Don't get me started on Sears. I took my broken USA made c-clamp in for a new one. All that was wrong was the spindle foot was broken. When I saw that the identical replacement was made in China, I took mine home and machined my own spindle foot.
In summary, you might as well go to HF. At least their Chi-Com tools are cheaper.

One must check on a regular basis...

Big has got it, and he's going to do a "Magnifique Restoration" on it...

I don't feel bad...

There's another one out there...

Thanks for the good thoughts...

Manual? You have an encyclopedia with this thread, don't need a manual :D

There are plenty of Wilton experts on this thread, you will get lots of info

It's a Wilton 1645 medium duty/mechanics vise.

The 11xxxx numbers are production part numbers and all of their vises have them in one form or another

No directions are needed but go as follows:

Place item between jaws
Clamp until tight
If item moves, keep tightening until it squeals. :D

Who can tell me what vice is this? I am sure if I go through all the pages I would be able to spot a similar one, but I do not have the time.

It is a blacksmith type leg vise or post vise.
Looks to have the leg cut off and mounted closer to the ground.

Actually, if you went through all of the pages, you might not see it, there are all kinds of vises on this thread, but primarily bench vises. There are some experts on the leg or blacksmith vises, Outlawmns being one of them, I am sure he and others will chime in....if they aren't too busy :lol_hitti

From what I have heard from those in the know, there are some well known brands, but a majority of these leg vises were actually made by the blacksmith themselves, so yours could be one of the many one of a kinds.

I have one similar, I haven't done anything with it but there were no markings that I saw initially...

You can find them at: http://benchvisejaws.com/ Along with all your other bench vise accessory needs... :rocker:

I was looking at the vises on Kevin's website, really nice and great prices! Compared to what some are selling on eBay for restored vises, and what you can get for new made in the USA vise today, these have been nicely restored, with beautiful new jaws and other parts.

With his workmanship, the buyer is getting as good as new (or better) quality

Jason, Did you wear out the toe on your boot from kicking all those vises out of the way ?
FMC, I agree with you on Kevin's work, always excellent !

I got lazy after working on that big Parker combo vise. I found one E Bay
that I think is a unique little Stanley Jersey vise. It is a bottom mount swivel #672.

BC: Squeal? :dunno: I'm thinking with all these red vises you are painting that you might want to buy some of those red finger savers speaking of squealing. or blue ones??

Here is my little (80 mm) Peddinghaus picked up for $40 at a swapmeet last weekend.
Almost unused, but quite mistreated far as surfaces were concerned.
A bucket of hot water with 5% caustic soda, wirebrushing and then paint with a brake caliper paint that matched the original color quite well.
The alu soft jaws are homemade.

Zero backlash, smooooth and jaws are perectly //.
Happy as a clam.

This Yost 204 is my latest acquisition and only needed some cleaning and de-rusting.

Now if I could just learn how to post the pictures in the message box in the larger size as some others do....

Someone had posted a step by step how to post pic, with diagrams for each step, can't remember who. The real short version, save the pics somewhere on your PC, example, on your desktop. When writing your reply, click on the paper clip located a couple of icons to the right of fonts & sizes. You will have spaces to upload 7 pics. You will either see a "browse or "choose file" depending if you use Chrome or IE. Click on it and navigate to the saved pics on you desktop and upload, then wait for the upload to finish. This can take seconds to many minutes depending on your connection & also because it will reduce very large files to the Max size stated.

When it is complete, close that window and you are done. If someone finds that other post with the how to diagrams, that would make it easier, but if you follow what I wrote, you should be OK

That is a pair of old stamped metal table legs I was going to do something with ??? The old board had a small Parker #32 vise mounted on it. I haven't got a stump so I have to make do with what I can come up with.
Thanks for the nice comment

Nice looking vise, andrew.

It's the perfect homeowner vise for when you have clamp in a length of 6" pipe and cut some threads by hand:lol:

That is one vise I have yet to own, in any size, brand or model. I once missed a chance to buy a Morgan combo with 6" jaws but they were asking 500.00, reduced from 800.00:eyecrazy:

Needless to say, I passed. I've always admired their "hunchback" qualities and someday I will own one

kattoter,---The brand on most post/leg/blacksmith vises is usually on the top of the mounting plate.---If you can dust off the mounting plate, you might see the company's name who made it, if it was company made.---And yours looks to have been altered to accommodate the concrete post.---Columbian and Iron City seem to be the most common foundry made post vises.---Some other examples are,---Peter Wright
Fisher Norris
Indian Chief
Keenkutter
D. C. *******

Demoman has the largest post vises I have ever seen.---Go to page 495 and you will see his 8'', 283 lb. D. C. Cummings with an additional foot wheel adjustment.---Now that's a post vise!--And also he has an 8'', 203 lb., Iron City.

Buddy had picked up an old Yankee / Stanley 3993 dril press vise with stand for under $15 - the vise is pretty beat with lots of abuse (drilled holes), but the stand is in great shape overall. It was pretty rusty and jammed up. I cleaned it up for him today - cleaned, lubed, oiled and original patina intact. I love the label:

I don't think I have ever seen a drill press vise as abused as that one. Man, that old girl has been ridden hard.

You might be able to get better use out of the vise by installing some removable jaws plates, at least you'll have flat clean surfaces to clamp onto.
The base is cool and easily worth the $15 bucks alone.

Couldn't agree more. It is missing any sort of jaw plates, but I'm sure my buddy could find some for it. Ironically, I have a mint 993 (doesn't have the holes to fit to the base) with mint jaw plates on it...maybe we could share :)

Andrew, I noticed in some earlier pictures of the 436 it looked like what appeared to be a C clip with a washer holding the base on the center stud.
Is that right or am I seeing things ? I have noticed also the pipe jaws have the small size on top and the larger size on the bottom. Looking at some other pictures of Parkers I have seen the large on top and small on the bottom. I wonder if the jaws will flip over and fit either way ? I am just comparing differences in my older version (289 1/2) of your 436

Finished up my Reed no 32 last night and I think everyone will like this color choice better then the pink vise i posted. I believe the vise is 108 years old or older because it doesn't have any patent dates especially the 1908 one.

You are correct, and that's because it's actually a 436A, with all the differences I'm guessing it's probably made after Union bought the company but before they totally flipped the design as it's kind of a half way between the old and new. The jaw pads are not set at an angle, they're machined at 90 degrees and sit flat against the jaws. It also didn't come with a wrench to adjust the swivel bolt. There's other minor differences, but overall it's still one big girl! :lol_hitti

Edited to add: Sure the pipe jaws could flip over, but they're exactly as it came from the factory which is fine with me, as the way they are held in hasn't been disturbed at all. Once again, I'm guessing part of the whole 'A' revision.
