donmillerx, It is a Polish vise, Bison-Bial. It probably has a rear moving jaw ? and that is a design used by several european companies.

I couldn't get the picture from Photobucket earlier

Is that a 5gal bucket below that vise? :shocking:

My full focus is on the Emmert vise and my joy in restoring that one is...well it is making me giddy! My wife said that I love the Emmert more than I love her. I said it is an affair and that it will end and come back to her. By the way, the day I got the Emmert my wife of 31 years had come home an hour early to 'surprise' me, if you get my drift. I gotta tell you she wasn't very happy when I told her we had to go pick up a vise...And you guys don't judge me, I've had a vise sold out from under me more than once.:bitchslap

Good to see you've got your priorities right. Nookies you can get anytime, but a good deal on a vice or an uncommon vice is a lot more important.

FMC you wont believe it but the York is GONE. One of the guys who bought a few of my vises heard about it and wants to restore it. It is in really excellent condition...so it found a new home. He already had the 75mm York and was rabid for this one plus he offered $175 + shipping. I made him VERY happy and now I can make KM Scott happy by spending oodles of cash at his shop!

Good for you on the quick turnaround

For a pressed steel slide vise they are pretty solid. I'd put them on par with the older craftsman pressed steel slide vises. The later production went to china, even those were pretty stout for their size. I redid a china one a while back. Now granted I wouldn't shell out much cash for one, especially if it was in rough condition. BTW, 135 should be 3.5" jaws. Wish I had a before pic handy. :headscrat:

Picked up a Wilton Cadet just a few minutes ago. Are these supposed to have a cap on the back? It has smooth jaws. I'm always looking for the big Wiltons and along comes this one...

If it had a cap like it should have it would have been $20.

What have I got? It's a vise with "61/2 inch jaws" casted on the side plus "made in USA." It has the number 1765, has a bullet nose, with access through the nose (screw on plate).

It has pipe jaws beneath the regular jaws--it's very heavy. It's missing one of the pipe jaw plate teeth- jaws are held on each by a single screw. There is no company name though it appears to be good heavy duty vise, but a bit dirty from use.

I want to replace the one pipe jaw and go through the vise to clean it up-so need to know the maker?

Thank you, Vetactor

Found this at a garage sale this morning. Obviously a well used vise but it works well. 3 1/2" Prentiss Bulldog. I'm only going to clean up the hardware on this one and leave the cast iron alone.

Balane, I just picked up a Prentiss No. 19 which has 3 1/2 jaws and, like yours, has a chip in the corner. Are you planning on repairing yours? This is my first Prentiss and I'm wondering what my options are.

All, No pictures of mine yet, but I'll get them posted soon. :)

I'll look into the cost of replacement jaws but I doubt I'll put new ones in to be honest. The actual jaw faces are decent on this one, only the top and bottom portions are broken.

What Wilton is This?

I just acquired this 4" Wilton. It does say made in Schiller Park, Illinois and has a couple of numbers on it. (See pic). It looks like a Mechanics Vise, but has no anvil. Seems to be a little green paint left. I will rehab it, and have ordered new jaws from Wilton.
Hah! New jaw inserts are installed and the vise has been painted with Rust Bullet!

MF'er, Dunlap was sold by Sears as an economy line compared to Craftsman from 1941 through 1959 with a few things rolling through 63/64

So its at least 50 years old, probably more. It looks identical to the Dunlap in the 1960 catalog, and the model No. matches - 1577. The 506 prefix makes it made for Sears by Columbian.

I dug these 2 Parkers out today from the depths of my garage. Both nice! One is a Parker 259X and the other is a dirty pristine 434 1/2

I need input from this august body as regards the Emmert i'm restoring for resale.

Mr Scott is making me a handle and new swivel clamp (YAY), I've resolved all the mechanical coditions and have it working like new. The burning question is WHAT COLOR?
I do not want to use boiled linseed oil, thats out. I assume the original color was black. I've toyed with using my Hammerite blue, a color i love, but I worry about originality.

So if you were an Emmert collector and you were spending 600-800 large, what would you want to see for a color on this thing? BTW, my wife saysvto go with the Rustoleum Spruce green satin.

thank you all in advance.

How old is it, approximately? The suggestion your wife made would be a good neutral choice, akin to the military colours which someone keeps using, (can't remember whether it's Balane or Jason?). The oil is also a good neutral choice. Depends what type of buyer you're aiming for. You have to remember that colour is subjective and personal.

Nice Parkers Nick, especially the 434-1/2. They keep coming out of the woodwork. Are you going to repaint the 434-1/2?

Joe we all can not wait to see your Emmert finished, hope I am not holding you up.

Never owned a pipe vise, seen lots of pictures but the ones I've seen in person were always half the size of this one. Maybe there are many this big or even bigger, $15 at a flea market so I got it.

Put a soda can and a Parker 974 for reference.

I would go with something lighter than black, as intricate as that vise is you would lose the visuals in black. Maybe a nice industrial gray.

I went to day to a farm auction outside River John in Nova Scotia. There I expected to find a Record No. 100 4" vise, which I picked up for $15.
What I did not expect to see was an 8" Columbian blacksmith's vise. Here'a a couple photos for posterity -

it went for $75....

At $75 that was a great deal for an 8" post vise. For that price, around here, you'd be lucky to purchase a 3" post vise.
