DO you have good drainage, I could never build something directly on the slab here.,.. Had to but 2 rows of blocks...

Yes we do have good drainage, lots of gravel in the ground, and no clay. I also put down drainage tile that I will tap the gutters into on both sides. On the left side of the shop the drain tile runs from our house downspout past the shop where it ties in and right out the back fence into the ditch. The back side will have the drain tile out to the ditch as well. After seeing what happened to gentle_bens garage I was sure to get the drainage right. That would **** !

The firebird is mine and the mustang belongs to a long time friend. We have had these cars since the mid 80's and never had a picture taken of the cars together. So this summer, 25+ years later, this picture was taken. One of us was always working on something and they were never both on the road at the same time. :bounce:

But there was always a friendly rivalry about who's car would be finished first. I won in 2000 :) but was then parked until 2012. :(

I think his was finished in 2010.

I should never say "finished" as they are always ongoing projects !!

Great pic of the cars. Really like the blue on yours. Reminds me of my '63 Buick Skylark I drove in high school. Thanks for sharing; very interesting.

Thanks, What happened to your Skylark?

The color of my car is actually a chameleon type. Its called Ocean Extreme. Its an BASF/RM paint. I painted it back in 2000 but now want to go to an age specific color for it. When my shop is done it will be one of the first projects.

Not much has happened with the garage, still waiting for trusses and have been busy with work. I did decide on 2 windows for sure, so with the help of my very supportive wife :D we cut the sheathing out.

Sadie always seems to be photo-bombing  I think I have more pictures of her than of my kids

Still waiting on my trusses, hopefully by the weekend. They told me by the 17th but are now a couple days behind. :( If not by the weekend maybe I will get the power hooked up.

I traded the Skylark in when I got my Malibu. If I knew then what I know about cars, engine and drivetrain swaps I would have kept the Skylark. Last time I saw it the right 1/4 panel was caved in; I almost cried as it was the first car I restored. When I rebuilt the 215 CID I polished the entire engine in metal shop: heads, intake and block( all aluminum). The car probably had 200# of cast chrome trim on it. Amazingly, it came with the same casting number Carter AFB as my Dad's 401 LeSabre!

That Chameleon paint was quite the thing. Didn't they eventually come out with one that had 8 different colors, and a price to match?

Are you planning a dedicated paint booth in the new garage?

I am planning to do some painting in the shop but not going to make a permanent paint bay. I'm kind of thinking about putting in a permanent ventilation system but will have a temporary booth set up that I can take down when not spraying. something like a Costco car cover frame that I would wrap with clear plastic to allow the light in and keep the overspray off everything else.

To bad about the skylark. Sounds like it was nice. I never did get much into the mechanical end of things but it has always interested me. Was always too busy with the autobody. My firebird was my first car and I bought it to work on in my pre apprentice course .... back in 87. I have thought of selling it a few times but always changed my mind. Now its a lifetime keeper.

As for the paint ..pricey yes, $800/qt in 2000 when I painted it.

The paint changes to 6 different colors, but now I find it too flashy for the car. I will be going to something a little more age specific when I redo it. Its hard to redo as there is nothing wrong with it.

Talked to the truss guy yesterday, I guess he had a longtime employee leave to go to a teaching job so he is a bit behind. He said to check in next Wednesday. That timing is bad as that would be my last day off. But hopefully they will be done then. we still have a bit of good weather left, so no panic yet:)

bummer if no roof before winter. why is your work busier in the winter?

jim

Oh the roof will be on before the winter. I Just wanted to put it on during my last days off.

I work 4 days on 4 days off at a pulpmill ,and also work part time at a bodyshop on my days off, or any other time available. The bodyshop doesn't have enough work for a full time painter so it works well for me. During the winter the shop does get busier so less time at home. I truly enjoy painting but with the pulpmill having a full pension I wouldn't go back full time to autobody.

You certainly do some nice painting! Who knows, maybe I will drag my Skylark down to you for its paint job... I am having trouble finding a reasonably priced painter here.

Well the trusses still aren't ready. :headscrat Call back next Monday he says. Hopefully they are ready then, as my next days off are Monday to Thursday. If so, I should have the roof done by the end of the days off :)

Holy Cow, It took awhile but the trusses finally came in and we took advantage of the nice day yesterday. We have had alot of rain lately so we were lucky they came in on a sunny day. :bounce: We quickly put them up and got the ladders made but the shorter days prevented us from sheathing. I do have to put up the final bracing so hopefully on my next days off we will get that done and shingled.

I went with a 9" energy heel and vaulted ceilings. I wondered about the vaulted ceiling but am glad I went with it.

Huge step getting the roof setup!

I had to scrape ice off the windows in the truck this morning..... I hope you get some more warm weather to get that garage sealed up.

Keep up the great work, and be careful climbing around up there....

well after a bit of a hiatus, mostly due to rain on almost every day since we got the trusses up there was finally a window of opportunity to get the sheathing and shingles on. Between trying to work 2 jobs and horrible weather, this was a challenge.

After getting a bit of time to do some planning I am seriously thinking about putting windows in the vaulted area. Not sure what would look better 2 or 3 windows on each side of center. ( the left side of center has a tree in the background making it look like another window divider)

It's been awhile since I've been here. Trying to see if I remember how to do this. Garage is well on its way. Had a bit of a hiatus last winter because of my the late start. And during this past summer was helping others with there projects. Will load pictures shortly of some more progress.
