picking it up at 1pm tomorrow, how do you like the one you picked up looks kind of small next to the big C.........lol

I have a 1760. It is an excellent vise. I use it every day, and have no reason to treat it with kid gloves.
If you need a vise so stout that a 1760 is breaking, you need a hydraulic press.

the 1780 is totally small and light in comparison to the c3. I have zero issues moving the 1780 around, but that c3 makes me see stars. Its got to be permanently affixed to a base soon or i will be. the 1780 is still a dam nice vise, but not on the same level as the big machinists vises. For how i use my vises the 1780 is defiantly more practical.

I tested if the 1780 swivel base is interchangeable with the C3 and it fits like a glove. I'll post my pics of that and what i found out about interchangeability in the vise 101 thread.

How far does that vise open up? I don't know if it's just the picture, or what, but that looks ridiculously wide.

thats cool the swivel fits it, that C3 is huge.
they have a pair of 1765 tradesmans in are destruct cage at work pretty good size vise and the 1780 is bigger, from the pics i seen i don't think i will be dissapointed

Youngguns: My Parker 956 is my outside vise and never measured how wide it opens. I can tell you that a full size garbage bag fits tight over it and a medium Rubbermaid storage tub doesn't. 
Verg: now that you know the C3 has other options for a used swivel base maybe you can put in your request in on the vise parts thread for one. those C3's as i mentioned before ate up their swivel bases if the users put too much stress on them. by the way that 1780 was a nice find and i know it isn't any little thing so can you take a picture of those 2 vises with maybe a $1 bill in the picture. now all you need is a baby bullet and you'll have all the vises any human not a member of GJ will ever need.
Tedsters: i dropped my bride off at a lamp store a couple weekends ago while i ran a couple errands. we have a little more light in our house and i think i found a couple nice additions to put on a bench when i get my shop organized.
good luck on getting both of those vises and I know they might have looked good from the pictures, but pull them apart to inspect closely before you haul them away.

I can absolutely see why the swivel bases are completely insufficient. most likely the reason why Wilton change the c3 base to the 800s base, 7'' vs 9'' diameter for inner locking plate (i don't have the dimensions of the actual base just the inner locking plate for the 800s). Unless i can CNC up a base (delusions of grandeur) i doubt i am going to add one now. The early C3's (pre 1984) share a smaller base with a ton of Wilton 6 & 8 inch vises that can be had relatively cheaply new online. After 1984 they switched to the large base, shared only with the 800s , that's a couple hundred dollars more new. I also noticed my C3 does not have a centering dowel for the center ring while the 1780 does not have a step for the outer ring to sit in.

got the 1780 home it actually looks better in person then in the pics i pulled the dynamic jaw out its dated 12-04 just exactly what he told me 10yrs old, it looks like new inside i cleaned one jaw on top just to get the rust off part of it this vise will polish up nice no dings hammer marks or nothing it looks like it just sit on the bench

I posted 3 pics of the parker in the vise thread, i don't think the wilton was maybe used a handful of times thats why he sold it.
it was in a paint shop i have no idea where there is not one speck of another color on it

the 1780a was made from 1998 on and the 1780 is before that. it appears the parts are the same for them. at least the jaws and spindle part numbers that i checked.
