According to Bend Pack my lift has a 2 HP motor and I wired for that while my lift was in storage assuming the NEC 2 HP full load amp rating for conductors at 240V. I used 12 gage wire with 6 conductors in EMT derating the capacity 20% using the 60° table that comes out to 16 amps. Fine for a 12 Amp FLC rating of a 2 HP NEC spec motor, but it turned out that my motor name plate does not state the HP and lists a FLC as 17.

I find that if I could use the 75° table I should be fine in that the derated current capacity would be 20 amps 18% over the FLC.

But how do I know if I can use this. The THHN wire is definitely good but the NEC also requires all terminations and enclosures to be rated for 75°. I found printed in the tiniest print possible that my circuit breaker is good for 75°. But I cant find any date on my panel enclosure. I also couldn't find anything on the Bryant L14-20 receptacle its plugged into as far as terminations, but they do give it a -40°C to 85°C continuous operation range without degradation.

Any ideas?

Since your breaker is rated at 75* c and if u ever find the rating on the outlet to be 75* c(which it souds like u found it to be good to 85* c) then i would derate the #12 wire using the 90* c column. IIRCC, i think the NEC says terminations points but nothing about enclosures, eg. your panel... I would have to look it up to be sure and unfortunately my book is in the shop at work.... :/

I don't know of a common hoist that specs a wire larger than 12. I woud try a 20A on it, if it tripped would put a 30 or I might do it anyway depending on what I had on hand. Putting a wire larger than that will just make the breaker trip faster, the thing runs for 50 seconds at a time.

I've been running it with a 15 amp breaker for many years but haven't had any vehicles over 5000Lb on it yet.

The way I understand the motor code, the breakers can be rated significantly higher than the wire capacity.

Yes but is operating temperature the same as termination temperature. I would think so, but what does the NEC think.

As far as the enclosure rating, I'm reading the 2014 NEC Handbook , by Mark Early, Christopher Coach, Mark Cloutier and Gil Moniz. This book contains the complete 2014 code as well as explanations of the code. It is in the explanations that the enclosure temperature is discussed as needing to be considered, but I cant find it anywhere in the text of the code itself. It also shows a picture of a temperature rating on an enclosure. Next time I have the cover off mine I will take a look.

Yes this is because the breaker only protects against ground faults and sort circuits. The overloads(in the motor or starter) protect the wire and motor from overloads...

I don't think my hoist has thermal. There is a sticker on it that says it,,, but again, an operator standing there holding a switch for 50 seconds. The motor on the Mohawk is not quite that sturdy, almost 14 A and they allow 14 and 30A and list the operation at 43 seconds.
I am not real familiar with the Bendpak but I suspect it falls just under legal with a 12 cable.
