Getridaone,---The paint you put on the Flex, looks like the same color and kind of paint that Starrett used on their vises.---I like it.---Super job.---That is a real museum piece.---There is only one more in all of this thread that I know of, and it's on page 90.---But that one has some sort of plug on the side of the housing.---Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for all the comments !! As usual I could not find an exact match for the paint. I started with a darker blue base and over sprayed a lighter blue.
It has a lot more metal to clean up than a regular vise.
drivsit: that stand is the one I posted a few weeks ago. I used a 25 lb weight and welded a 1" rod for the swivel in top of the base. I think it is a 4 way swiveler now :dunno:

Had a broken plate in the swivel seller thinks its 3k new but I see you can buy for 1100 on amazon
He turned down $400 which I am pretty sure was a good if not to good an offer

It was from 1956
Thank you

Me thinks the seller is uninformed on more than one account. Classic case of my stuff is worth more because it is mine. About 3x on both IMHO.

Kevin, " I would love to see that 938 a little closer, curious to the swivel lock mechanism. "
I added a few pictures of the locking base to the original post.

Thanks Kenny, I am impressed with your latest vises. The Flexvise gets top honors this week thats for sure. Really slick lock mechanism on the 938, storing that set up in my memory bank.

Yup, its an Asian import. I have a 5" one on my welding table that sees a good deal of welding abuse ;) They work as long as you don't need to tighten on anything too much ... or pound on the part being held. Unless you want to see what your import looks like in pieces :dunno:

A rusty garage-sale find ... you'd be over-paying at $20. IMHO

I went to check this out at lunch today. Not a name or marking on it. They were asking $50. Nice, old, most probably USA vise, but without a brand I wasn't willing to pay much for it as a collector item.

BJ42LX, you might have missed your chance at a good old vise. If it wasn't broken or jaws all messed up I would have payed $50 Manufacturers would make vises for private companies and put no name on them. That is a part of vise collecting trying to figure out who might have made it :dunno:
va & olddh Thanks for the correction and sorry for the confusion

Getridaone.---oldldh can make a ******* out of a double swiveler, possibly a triple swiveler, but I think you've stumped him.

Hey Oldldh,

I've got something for you

Is this color red Arresty enough for you? I'm about to paint the 5198 and want to make sure the color is perfect

This is from another vise I'm working on. I tried to get a full on shot but I just couldn't keep my iPad steady:evil:

This is either the largest swivel compound vise I have ever seen or the dolly is super small. I just may call him tomorrow to just get a guesstimate on its weight. It looks firkin huge!

http://chicago.craigslist.org/sox/tls/4717440501.html

He says it's a 6-inch vise, so that dolly likely has skatewheels on it. But the funny part is he wants $275 or trade for a vintage motorcycle.

Sure, a nice bike for $275......

Mike, I measured my swivel clamp parts from my Reed 1C (same base as 203 1/2)

Hopefully KM Scott doesn't get upset with me for modifying his drawing!

PS just noticed you have a 403 1/2 swivel jaw nice score!

Bluebolt-The base has a 5/8 hole for the bolt (scaling from afar) so the only thing that may be different is the radius. I'll see about making one here soon.

I'm not even sure how that 403 1/2 came to me but glad I have it. Love the swivel jaws, the design and look of the vises from this time period.

Thanks guys-nice group here.

Zoomie: nice collection for some and probably just a drop in the bucket to add to the basement crew for you. not a bad vise or anvil in the bunch. is your barrel shaped multy swiveler a flexivise like Get's or is that an old Parker? in anycase i want one of those or at least to see in person. don't hurt yourself taking them to the basement or did you install a dumbwaiter?

cheers

BC: nice color and how is the 5198 coming along now that your garage isn't over 100 degrees?

My garage has cooled down considerably and in fact, it's about 68 and cloudy right now. There was a chance of rain so I cancelled any primer and paint

The 98 is bare for now but when the weather gets warmer, it's ready for primer then paint. I should have it assembled but not finished before Halloween.

I still need to finish polishing the op handle and the rest of the unpainted parts

I like the silver and small bullets and the one with a machine crank type wheel for the handle. Do you have a name or catalog scan of that one? I'm curious as to how they advertised that feature. :headscrat:

zoomie, What is the one with the wheel on it ? It is cool looking and rotates too. I am glad I don't collect anvils, that a very expensive habit

I think it's called a 'bicycle vise', it seems to me some posted an ad a while back, but I didn't keep it...
The front jaw swivels and it rotates 360' along with swiveling 360'.

The other two are quite unusual too.

Take care,

That color is awfully close to perfect...

As in this "Properly Restored" 5196...

We await the unveiling with baited breath...

Are you going to use the "New Rough Cut" trap door in your living room???

Cause if you put any more iron on that floor...:willy_nil

You're going to have one...

I have an Athol 624N I'm in the process of restoring. I don't know how to go about removing the jaws. Has anyone seen jaws like this before? What's the purpose and how do I remove them? Also anyone know what the N stands for in the 624 or a time window for when it might have been manufactured. Thanks

That center pin is just for alignment, though it might be pretty tight on either the jaw insert or the casting. If you can't pull it by hand you will have to tap it from whatever edge you can get to with a screwdriver & hammer.

N usually means stationary base (as opposed to a swivel base).

My Columbian 505. Traded a Wen 1/2" drill for it in 1973. Excuse the mess.

Smaller Columbian on my tool box. Notice the Hardie hole on this small vise. Bought it at a flea market years ago for $7.
