Gany,

Athol/Starrett did the zero backlash spring, and a couple other companies did here and there. You can get a tube that just clears the threads and notch it to clear the pin to make both install and de-install easier.

+1 I bought a piece of 1" pipe and notched each side about 1/4" up. Reinstallation is a breeze

There are 2 Prentiss 20s (4.5" swivel static jaw) on my local and semi local CL. They are the ones with the cool graffiti writing. They want 300 and 325. Are these really that expensive? Seems about double to triple price to me. I managed to score an even older prentiss 20 as my first vise score, but I would love to find one of these too. Any thoughts?

Jot: that little Craftsman probably weighs 25 pounds and has been worked pretty hard in it's life. maybe made in Japan in the 70's. if you want to spend the time on bringing it back to life it is a decent vise, but there are a lot of those vises out there so i'd wait for another one. here's one that a guy that does a pretty decent job spiffing up vises did to a similar vise. also the red one is what that vise looks like on the other side and in it's original condition.

JRobb: you moved into the high end of what those Prentiss vises are really worth, but when you were buying 2 for a Benjamin almost every week that can only last so long. hope the move worked out and any pictures of your vise crew and have you had time to clean them up yet?

Scooter: nice old vise and i'm guessing it has the single bolt straight down out of the bottom, but hard to tell when it's sitting on a bucket. I've seen the missing pipe jaw you have and you'll have to get a decent size piece of steel to make one.

Jason: wouldn't a sleeve like Gany mentioned be a good option to maybe removing the spring all together? that way if you did have any slop your bronze thrust washers could be used to remove any slop if the sleeve couldn't be put in the exact position to eliminate any. just a thought.

i think the Record vices also have those springs on them, but some of those i think have to be there because of the quick release mechanism.

Canoe: Sounds like you have a plan and whenever you get the rest of the gang out of the corners for the family picture we'll still be here. have you tried to put anything in the big vises on those stands with the rollers under them? since your vises are a couple of BIG guys I was just wondering if they might tip over and be top heavy with the wheels under the stands. i hope i'm wrong because i have several big stands i'd like to put wheels under if that would work.

I hear what you're saying, but no, haven't put anything big in either one & likely won't. If I ever do, the C2 would get bolted to the bench for that. It's a valid concern you bring up, so I would just advise to proceed with caution when you're not sure. That is, take it slow & think ahead about what you're doing & ask yourself...is this a safe thing to do?
I'm not in the position to say it's safe to leave it on wheels for something big & would never say doing so is OK. That goes for anything where safety is a concern if I'm not certain.
Honestly, a 205 lb. vise is over-kill for my needs. But after seeing it in person, I had to have it. I just wanted it.
Mobility is key for me now & why both are on wheels. That likely will change at some point, at least for the C2.

What I struggle with now is need vs. want, case in point the C3. At 64 years old, there really isn't much I need at this point in my life. I sure as hell don't NEED 20 vises, but I have them.
Don't worry about me beating you to another vise....I'm done. They're all yours.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I said that same thing at twenty vises.---That was 35 vises ago.---Your are hooked, you're just in denial.---It's a good addiction.---Embrace it!

I get where you're coming from. I admit I was hooked for awhile, but not anymore. If I was, that C3 would be here & I'd be posting pictures of it. No denial. I've just reached that point where I no longer want another one & now may casually look if I see one along the way. When I started asking myself....what the hell am I doing?.....I knew the addition was coming to a end. I will admit the C3 (along with the stand) isn't something I'll likely ever see again locally & that was a tough battle going on in my head. If I could do it over again......who knows? :)

Yes, exactly like wrenchguy's oswego. Thanks wrenchguy, yours was the one I was referring to that someone still had theirs. Ive seen a few different bolts so I'm not certain which is factory. I'll just be making something, and will likely just remove the 2nd pipe jaw for the effect of that huge throat. I guess I'll just use an old 5 lb york plate for the other piece. Not sure what I'm doing with this beast yet, just felt the need to have 1 huge vise.

That's the same point I'm at with pretty much everything now. No point keep collecting stuff if it's not going to be be sorted and put into service, so now I'm working on making the stuff I already have here ready for use and then using it before I start adding to again, if desired. It would have to be either something special or a really keen price to grab my attention at the moment.

Yea,---I keep telling myself, "I can quit any time I want to".---I think it's starting to work.---If I just don't see a 209,-- 408,--05198--a Simplex 81S,--an 8 inch Ridgid,--an 8 inch Sawyer,--a 926 Starrett,--an 8 inch Prentiss,--a C.P. 978,--an 8 inch Rock Island,--an 8 inch Record,--and a hoard of other brands and sizes,--I'll be fine.

Now about those anvils.

Now about those anvils.

[I know, wrong thread - sorry!]

I saw this one go off at auction last night for $224 out the door.

A nice anvil on a very interesting base. It was held on by one loose bolt so the auctioneer was selling it as a "swivel anvil". :wtf: Just two guys bidding on it. The winner was very pleased with the price.

The only vise at the sale was one of those Chinese rotator double-jawed thingies.

Hi guys,
This is my first post here. I am looking to buy a decent bench vise and after looking for some information I quickly stumbled upon this forum and immediately decided to register. Dang, there's some good info here!!! I'm living in Belgium and near my place there's a york vise for sale for €30:
http://www.kapaza.be/nl/doe-het-zelf-en-bouw-overige/bankschroef-88779146.htm
This weekend I'm going to take a look, but I have a feeling I'm going to buy it anyway after reading several of the threads here about the history of york/wilton and so on.

By the way, have you seen this restoration project?
http://pinoyhandyman.com/showthread.php?t=2995
Clear step by step explanation and pictures.

I'm glad I've found this community!!

Hey pozidriv, not sure if anyone got back to you, welcome to the forum.

Prices can very quite a bit from one region to another, €30 ($40?) sounds alright for a nice York vise, that one looks in good shape.

That restore you have on the link, not sure where I got the link but saw this a few months back. Nice restore and good read. Good luck on your vise purchase...the first of many if you stay on this thread. :)

9450 is a 4 1/2" jaw vise and 250 is at least a hundred bucks too much. I think.
If that's the only used vise thats come up in your area for the last year and you've got enough money then maybe buy it.

I found a Wilton Model 9450 on craigslist, the guy is asking $250, what is a good going price for this vise?

Little high, depending on where you're at (Alaska price much different than Detroit)!! See if you can negotiate down in 100's (ie below $200) and you'd have nice lifetime vise.

Bring variety of bills with you, and work out deal to bring it home !! :D

I've said this many times: "Unfortunately vintage vises are under valued". That being said, a fair retail price for that vise, restored to new would be his asking price.
However, I wouldn't pay more than $100.00 in its condition.

Times are still tough and there is plenty of vintage arn vises out there for a better price.

That's my opinion.

Happy Trails!

That stand looks like it was the base for an old cream separator. One of my anvils sits on a very similar stand. Mine has a board bolted to it so it doesn't swivel and puts it at just the right height.

Nice

Just me or is a 4.5" vise not that large? When it comes to machine tools I think people tend to throw around the large/huge/massive word too often. :dunno:

That's the thing, this forum consists of vise, tools and car enthusiasts, we are crazy! The average Joe on the street will tell you he has a humongous vise, it has to be at least 50 lbs :willy_nil

I just picked up a prentiss bulldog 264. Pics are 2 pages back I think. Made in CT not NY. I have 7 vises now so I'm being very selective of what I get as I don't "need" anymore. I do want one of those prentiss 20s with the fancy letters though. And rock islands I would also buy. There is a bead blaster at work so I think I'll clean the bulldog up with that. Move is going good, job is good.

^ ^ ^ That's funny right there !! :)

Guy received the swivel anvil as gift from his neighbor who was plastic surgeon specializing in finger re-construction. Lots of repeat "business" on that setup !!

picked this up today. What little I do know from this forum, Smiths Combination vise No 3 possibly made by Oswego (Ny), sold by the Oil Well Supply Co, Pittsburgh PA (actually Oil City PA). This co was bought out in the 30's. Ill give it it;s own thread when I get into it

View media item 44283

i believe this is the only smith's i seen on the vise mothership without the jaw inserts busted out of it and no jaw tower damage. i think these were abused in this manner by using it more of a pipe vise and exceeding its designed capacity. good luck with it.

Yeah, about those anvils. I was in much better control with those....only had 5 & now down to 2. That's where I'm staying.

That Wilton is stunning, it looks to good to actually use, if you ever sell it I would pay a lot for it.
In other news I have bought an 8" jaw Record, which should be with me next week, hopefully it wont turn out to be a pile of ****, as it cost enough, but I have been looking for a big one for long enough.
