You know you fellows are starting to make think that fooling with vises is kryptonite.---Now if I do find that 209 I'm going to be scared of it.

The "Ever Elusive 5198" has been found...

Who's to say you won't find the 209???

(I would be scared of it, too...if I had to move it!!!)

Why does the vise with the Mountain Dew an on it have a Hollands static jaw and a Yost dynamic jaw?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Got this off (Everything you need to know about bench vises).

Yost: Yost, along with Wilton is one of the few American vise makers left that still manufactures in the USA. They offer an assortment of USA vises. Yosts were made in Meadville , PA however, they are made in Holland Michigan today. the higher end Yosts still are. Beware of imports carrying the Yost name.

Can't tell if that's Holland or Hollands on the static, from the picture.

Tarnished:

Autopts: the elves in the garage of yours keep churning out those nice big old US vises. very nice Morgan and with the pipe jaws too.

I had 2 identical ones and sold them to one guy that was putting them on the back of his service trucks. which I thought was odd being that they were so nice.
Here's a good one!! I sold that 800S to a HD equipment mechanic and he's welding a big swivel platform on the back of his service vehicle and mounting the 800S on the back. I told him I wanted a photo when he was finished mounting it.
Oh, and I forgot Everyone I tell this story too wants to know where he keeps his truck. LOL I can't say

Hi folks

OK, here's one I'm having some trouble valuating. It's apparently an Athol 728, 3.5" jaw, 5" opening, for $75. Does anyone have any info?

Thrumcap: it looks like a double swiveler so if you can get out that hammered on pin and there isn't any welds or cracks under all that black paint you have a keeper especially at $75. pipe definitely needs a new one from Ritzblitz and not sure what it is.

Autopts: nice to see these old vises getting put back in service and i took a picture of what i think was a 6 inch Wilton on the back of utility truck the other day that was in front of me at a red light. I also sold a pretty nice 1945 Wilton C1 to a client that needed one to replace a stolen one off his work truck and here's how he mounted it.

by the way your picture is like Where's Waldo and i never did find the 800 mounted on it. you might want to rub out the client's phone # on his truck door if you are able. thanks for sharing

My new vise (BFV) & homemade stand; start to finish.

Broke my old crappy one, bought a new one:

Also bought a stand off of the scrap pile (some assembly required):

Cut the smiles off using my plasma cutter:

Cleaned up the squares:

vise-stand-d_zpsa25c8b38.jpg

Then welded the two plates together:

Added feet and metal casters:

After welding and gussied up with gussets:

Sprayed some 'pretty' onto it:

Finished. Wheels around nicely by holding the vise shaft and tipping it back a bit. Weighs in ~300lbs:

It was hard to read upside down, after a second look I realize the static jaw says Yost on it too. The Holland is the where it was made, doesn't say Hollands.

Working on that Streamliner yet?

A friend tipped about this Record No6 which was for sale.
For 25 euro seems to me not a bad deal.

He wants to refurbish it and use in his car garage.

Two new to me Prentiss vises I picked up from craigslist today. He was asking $90 for the pair. Not a killer deal, but I felt a pretty good one as both appear essentially unused with no evidence of beating or grinding. The larger one still wears most of its rusty black paint. I didn't haggle as it was 8 am and his phone was ringing non stop about them. He posted the ad overnight.

1) Smaller Prentiss Bulldog # 253 1/2 ("old no. 513"), meridian ct
- 3 1/2 inch. I learned a bit overnight. Likely made by Parker in CT after they took over Prentiss in the 40's.

2) Larger "Prentiss" Marked only "PRENTISS NY" in small letters just at the very back top of the static jaw base, just to the rear of the rotating jaw. 4 inch jaws. My overnight research said it was one of the "unmarked" prentiss vises made for unknown reasons by Prentiss. Evidenced by, well, no markings, fixed jaws, and missing a small piece of webbing on the lower forward end of the fixed jaw base (compare the two in the pic).

The prentiss ny marking actually threw me. The what appears homemade pin did pull out, but the jaw did not swivel. Really excellent condition.

All other info or input is welcome. Thank you

Grab it quick.
I have this friend tipped, he sought for some time a vise for his workshop.
The vise has today delivered and he seems happy.

I already have a Paramo No6, see caption:)
This No6 had required a 'minor revision'...

Can anyone help me identify this vise? It seems to be well built and it's pretty heavy, but the lack of a name makes me wonder if it is some kind of a knockoff.

5" wide jaws, opens to 6".

Wilton Mechanics vise, since it looks like the pipe jaws are cast in I think it is the Chinese version.

Both the upper and pipe jaws are removable. Is that what distinguishes a USA-made Wilton from a Chinese-made version?

There is one here locally for $75 and it is a Wilton mechanics vise with 4" jaws. The Made in USA is cast into the body of the vise.
How much are they asking for that one?
