I've been thinking about coating my garage floor for about a year. The concrete is only 2yrs old and there are a few stains that I've degreased. I get a good discount on sherwin williams products and have access to their commercial items as well.

Does sherwin make a good coating, or should I forfit my 40% discount and use a different brand?

My SW sales rep recommended shot blasting the floor for prep but the rental on that machine is over $400 for a day. I am thinking of griding instead, this is the machine that I can rent locally, will this work?

I would highly recommend that you use Sherwin William’s Armor Seal1000 HS. Read my thread about my experience. Though I had a major problem with two areas, Sherwin Williams made me whole in the end.
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2230

I shot blasted mine. I would say that shot blasting is less work overll, and far less messy, than grinding. Four years ago I rented the equipment from Jordan’s off I-77 in Cleveland. The rental was $250.00 per day. http://www.jordanpower.com/ They would allow you to pick it up on Friday Morning and drop it off on Monday morning and use it all weekend for that price.

My place is 45 minutes from North Royalton. If you’d like to see what 3,500 square feet of Sherwin William’s epoxy coating look’s like after four years use, contact me. And you can see it first hand...

Oldcarguy? what did you use for mixing the 2 parts in the epoxy???? usually that is where the biggest problem with epoxy paint(not getting thouroughly mixed)...

second question... what kind of machine did you use for application of paint?

company I used to work for in south eastern iowa used Graco GM3900 paint machines for stuff like this... we also bought everything from sherwin williams.... (highly recommended by me)

Wow, great info! Didn't come across your thread when I did a search. I appreciate the link for the shot rental, I will defenitely be calling them. I want to use the color flakes and traction additive as well. Thinking I should try to do it in May when temps are stable.

I thoroughly mixed the two epoxy in a five gallon bucket with a Milwaukee 1/ 2" drill and the mixer that Sherwin William’s recommended and purchased from their store. Then spread the epoxy using rollers that I purchased from Sherwin William’s.

I first coated the floor with their Amorseal 33 primer. The primer was completely dried and you could walk on it. Then I applied a top coat of Amorseal 1000HS within the recommended window of time. The two problem areas came from different mixes. And only a small part of each batch caused any problems. Somehow the top coat reacted with the primer coat that was already hardened. Sherwin William’s had no answers; but in the end made me whole. The lab test indicated that the epoxy was mixed properly...

You may want to do some research about adding color chips and grit. I didn’t add either. I prefer a smooth floor and not add grit. Although it will be far more slippery when wet with water or oil. It a lot easier to clean. Though the floor will show less imperfections when chips are added, small items are harder to find when dropped on the floor.

I used 1000 HS as well. I'm happy with it. I beat the crud out of it. I don't think I've cleaned my floor for over a year now. Lots of chemicals, oils, gas, etc. on the floor. Not terribly impact resistant, but I'm guessing that came from my installation during December.

I also like the idea that I could pick it up at Sherwin Williams if I needed more. Comes in handy in a bind.

Even with your discount, figure out your cost per mil of thickness and compare that price to the price of a good 100% solids epoxy like the Wolverine.
Before I did my Wolverine job, I asked my local SW dealer what my discount cost would be on the 1000HS and it was about $73 a gallon. I may not get as good of discount as you though. I can't remember exactly but I think the 1000HS is something like 60% or 70% solids. Also, I have read that the 1000HS doesn't self-level very well and the solvent really stinks the place up.
I can tell you that the Wolverine 100% solids is $75 a gallon and self-levels very well and no solvents means very little odor.

Funny thing happenned over the weekend! I went to my local Sherwin Williams store to inquire about their epoxy for my garage floor. I was trying to explain to them that my floor was in great shape, but they cut me off right away - they said that no epoxies are recommended for any concrete floor. Nothing will ever stck. :headscrat
Then they strongly receommended I uses tile for the floor - like the VCT they had down in their store. I looked at the 2 of them and asked - "This is a paint store - right." :dunno:

Talk about confusing the **** out of me!!!!!!!!

Don't be confused. They don't know what they are talking about.

Armstrong does not recommend their VCT tiles for use on a garage floor.

Fact: When concrete is prepped correctly, epoxy sticks.

I got pricing yesterday from my SW contact. Here is his breakdown for my garage which is about 750sf

Armorseal
Color Part A - 67.50 x 3 = 202.50
Color Part B - 67.50 x 3 = 202.50
* 1 Gallon of Part A and 1 Gallon of Part B = 1 kit Clear Part A - 58.95 x 1 = 58.95 Clear Part B - 67.50 x 1 = 67.50
* A 2nd kit of clear may be needed
Non-Skid Additive - 4.17 x 6 = 25.02
Decorative Flakes - 15.44 x 2 = 30.88
* You may need more or less depending on how thick they are applied.
Total = 587.35

This is a bit higher than I expected. My concrete sales rep is recommending a locally made product by Euclid Chemical, he said it breathes and allows moisture to escape the slab much better than the SW product.

I would call Fred at AlphaGarage for a quote on Wolverine.
Realize that their system has a design thickness of 22 mils and the cost is $75 per gallon for 100% solids. I looked up the 1000 HS and it is 65% solids on the color and 61% on the clear. The Wolverine is 35% more product for only $7.50 more a gallon from your discount SW price.
I don't know anything about Euclid Chemical. But do the same type of price comparison when you get the info on it.

No kidding!!!! I walked in expecting to come out with some product. :headscrat But both guys behind the counter agreed with oneanother. There was absolutely no hesitation in their response at all! I truly wasn't expecting such a reaction.

I was on the fence between epoxy vs VCT! Those 2 so-called SW experts might have made the decision for me!!!!

Keep us updated on what you go with. I'd like to see what Euclid Chemical is selling. What did he say it is?

My concrete guy recommends a high solids Xylene based acrylic sealer.

I will follow-up when I get more info. At this point I don't even know the name of the product he is talking about. Euclid chemical has a fantastic reputation locally so I am also interested to learn about this product. I found these two websites with basic info.

You probably got the Shield Crete http://www.hc-concrete.com/products/shield-crete-epoxy/garage-floor-coating/index.jsp.

This is what my SW rep said about Sheild Crete vs. Armorseal.........

"The Armorseal 1000 HS is an alternative to the Shield-Crete Garage Floor
Epoxy. Armorseal 1000 HS is not a 100% solids product, in fact 100%
solid epoxies are very difficult to use and I would not recommend them
for this situation. That being said the Armorseal would be a slightly
better product to use due to higher volume solids than the Shield-Crete
and a larger range of colors. Both are viable options and I will give
you information on both."

Both my local places said the 1000HS is better than shieldcrete. The ShieldCrete is a DIY water based kit. The 1000HS is a solvent based commercial product.

Not True.
Not all 100% solids epoxies are "very difficult to use".

Granted, the pot life of 100% solids is shorter than a water or solvent based product and I would say they take a little more pre-planning but they are not that difficult. Many, many on this forum have used 100% solids products with great success.

well i got a price quote of 81.29 per gallon for the Armorseal so to do my 2 car garage would equal 344.67 including 6% sales tax.
Even with a direct buy account the price went UP:eek7: to 108 i think. somethings screwy here:headscrat

It did go up but you can talk them down more. I paid $68 on Saturday. Retail is over $160 with an average street price of around $100.

I would make sure you get what you want.

I was not impressed at all with the Shield - Crete. Put it down about 2 years ago. Seemed "thin" to me and scratches up pretty easily. Have actually considered re-doing my floor.

hmm what was your leverage for them to lower the price. Ive probably spent 400 the past month on paint for the house. 68 sounds pretty reasonable and i wouldnt have to worry about shipping.

RyanM with that comment i think im gonna hold off on the shieldcrete since i do alot of work in my garage on the bikes.
