Not a garage sale but a CL deal involving a garage sale purchase. I had a wanted ad out for a piece of steel plate to build a welding table with, asking for 1/2" or thicker. A while back a guy contacted me and said he had a 2" thick piece roughly 1,000 lbs for sale but he was an hour away and I have not had time to get over there. Fast forward to yesterday, I had that planer that I picked up last weekend at a garage sale listed on CL and a guy from the same town as the metal plate guy called wanting it. Long story longer:)D), we worked out a deal and he picked up the plate from the other guy and delivered it to me along with $40 cash in exchange for the planer. Basically, I paid $40 for this big *** plate that will soon become my new welding table. :rocker:
Anyone know how I can calculate rough weight, the PO was guestimating it at 1,000.

Woa, that's nice, and delivered. What are the dimensions? How flat is it? Make sure you put it on a sturdy base.

Thanks Sac, I remembered google was my friend after posting and found the calculator on line. It is 1016.49 lbs minus the couple bolt holes. :scared:

Z, it's 27-1/8" x 66" x 2" thick. It looks pretty flat but has some pitting in spots, I think the bottom is slightly better but has dirt caked on it atm. I'll be on the lookout for some sturdy leg material now, can't decide if I want to make room for it inside or leave it outside the shop. :dunno:

Good size for a welding table. Keep an eye out for some large, heavy wall square tubing to make a frame and legs.

u don't have a central steel product book? it list weights by square or lineal foot.

It's much faster to do the volumetric calculation for most objects like that. Just remember .284 lbs to the in^3

I would have cheated, I would have put it on my trailer and gone to the nearest scrap yard and paid them to put it on the scale.

(a) I don't have money running out my ears

and

(b) I like my tires, have you seen the sharp **** on the ground at scrap yards?

I try to hit the scrap yard with my scrapping buddy, in his truck  Speaking of scrap buddy, I have him lined up for tomorrow to bring my lathe over to the new shop...finally. Fingers crossed...

So how much weight do you engineers estimate the rust has removed?

Remove only the rust from the plate.
Put it in a tank big enough for the plate, but measure the height of the water from a reference point and be very accurate here. Then after putting the plate in the water measure again and then do the volume equation. This will require very accurate, stable, and precise equipment!!!

Or just go with a ball park value and save your money! :lol_hitti

Shouldn't the weight of the plate be increased with the rust present? As long as it is just surface rust, the weight should be greater due to the oxygen molecules that have attached themselves during the rusting process.

Don't be afraid to walk away from a deal!

I was just in my fave old pawn shop diggin around for tools and ran up on these tools. I get to the counter and the cashier starts off with $5 ea on the files so I said keep them, then he noticed the Snap On ratchet and went to ask the boss since SO is supposed to be locked up in the display case. He turns to the boss and says, "what do you want to do about this", boss never even looked, just said give him all those tools for $20. Well, that may be a deal but not the deal I was looking for, I say thanks, but I'll pas and go to walk away. Counter guy looks at me crazy and asks how much I was thinking, I say $10, boss did't bat an eye, he says "let him have it". So for $10 + tax, I walked with the NOS Nicholson files, Snap On ratchet and socket, Proto extension and Craftsman 10-13 & 19 metrics. :willy_nil

Got this off cl this morning for $80, it does not power on, any ideas before I tear the case open?ImageUploadedByTapatalk1400086549.191706.jpg

Thanks Guys!

May be bluebolt, it's dated 12/2013 so either late last years model or early this years model. I am beyond thrilled, speechless over here. It came with the tie down harness but was missing the original pilot pins, chip hook and hex key according to the manual. One thing I like is the lil Made In U.S.A. sticker :thumbup

Drill and tap a hole for a screw in lifting eye and drag it behind your truck.

Great idea, I could do some doughnuts in the sand at the park around the corner!! :lol_hitti

That plate is the reason I picked this mag drill up back in May, I had a vision and it is finally coming together :rocker:

Just need to find some bits now. I plan on drilling/tapping a grid on it for hold downs. The plate already has a few holes drilled in it but they aren't tapped.

BTW, I thought I would have the lathe brought over today but it ended up raining and nasty weather so hopefully one day this week when my guy gets free again. Hope you were not in a rush

I haven't had a chance to post much this summer, but I thought these items were pretty cool. This was all in box lot that I bought at an auction for $2. Sears model 3111 ratcheting screwdriver and the black one just says made in Germany on it. Both work great.

A not so little Craftsman pocket level model 4624, that looks like it has never been used. Can be used as a surface level or you use it as a sighting level. You hold it up and look through it. There is sort of a mirror that shows the position of the bubble against a grid. Hopefully, if time permits, I can post a few more items.

As Bill Withers said, IT'S A LOVELY DAY!!!

Two sales planned this morning, it was raining and 30's so the first one canceled, second was a Regionally Featured estate sale listed as "EPIC"....They were right, understatement if you ask me. It was a doctor's residence, older couple and everything was vintage and older. It started at 9, I got there about 10 and walzed right in. Making my way through the mansion towards the shed out back, I saw lots of curiosities, each room was packed at least waist deep in treasures, some deeper!! I go outside to find only a few large power tools, pool furniture etc then I see a tarp that's covering an interestingly familiar shape. I quickly find a worker and have them mark it as sold, more on that in pic #3. :D

As I make my way back into the house, there are thousands and thousands of old hard back books in several different rooms, I found this old Anatomy book for $2 and scooped it up. Making my way torwards the garage inside, I see lots of medical cabinets, most are marked sold but there was a medial cart with lots of medical tools on it, I picked out the Kastoff ratchet and adaptor for $2 then giggled at the speculum before moving to the garage.

In the garage, tools are marked high and not too many that I would buy anyway. Only one cool box, a Craftsman carry two drawer with the V logo marked $40 so I pass. There was a lot of hand tools in a dresser, LOTS of Bell System(Jeff) things like Stanley screwdrivers etc, they were marked $2-4 each so I only got one pair of $4 B.S. Crescent linesman in great shape, then found the old Texaco lighter fluid for $1.

My second favorite find of the day was this cool Skull ashtray, there was a pair but at $15, I only took one. Hoping the other will be there on 50% off day I'll snag it too.
01721.jpg

Finally, my favorite find of the day and one that has been on my wish list for as long as I can remember, a Delta band saw with the slow speed attachment for metal cutting!!! This was the tarp covered item mentioned earlier, I could not believe it was marked only $75 and not sold yet!!! Baby is home safe, works great and has the retirement light, all original, nothing missing or damaged, I am in heaven right now!!!

Spent $99 and plan on going back Sat and/or Sunday for 25 and 50% off days. There was not a lot of tools, but there were some Plumb flare wrenches and a few other items that I want if they are still there on discount day.

Happy sailing this weekend guys, hope you get lucky as I feel I did!!

Nines: i didn't comment yet on your huge steel plate because i wanted to make sure you got it home without losing a finger or dropping it on your foot. nice to see it didn't get scrapped and found its way to your shop and stay out of it's way if it starts to fall.

that skull would definitely start me smoking cigars in the shop again. that looks like a perfect ashtray and not a bad paperweight when not smoking.

cheers

Provincial: I agree.

Congrats on the W/M delta, they are nice saws for the small shop. Give it a fresh drain, flush and fill on the oil (drain is on the bottom via a allen wrench, fill port right hand side via the elbow). Just use caution with that table as the trunions that attach the table to the support are very fragile, especially with the fence rails on. Did you get the fence and miter gauge too?

As a serious note on your welding table I'd start with a sharp floor scraper to knock the bulk mud and rust off.

Craigslist score and a clearance item from HD.

Kobalt (Williams USA Made) Metric wrench set, barely used.

1/2 Drive Kobalt Williams USA Ratchet and Socket set 3/8 to 1 1/4, great sockets, so-so 36 tooth ratchet. All in nice shape.

I'm hoping to find a 3/8 set at a local garage sale, I'm trying to put my first set I had has a kid back together. Before I knew better I swapped the ratchet and they gave me Taiwanese back.

I left it on the hoist until today, too much to muscle around alone or just the kid helping, someone could be seriously injured - FAST! My scrap guy brought my lathe over today so between us and the kid, we got it set on some heavy duty moving dollies. Now just waiting on my scrap guy to run up on some leg material and it's on!

I don't smoke cigarettes, only cigars but I could not pass that ashtray up, it was way too cool imo!

Thanks Drives!

Ah! the Circle of life!

Nine - GREAT SCORES!

Thanks Outlaw, I'm pumped!

Thanks Z, I saw the filler elbow but didn't get to look around for the drain so now I know where to look. The fence and miter was not with it outside, I'll check with the guy that helped me load it when I go back, he said he remembered putting it outside and what trouble it was moving it alone.

I planned on pressure washing the plate first, then scraping any remaining **** off and hitting it with a cup brush on the grinder.

My finds from the Webster Parish Louisiana 50 mile Main To Main garage sale. I only did about 30 miles and then I was out of money LOL.

Interco Super Swamper TSL Radials 33/10.50/15 with about 70% tread left. Paid $150 for all four, will either use them on my 1967 Bronco or sell them, whatever comes first LOL.

Craftsman 4 drawer box, large handwheel, "spanner tool" hammer/pry bar combo, USA C-clamp $30

A very nice old nice Craftsman hand plane, Craftsman wrenches and socket, New Britain, Proto and S-K drivers $30

Found this little green tackle box with some fishing stuff and a red pouch inside. Opened up the pouch and it was a 1/8" drive Snap On set! Never knew they existed! Couldn't get the $2 asking price out of of my wallet fast enough!

Picked up this vintage Craftsman sander for $20, looks it's circa 1935. $15

Had to run a buddy to the airport Sunday so stopped by the flea market.

Picked up another Dake 001 arbor press for $20

This bag of tools cost me $22, after sorting out the USA stuff on the right the import stuff went back in the bag for the next yard sale.

Paid $5 or the cast iron table base, may repurpose it for a small grinder.
