OK, my tool adiction might be a little different than most guys on here. But, it allows me some wrench time working on "tool" purchases. Here's some recent pawn shop finds.

First is a Efco saw. Many people don't know the brand, but they are made in Italy and are excellent pro built (vertical split) saws. This 56cc model couldn't have had a tank of fuel run in it. Someone probably didn't think it cut worth a ****....the chain was on backwards. New these run over $500. Paid $79otd for it.

Next up is a stihl 046. Ledgenary 70cc pro saw. very clean/low hour saw. Comparable new model runs around $1000. Couldn't get the $149 out of my wallet fast enough.

Most recent was a $175 Stihl 261 These are over $600 new. This one was clean low hour.

Whitedog: welcome to the forum. awesome deals on those like new chainsaws. i didn't totally understand what i was looking at in the last picture so can you show us what you did or explain it to somebody that owns a lot of small engines and doesn't normally take them apart?

of course i found a new brand of Chainsaw to buy and put on the want to own list. thanks for that. i'd never heard of Efco. where are you located?

Thanks. It's common on saws to do a muffler mod (open them up a little), set the squish, and re tune the carb for more power than stock. Basically setting the jug lower on the case by removing the gasket and just using sealer on it. You must check the clearance between the top of the piston and top of the cylinder so it doesn't hit. Shoot for around .020. I'm checking this one with plastic gauge. A lot of guys use soft solder.

I did this to my Yamaha DT250 back in the day. It had a copper head gasket that was 0.040 - 0.050 thick. Removing that in favor of a swipe of Permatex made a very noticeable difference in power and top speed.

Whitedog: not sure you have the time or would like to, but i for one would love to see a new thread showing how to up the power on any chain saw. since you are a new member it might be a good way to meet others that will probably put some input into the thread and others that really know their small engines. i'm pretty sure I'd be the one asking a lot of the questions because i'd like to learn more.

I've changed over to non-ethanol gas with an Amsoil treatment for all my small engines and wondering if others on here has any thoughts on that to extend the lives of their machines and reduce the carb cleanouts and rebuilds?

thanks for the explanation and i still am not quite sure exactly how you are doing it. i'm googling Efco.

Found this at a local pawn shop and got it for $25. I figured the ratchet was worth that much.

Armstrong 3/8" tool kit but I'm not sure if it's complete or not. All I could find online says it was an 11piece kit but don't know the parts.

Not a garage sale but free.
Allen USA 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, and 3/4.
Not sure what I will ever use them in but hard to pass up free tools.

Estate Sale - Day 1
By the time I could get there mid afternoon all the big machines were marked sold. First day prices were pretty high on many items. Reasonable on others. A few things were down right cheap. I have some items noted for the next two days. 25% off tomorrow and 50% off whats left on Friday.
I did find a few items to leave with me today.
Petersen Vice Grip
Dunlap Lever Jaw
Utica Side Cutters
Ford speed wrench
All at $1 each.

Oh, and just for fun the Elvis Christmas Album - $1

Good stuff Rickster and rmalkow2!! Looks like sales are still going good for you guys, we have a few advertised locally but nothing that really screams at me. I may try to hit a couple close ones though and see what's up.

Some nice finds going on here! Was out early today hitting a few local yard sales. First find was a Krause Multimatic 12' ladder for $20. Next a Schumacher 75Amp smart charger for $5, seems to work, guess ill find out next time I charge a battery. Finally 4 tools from a box of junk marked "$1 each" A Pexto 18" and Universal Metal Products 15" monkey wrenches, nice Crescent tin snips, perfect cutting edges, look unused, and a P&C 6215 1/2" drive speed handle. I have no use for them, and honestly don't think there is much demand either, but at a buck a piece, I just could not pass them up.

A speed handle works good for light cleaning up of threads on lug bolts. I use my speed handle and a thread chaser/tap when I rotated the tires on my vehicles.

Estate Sale Day 2

I did a quick stop back at a local 3-day ES today to see if any of my notables were left. Found a few items that were eyeballed yesterday.
A Craftsman large DBE
An 8" S wrench
A Fairmount Cleve Speed Wrench
A Craftsman C-Clamp
Estate Sale 12-5.jpg

Then I spied this little clamp on hand grinder laying on he basement floor in a pile of dust. It still worked smooth and we settled on $7.50. A little clean up and a new wheel and this will make a great tool to take on the road where power is not always available.
Hand Grinder 1.jpgHand Grinder 2.jpg

Also picked out 5 more old record albums for 75 cents each mostly for the cover art. (Not pictured) they will hang in my basement music room.

The PO of this home has 3 out buildings mostly full of more Triumph TR6 and similar cars and parts then I've ever seen before in one place. He was definitely into the little British sports car.

I am a happy (and tired) man! I have been keeping my eyes open for a large piece of plate for a welding table. Went to an estate sale at a small farm today and there was a large piece leaning against a tree. Later measurement puts it at 39" by 59" by 3/4" thick. That means it's close to 500 pounds after a little calculation. Looks flat too. Run up to the front to get a price. $15! Now to get it in the Excursion. A dolly and help from another guy got it into the truck. Glad I didn't know the weight before hand LOL. There is another slightly smaller piece behind it but the lifting ring has grown into the tree! So I go get a hatchet, wood handsaw, cold chisel (no wood chisels to be found) and a large pry bar. 30 minutes of work in a light rain and $10 later and it was mine! 30" by 66" by 3/4" works out to right at 400 pounds. I bought more stuff there I will post later, I am plumb tuckered out and it's time for a celebratory beer!

!!!!!! CALLING JEFF MOSS !!!!!!

I spotted this "BELL SYSTEM B" kit at the early bird today. The common hand tools in it were relatively modern, unfortunately, definitely not the same vintage as the kit, and not many were marked with Bell System markings. But it did have some vintage-correct electrician's pieces and I thought you'd enjoy seeing the kit itself. Fiberboard with steel corner supports and a steel handle. Love the design of the canvas fold-downs. The guy's pocket notebook was full of cool notes. A real piece of history.

I didn't buy it, Jeff.

Are you interested? If it's not raining, he'll be back tomorrow and it may still be available. The guy wanted $75 and I wasn't prepared to shell that out, especially when I'm not technically a Bell System collector*. I tried to buy some of the little metal parts cases, but he understandably didn't want to break it up.

* I have purchased a few 1940's era Bell System axes, which were carried on trucks, and had the same exact specifications as the Pioneer Kit axe on a Willys MB and Ford GPW: #4 Dayton pattern head and a 36" handle with fawn's foot end. Reconditioned, they make great stand-ins. The "Bell System" marking is usually on the face of the head that tucks into the sheath in the side of the Jeep, facing inside. So no casual on-lookers or MVPA judges are the wiser.

Nah, I have a ton of Bell stuff as it is. Really appreciate you taking the pics for me!

I know this is the garage sale thread but I was just want to say my friend Pat worked for AT&T for 30 years as a lineman and had lots of bell system stuff but sadly his garage burned down and he only has one pair left.

Sent directly from the Snap On Kool Aid factory.

Here is Friday's and today's take. Been watching high and wide for 15" Diamond adjustable wrench and I find it at a sale right on my road. This make me almost complete from 6 to 24". My neighbor down the road has sales every few months, he does the storage clean out thing, and had this wrench. Pick up a few extractors, all USA. 1/2-20 thread drill Chuck, for one of my block grinder spindles, pair of pliers, looks like slots for hose clamps.

Next is a little arbor press, $ 5.00, CM 3/4 hp motor that I may put on the scroll saw below, some Cornwall wrenches, A Stilson pipe wrench. The scroll saw is a CM King Sealy, table mount is broke, easy fix.

A 1/2 HP block grinder.

I got to a barn sale late but I did find the Columbian wood clamp that was still bolted to a ratty work bench, took me about 45 minutes to get it unburied and bolted. The Pony clamps and Williams spanner were just sitting around no one seemed interested in them so I grab them also. The big surprise was when I asked how much and the guy says $15.

Nine, the saw depth is 18". It's a model 101.23151. Do you think it'll cut some wood with the 3/4 HP?
The dake press was one of those ripped my pocket off getting the money out.
Paid $25 for the motor, and I was able to plug in and test. Then I come across another motor later in the day. Seems like I find things I never see during my first couple of stops, and come across the same things later on.

That saw would do fine with a 1/3hp, 3/4hp is a lil overkill but won't hurt anything as long as the RPM's are correct. Nice finds!!

You too 4runner, good stuff!

I agree that a 3/4hp motor on that scroll saw is a bit much, but the important number is the rpm. IIRC, the manual on that saw recommends a 1/3hp-1/2hp motor running at 1750rpm with a 2" pulley on the motor. Don't forget to change out the oil in the sump. It's a nice saw, you're going to enjoy it once it's up and running.

Picked these up as well with the box. Total was $31 for everything. P&C sockets, proto brake bleeder wrench, proto doe, matco lady foot pry bar, Blackhawk flare nut wrench, mac impact socket, and a snap ring tool?? it has little tips like snap ring pliers and you screw the red handle in and out to open or close the jaws. Any one know what it is for and the manufacturer??

Smokeshow, a few days late but those snap ring pliers look like the K-D #2011. I think it's the same as the Craftsman I have. They require two hands for holding and turning and are always fun to wrestle around with when I'm too lazy to grab fixed tip pliers.

Thanks guys. I'll need to dredge up a smaller, slower motor. For the $ 13 I paid for the saw, I'll have plenty of room to find a motor.
Just love the old cast iron stuff.

Estate Sale Day 3

Last day of a local ES and the 50% off day. It was getting pretty thin but I still found a few things that I liked.

A couple matching wood handle screwdrivers 8" and 14" with the shank running through the handle. An old 420 Channel Lock pliers and a 9" AUTO speed wrench.
Estate 12-6.jpg

A 1978 edition of the motorcycling guide.
Cycle Guide.jpg

A 3" Desmond-Stephan vise.
Desmond 1.jpg

And a vintage, very old wooden curved back creeper. Wall art for someones man cave or garage.
Creeper.jpg

Not tool related but I fell in love with this mid-century style night stand. I think it will clean up nice after a strip and re-finish.

Get some arbor adaptors and turn that puppy into a polishing machine. :D

Or, you can save it for the next table saw you pick up.

Random bunch of tools cobbled together. All obtained within the last month or so at estates sales that had minimal tools. If you search and look hard enough you can occasionally findy least one gem at sales that have ladies stuff and glassware out the wazoo. Probably about $20 for all.

Plomb Big 1 5/8" DBE wrench, Schwinn wrench, Williams ribbed BDE wrenches.

IMG_0619_zps153c9c8f.jpg

Proto obstruction wrenches, Diamond pliers, Xcelite-Orchard Park NY adjustable

IMG_0620_zpsdf960cc6.jpg

Miller Falls level, Stanley "Defiance" tape measure though it actually has no markings indicated it as such, Steel rule marked "Pratt& Whitney" I like the stuff with company names on it. Apex screwdrivers and a Indestro punch

Do the plate shieds keep the buffing debris out of the motor vents? I'm also planning on building a 2"x 72" belt sander, but may need a larger motor for that.
