Re-purposing a hand-drill drill press?

Found this Craftsman drill press "adapter" in a dumpster recently.

Don't need a drill press, already have several, and a Bridgeport, but I couldn't let it die a horrible lonely death.

Any ideas what to do with it?

I don't know if it will work with that machine, but .........

I have a similar set-up that was a small belt driven drill press. I put a leather punch in it and used it to punch holes for stitching through thick leather. I used a chisel type punch, not a hole punch.
(no pictures, it's buried in the back of a storage unit now)

If you don't have a mag drill or if you need to drill a straight hole in the center of a large sheet you can clamp it down and use it.

I had to drill a few holes in a large plate, 350 or 400 lbs, no way I was going to lift that onto my drill press not to mention it was about 20 inches from any edge so the press wouldn't have worked anyway, I put the Mil hole shooter in a similar rig and clapmed it over the spot, made a ver serviceable hole.

yeah, sad to say, that this is worth basically the aluminum melt value, given the fact that you can get an actual drill press for $52 at harbor freight with a coupon, most people can afford that.

I would just put it away and remember you have it. I'm sure there will be some strange day when you need it to prop something up or hold something.

I have one of those with the original drill in it. The drill needs a new power cord to be safe to use. There is a woodworking tool (the name escapes me at the time) where a chisel is mounted in a similar device. It's used to clean up a slot that is rough cut in the wood. Basically the chisel is plunged into the wood, the wood is moved slightly and the chisel is plunged again until the slot is clean.

It's called a hollow chisel mortiser. I don't think this would work for one, but maybe some sort of light press though.

I like that idea.... Put a small metal paddle on it, sharpen the blades and use it in the kitchen to make smoothies and milk shakes

I've actually got one these as well that I inherited from my grandfather... It still has the original drill in it.

I have some spare tools (ya right) that I plan to donate to a local FIRST Robotics team in a needy area. They had tools stolen last year. Maybe there is a local organisation near you that could use this?

x2 on this. I keep one for just this reason though the one I have is 3x the size and fits my Sioux 5/8" drill.

what about a tapping station?
Enco and MSC sell them.
i've used them and if you have a lot of hole to tap, it's faster than chucking the tap in you Bridgeport.

BRILLIANT, those would require a bigger glass, like a super big gulp. You would more than likely only end up having to mix yourself one cocktail. Work smarter, not harder kind of thing.

Valid point and equally useful, but when you are in the garage mixing up a Jack and Marvel Mystery what mixer will look better?

I keep an old drill in one with a 4" wire wheel. Makes removing rust from round things (like bicycle wheels) REALLY easy!

I'm with madmark. I found the same stand at a swap meet for $5 and made a tapping station out of it a couple years ago.
