Between 265 & 485 SQ/FT My 16 x 24 in Michigan

Thanks to photo ucket's changes in it's TOS, I've had to re-host & replace all my pictures in my garage build thread.
I think I have everything fixed that can be.
If you see something that doesn't look correct, please private message me.

It's already completed, but here are some photos of my build that was started towards the end of May this year.
Our Garage was demolished and replaced.
It was built out of used lumber & added on to over the years, and had just plain outlived it's useful life.

Inside at one time there were many pictures pasted on the walls, some from World War 2. There are only a few remaining.

Mission accomplished.

The contractor had already hauled off 1 load.

This is cool! This was a home-made cabinet door that the contractor saved for us. When my wife stripped the old wallpaper from the walls in the house years ago, she found Elmer had signed his name and the date on the bare plaster.

This is what I saw when I got home from work the next day. A dump truck brought another load of fill dirt in after I took the picture.

The contractor told my wife that they should be pouring concrete the day after today.

This is what I came home to after work the following day.

The contractor told my wife that they will start framing tomorrow.

The contractor did a nice job on the concrete.

The old garage was 12' x 22'. New one will be 16' x 24'. It will be nice to have more space.

I had to add this picture.
This is the reason for the garage.
It's a 72 Chevy Vega with a V8.
I've had it since 1979.
This picture was taken right after I got home from the Lane Automotive car show on Saturday of Memorial Day weekend.

Good progress!

The builder will be back on Tuesday to continue framing. With the walls up, I can now get a sense of the size. It will be considerably larger, and taller also.

The builders are fast workers. This is what they got accomplished the next work day.

They would have gotten more done, but my wife said they had to stop around 2:00 pm because it started raining.

This is after I came home from work on Wednesday.
Progress, Progress. Shingles are on, entry door is hung, and most of the soffit and fascia is done.

Thursday: Almost done. Pic taken from the neighbor's yard.

They ran out of fascia material on the last board. They will finish Friday morning.

Minor tasks left to do.
Moving a little fill dirt and final cleanup won't take too long.

This is the money shot. Final inspection in the morning.

After the final inspection we are in the process of moving everything in.

This is for the set of steps we have on order.
I dug it out, made the form, and hand mixed 9 bags of concrete today.
Man that was alot of work!
My body is telling me right now that I should have rented a cement mixer.

My stepson came over today and dug trenching for the new electric that will run to the garage. Thanks Tommy!

More progress. The steps are done. The electrician got started today. He made good progress, including getting the cable ran in the trench so we could cover it up.

The electrician has completed the electrical work.
The outside lights are programmable for dusk to dawn, as well as motion detection.
I'll put up pictures of the inside as soon as I get the inside lights hung.

The fence behind the garage is functional again.
I had to buy a post-hole digger, because the one I lined up to borrow didn't happen.
I found out after I was all done that my neighbor had 1 that I could have borrowed. Oh well.....

The fence on the front of the garage is ...... well it's a fence again.
The grass (and weeds) are starting to grow back.

The gutters / eaves-troughs (or whatever they are called in your area of the country) and the down-spouts are installed.

I had the down-spouts installed to get the rainwater aimed away from the garage towards the neighbor's property behind me.

The garage is at least in a functional state of organization at this point.

When you get older, good lighting is very important.

This is not what I originally had in mind for shelving, but it is functional.

Did I mention that good lighting is important???

Plenty of room for the snow-blower now, without having to stack things on top of it in the summer.

I'm going to purchase a workbench that will go between the window and the walk-in door.

I will probably put in an overhead door opener at some point.

It took a couple of hours to get the overgrown grass removed from the sidewalk.

I set some stepping stones...... Now keep off the grass!

I put up a shelf for my owl to sit on.

I installed another light to hang under the garage door.
It hangs from the roller rails for the door.
It's movable, and doesn't interfere with the door.
The door opener I'm going to install opens the door via the tube for the torsion spring, so the light won't interfere with that.

This is my new work-bench.
It took alot of sanding, then several coats of Linseed Oil, followed by 4 coats of paste wax.
It will almost be a shame to use it as a work-bench.

This is my garage door opener that I installed.
It's a Liftmaster 8500.
It was relatively simple to install, and works nicely.

I put up some decorations over the door.

Here's the tire rack for the summer tires in the winter, and vice versa.

Thank you to my boss for the winch.
It made installing the bed topper on my Sport Trac easy.

The bed topper is hanging, ready to go on the Sport Trac.

Ready for winter.
I can even get the snow blower outside easily when needed.

The "Bring IT" Wednesday night cruises have been VERY popular.
The rumor for 2015 is that they will not happening because of the Main St
bridge replacement.
The logistics of all those cars downtown would be difficult with the bridge closed.

Any plans to install insulation and heat? It gets cold in Michigan if you need a snowblower too.

I have a GREAT wife who has been very supportive thru-out the whole build.

Extra fender is one of "lifes most embarrassing moments".
I've kept it to remind me to "think before I do".
(The fender is damaged because I used to have a tunnel ram intake manifold on the engine, with a different hood on the car with a VERY TALL hood scoop.
As in hard to see what's in front of you on the passenger side.
Short cement post in a parking lot.
Didn't back out of the parking spot I was in very carefully when I was leaving......)

Extra hood is because I seem to have a hood fetish.
I have had the car 35 years, and the current hood on the car is #5.

That is the Vega.
I put it on wheel dollys to move it over enough to get my Sport Trac in the garage.

Any plans to install insulation and heat? It gets cold in Michigan if you need a snowblower too.

I would like to do that in the future.

One idea for the insulation is buy a roll or two whenever you are at your supply place and install it. Then it does not seem like a big cost all at once. And how long does it take to fill a couple of bays with it?

Manual labor. It's good to be young.................

Temporary....the Vega off to the side is only for the winter.
I moved the bench to the back wall.
When spring arrives the Sport Trac will stay outside, and I will move everything back how it was.

I was stationed in the US Army for a short while at Camp Grayling, MI. I visited all over MI, and usually went to Traverse City on weekends. I was there in warm weather, but the post engineer told me the water lines were buried eight feet deep up there. WOW, and that lake freezes over enough to drive a car across. I also toured up into Canada while I was there.
Do you know if that place is still going? It was beautiful country. Also liked the city of Grayling.

It's a small world.

Camp Grayling is still in operation.
I have memories of Grayling also.
The summer before my junior year of high school I worked at a summer camp for kids in Grayling, Camp Au Sable.
When we would get a rare break from all the activity, we would go into town.
Soldiers would always be hanging out at the drive-in we would go to.
Funny it's been so many years, I don't remember the name of the drive-in.

I also worked in Traverse City at a cherry canning factory the next summer.

I actually got this hung and wired 3 or 4 weeks ago, but I am updating my build with the picture.
It's a Fahrenheat FUH54 5,000 watt electric heater.
I still need to add a remote thermostat or switch to it.
I saw another message thread in the Heating and AC section the other day on how to do it, so that will be an upcoming project.
It sure helps to take the chill out when I go out to the garage for a project.
Soon I will have to start insulating the walls.

Thanks for looking in, and the kind words.

The old garage (according to the demolition guy) was still standing only because of the many "bandaid" fixes I had done to to it over the last 20 years.

It cost $1800 to have the old garage demolished and everything hauled away.
It was another $8400 to have the new one built, including the slab.
For our area, I feel like the build price was very reasonable, as we had another contractor come in with a bid of almost double.
