I had both, but the only way I could get real good control of the file is with four fingers holding the handle and my index finger on top of the file itself providing downward pressure...

Back in my Die building days we had a couple machines called Die Filers, ours were heavier then these two I found on the net and the table could be angled. These are what I believe Parker used on their earlier jaws. Remember early Parker jaws are soft. Rick... would have never hand filed his serrations. Great job, I know all the work you did.

Kevin, kind of funny, I had one like the green one, a Hartford I think, sold it to guy from Prac Mac. I currently have one like the gray one, a Harvey Butterfly, although mine doesn't have the belt guard. Not much of a guard guy anyway.

All,
Pardon my amateurism in the vise world but, can anyone tell me if the Dormer Tool company made vises?? I know they make a lot of drill bits and milling accessories but, I haven't connected them to any vise builds? I have a co-worker who swears they do. I figured there's plenty of folks on here who would surely know. Thank You ~ Best of everything in your New Year also!

Killing time on my last day at work before my retirement. This might be the
CL deal of the day if one jaw wasn't missing in action. :(

Get,---As of today, I've been retired for exactly 4 years.---I've always heard that "if you find a job you love, you'll never work a day in your life".---Well after 38 years I finally found mine.---Living the dream.---What's funny, some of the guy's I retired with are sick of retirement and bored to death.---Can't rap my head around that.---Any time I get to thinking that I don't have enough cash to exist on, I just remind myself of all the horse biscuits I had to eat my last 10 years of employment.---Pure political BS, I mean HB.---Got plenty of time, that's not a problem.---Congratulations and I hope you enjoy yours as much as I've enjoyed mine.

And now, to the hunt!

va & oldie,
Looks like you two have been retired for the same amount of time.
Funny, 38 years is how long I have been in the HVAC wholesale business. I can't complain since the last 19 were as an owner. I have put up with a lot BS from customers & a few bad apple employees. Out of 31 people in the company about half have been there between 10 and 15 years. My partner was gracious enough to agree to buy me out. With a lot of time & some dumb luck I am able
to move on to doing what I want, when I want.
(That is if it is OK with my wife )

And a 5198 that is closer and cheaper...:bounce:

And a 6" Reed like Kevin's 106...

To balance my Starrett 925...

Retirement is interesting to say the least...

Tomorrow will be devoted to Alabama's dismantling of Ohio State...

The first one is a 1780, and they can be bought new for less than that...the seller probably thinks the the 1780 is a different version of the 800 series...both 8"'ers...both "Bullets"...gotta be the same, right???...and that one is "Really Rough"...

The 600 is high, but not much higher than I've seen some sell for...

My Parker 805 that's made a few appearances on here already... It had a replacement (I believe to be factory) dynamic jaw on it that stuck up about 1/8" higher than the static jaw. They didn't square up very well, either. This is after many, many hours of grinding, filing, sanding...

Dynamic jaw

Static jaw

Let me tell you, hand checkering with a triangle file ***** rear! My fingers are killing me... There's still about a .010"-.020" gap on the right side when closed, but I can live with that.
Wow, your a good man Charlie Brown. I don't think I have the patience or skill for that. Great work.

I would really like to do that- I'm in Richland and that may be fun to do. Seriously, this is an incredible forum and it really does amaze me on how much knowledge there is here on vises. I appreciate all the info I've got so far. I have a Chas Parker 40-1/2 vise and have a completely new appreciation for this as well as others I see.

We would love some pictures of that Parker 40 1/2. I don't see any mention of it here:

Hey Cretedog, nice die filers. I also have a Keller, forgot all about that one. Wondering if you may have got those files from me a few years back? I had stumbled across a few sets of them years ago, kept 1 for myself, sold the rest thru Practical Machinist.

Yeah, I was told by another member here it was an oldie. I traded a couple overload springs for it awhile back. I couldn't find anything on that site either. Parker vises are kinda hard to research I think. Stay tuned, I will post a couple pictures in a little while of it.

Here's the pictures of the Parker 40-1/2. Sorry about my picture taking ability. I plan on making this a winter project and cleaning it up. The other vise is my Parker 106.

Nice machines Cretedog and 454, you know many here would like their Parker jaws filed with serrations like Rickenbackerman did on his. Your machines are perfect for it. I wish I had one along with a shaper. I sold my set of files on e-bay 3 years ago like those Nicholsons.

A few pages back I asked the members to explain the appeal of vises and why this forum is so vibrant. I've forced myself to answer my own question and to take some time to prepare some pictures of my vises to post.

One reason I am drawn to old vises is that they are a link to the technological past that is quickly disappearing. I grew up in an old industrial town, and there were hundreds of shops large and small when I was growing up. By the time I started my career, technology, politics, and economics were forcing changes in manufacturing at an unprecedented rate. As a young apprentice, I worked with master machinists and toolmakers that did things in a way that can only be found in books these days. Filing, scraping, flaking, and spot finishing were arts as much as skills. My old vises, more than anything else, are a direct connection to those people that did such fine work without CAD, CNC, air conditioned shops, cheap and plentiful imported materials and tools, etc. Every time I use one of the old vises, I try to imagine the people that used it before me, probably before I was born. I have a shop full of neat equipment, but I never forget that I am just the temporary custodian of all of it, and some day someone else will be using it and wondering about me.

Next post, my most precious vise.

June: those are awesome Parker vises and i really like your stand on your 106. did you make that or did it come with the vise?

i used to play golf in Richland at Meadow Springs a couple times every summer before my wife and i had 5 kids and I loved that part of our state.

Wow...I can throw a rock and hit that MSCC from my house. I built the stand for my 106 using a 28" disc blade off a local wheat farm, found the square tubing at a local metal scrap yard for $0.23 a pound. It handles the vise quite well. I like the Parkers too....they're built to work for sure.

June: sounds like i should load up a few of mine and head down your way for a golf lesson. Happy new year and maybe we'll cross paths in person in 2015.

Rockford: I (we) were thinking you were a one and done poster and happy to see you had a better reason for asking us why we like vises and old tools. i can say for me it does remind me of times when the made in USA meant the best in the world. maybe we still have some of that going on in some areas, but you are right that it changed a while ago.

Rick: i can't imagine all the work it would have taken you to get those NOS jaws on your old Parker and to have them shine and look like that. congrats and if you have a before picture of the jaws handy to post that would be great because this thread moves pretty fast and some of us can't recall what your original jaws looked like. are you going to paint your vise now?

drivesitfar If you ever (or anyone else) run across any info as to a date this 40-1/2 was made, I would very much appreciate hearing from you. I was told it's possibly a sheetmetal working vise but, that I couldn't say for sure. As for the golf...well, I have the notorious blacksmith shoulder and my club swinging is very infrequent....but, I do love the 19th hole there !! :)

454 and Mr. Scott-

Files didn't come from PM, but from The Ebay, perhaps even from Mr. Scott?

I've been going to make and cross hatch some jaws on the shaper for a couple of winters now, but haven't gotten there yet. Would be a fun shaper project- maybe this winter. Mr. Scott- do you do yours on a VMC? The ones on the Big Parker are exquisite.

:headscratAny idea what year Prentiss change the shape of the lead screws on these vises ? I have a 92 and a 515 and they both have a bulb type head on the lead screw. I found one on craigslist, a 53 that is different. Here are pictures of all.
