Well, since what I work with is mostly old junk, I guess I've found a new favorite spot.

yeah, this is great!
the old stuff is what brought me to GJ in the 1st place.

i have a feeling this section will be a lot more civilized and just appreaciative of good old stuff.

no drama/argueing/crybabies about HF vrs c-man vrs SO ****

of course i think(hope) that last line really didnt need to be said.

ALL: i just had one of our great MODS move my Vise Repair 101 thread over here so just PM one of them to move over yours if you are the OP. i tried to move over the Plvmb thread, but i wasn't the OP so he will need to PM to do that. PEND sure you 58 grinder thread should be here so PM that and any other old ones you started.

i think the Garage Sale and maybe the Vise thread should be over here so Nines and Moze might think about that.

Vintage is a fine line as they say anything starting fifty years ago is vintage starting in 1965. Now this is the fine part when a tool is no longer made that is the another question to be tackled.

I like this section but having the other tool selection for so long will tend to get confusing, many of my posts dealt with very old tools from the 1920's through the 1960's, but never used the key word "VINTAGE".

I would also like for some of my old stories to be moved to this section as they deal with vintage tools.

Woody: let's make this Vintage section work and try to gradually get all the old tool threads over here eventually so as not to overwhelm our awesome MODS.

Woody: for clarification to those reading our posts you are going to post new "old tool" stories in this section. yes?

that would be awesome and move over the old ones you started that are still in the other section as you can. thanks

I may be the only contrary voice at the moment.

While I kind of like the concept of a section dedicated to Vintage tool discussions, I'm finding the new routine of having to juggle checking 2 sections for the posts I'm interested in just a bit cumbersome.

I was having trouble keeping up with all the post traffic in the regular tool section, now I have to keep an eye on another section of the site as well. It's a bit overwhelming.

I think that I'd rather things had stayed the same. I feel like I'm going to miss something.

Still, I'll give it a chance. :dunno:

This is a cool new sub-forum. I've been into vintage tools for several years. Some may also consider me to be vintage. I am, after all, over 50 years old.

I've considered the same point myself, but for the nicety of having the vintage gear threads readily notable, I think the double tab/window refreshing is something I'll learn to cope with quickly enough. :D

Yes it will be confusing having both sections, but if it cuts out all the HF/snap on troll posts it might just be a fun place to check out some cool old tools.

PS; maybe the speed of the posts will move a little slower which will be really nice!

May I suggest sticky-ing the handful of threads that have >50,000 or 100,000 views (there are about half a dozen).

Also - and maybe this is me being a little OCD - but it would be cool if the thread titles for these threads of greatest interest were a little more standardized. Something along the lines of:

The Vintage Toolboxes Thread
The Vintage Craftsman Block Grinders Thread
The Vintage Vise Repair Guide

(but that's just one man's opinion)

Here are the threads that generate the most interest:

The VINTAGE toolboxes of Garage Journal!
3,586 posts 621,923 views

let's see your craftsman block grinders
3,915 200,491

Vintage Air Compressors
312 141,949

Show us Your Vintage Bench Grinders!!!!
597 53,108

Lets make an all vintage Snap-on tool picture thread!
198 51,338

VISE REPAIR 101 all vise repairs, lubricants, sources for parts and the tricks to fix
789 47,458

So we have the "show your vintage wrench" thread. Lets start a vintage ratchet thread

If they generate the most posts, wouldn't they already be at the top of the page based on post numbers?

Loving this new section.... Wife's not. I agree it can be confusing to some if you go through certain sub categories of the GJ. Although, I mainly go on garage gallery to see new guys starting their projects. I think by having a vintage section will help me personally find the new threads that interest me verses weeding through the new posts off the main page.

My only suggestion is if we could group threads by brand like one for Craftsman tools and one for tool boxes for example. Might help people find a place to post and receive info instead of starting more threads and could consolidate some others about same topic. Not trying to be thread police just helpful suggestion.

Have a good one Gerard

If you want to group threads by brand, use the tagging feature.

Sites that have a ton of different micro-focused sections aren't fun, either.

Well, the top thread for the past two days in the 'tools' section has been about buying TP online, so I'll be glad to leave all the free parking stuff in there behind.....

I havnt used tagging feature so Ill have to try it. I've been on other forums that had by brand and models. One site was all about ford trucks where if looking for info on a Ranger you wouldn't want it grouped with a f250. Granted some grouping would be better than none and agree to much would be bad thing.

I think it's likely best the way it is. End of the day, good quality old gear is good quality old gear. We drool over the gear not the tags. :D Splitting it up may make it cumbersome to navigate, IMHO, whereas with this layout we can appreciate it all without hiking around sections.

27 pages worth of different threads already? How in the world did I miss this new category? Pretty much all my tool restos. belong here. I don't know where to start. One might say I'm a "pre-plastic" tool junkie.

Edit: maybe a mod could move my thread over to this category? I see many threads were moved already.
