Shouldn't we sticky a note that vintage tool discussions have moved?

I usually link directly to the general tool discussion, and was looking for a specific thread to no avail, then discovered a new sub-forum has been created. Just trying to get the word out.

Um, Mods when did this happen? I see a bunch of threads got moved, also...

Not sure I like having to track another page to find threads. it's all tool talk...

I'll probably only look at it when I want to see vintage tools or have a question, it's enough work cruising this and free parking & hot deals on a mobile device anyhow!

Personally, I quite like the idea of a specific forum for vintage equipment threads. Not all of us are into more modern kit, so there'll be a lot less stuff to sift through to get to the threads of most interest.

Easy enough to have an occasional peek in this forum if we need an occasional HF vs. So or Country of Origin thread to recalibrate our reality scales/meters if they're going awry.

I just noticed that too. Was wondering if it had been there awhile and if I had missed it or something?!

Wondered the same when I saw it. :D

I'd rather have seen a "lets ***** about COO or Sears" sub forum... :see:

If the vintage is pulled from this forum, then this forum will become the
" lets ***** about COO or Sears" sub forum...

AMEN! Or how about a Sears and HF sub forum where all sears and HF tools get discussed, and also Sears & HF vs. the competition forum! :p

Gotta say I'm not fond of this idea either.

Like Outlaw said: It's all tools.

With the option to subscribe to your favorite threads, I don't really see the need for it. Half the fun is being able to scroll down the forum list and open threads about tools 50+ years old, and then right below it click on a review of the newest Snappy tool.

Seems like a lot of work might be put on a moderators plate as well as I'm sure many people will inadvertently post new threads in the normal General Tool Discussion forum.

Heck, by having threads like "Show us your vintage bench grinders!" and "Show us your Craftsman Blockhead Grinders!" in the main GTD-forum, we are showing people that these tools are not obsolete just because they are older. If you are a newbie and you are coming here to find input on a bench grinder, you might by-pass the golden oldies because you think it is "vintage" and decide its not worth your time when new (crappy) grinders are being sold everyday.

Apologies if this comes across as a rant. My coherence is out the window due to my work/school/baby screaming schedule.

Mods, I have to admit I agree with what Outlaw is saying here... In fact the thread I was looking for was the infamous block grinder thread and its also the thread that drew me into garage journal. Its nice to know that there is an alternative to going out and spending $25 on a crappy chinese ratchet that you can score a used (read vintage) (or new) 45170 ratchet that will survive a nuclear holocaust and into the next century, or that yes you CAN actually use a PLOMB wrench set as your daily use tools.. Not only that but vintage drill presses and grinders are usually far better quality and cheaper than modern imports as an example. Actually scratch that, everyone should buy a HF drill press until I find a nice vintage drill press for myself (for cheap!)...

I understand though that this forum has grown a lot and makes it easier to moderate and read when things are separated a bit when you have so many new posts coming along at a rapid pace. Many thanks to the people on this forum who make it all happen (Ryan & mods) regardless of our bitchin!

I agree with Outlaw!!

What's the criteria for vintage??

What about repair/restoration advice that spans modern and vintage. Where should these threads be posted? (ex: vises, grinders)

Or what about G-sale/You **** finds? Those generally include new and vintage.

Mods, you guys are going to have a tough time deciding which discussions to move to vintage or from vintage.

Mods, my humble advise is to try vintage for a couple weeks and then put it to a vote. My vote will be to revert back based on what I've seen. The fewer subforums the better. That's why I like it here rather then GG.

ok my turn …

Which VINTAGE? 30's, 40's 50's, 60's, 70's do I need to go on?

This term is as widely misused as antique, rare, barn find.

ok. I'm done bitchin, this morning.

There was only one person that posted in favor of this in the suggestion section, the OP. There has been more votes against the move in this post. Kind of an odd situation.

So if someone is inquiring abut a drill press and we want to mention that there is a vintage Delta forsale close to them on Craigslist, we will need to start a thread on another sub forum and direct them to that thread? It seems like the net result will be a lower number of total postings as folks will not want to follow yet another forum. I do not see much upside to the change.

Maybe you should re-read what I said... Just trying to help sort out the confusion, but never said i preferred it this way. Instead the opposite if you read my latter posts...FWIW.

I am going to go way out on a limb so listen up; I for one am 100% in favor of starting a different section although the idea is not mine to start with.

First off I am tired of all the Snap on rocks HF ***** posts.
HF rocks and Snap-on ***** posts.
Hi I am a superman wild troll and I love to stir the pot.
Hi my name is XXXXX I am not here to sell any tools (just don't look a E-bay for a few days.
What is the best of the best of the best *** that I need to buy forget the price tag.
What drill bit should I buy.
Milwaukee rocks and Dewalt *****.
You guys said brand X rocks and my first brand X ***** what gives.
Craftsman *****
Craftsman rocks.
The posts feed on drama and move at the speed of light so when a good story comes along it is gone in 20 minutes to be taken over for some other wild drama.

I have said my peace I think it will be good to have another section that will move a little slower and not have so much drama; besides if you are not interested in old tools then skip that section.

That is the flip side of the coin and I definitly see your point. I liked the mix myself but i saw in the forum suggestions section that many people had requested a separate section for vintage tools. Ryan finnally relented to the repeated requests and here we are. No matter what happens not everyone is gonna like it. I guess I will accept that and only hope that mods not get too strict on what goes where.

Yes there are too many "*** *****" threads, but I'll gladly skim over those not to miss a tool discussion since I'm interested in both new and "vintage" (however that is defined).

Most sites have too many sub-forums.

After reading and thinking about Woody's post, I'm thinking this may not be a bad idea after all, at least for some of us.

No, you need to send a PM to the member in question...

I'm in agreement with Woody here.

Death Squads should be dispatched to hunt down and exterminate the next imbecile who starts a "What is the best screwdriver/wrench?" thread. Seriously, the General Tool Discussion forum is now so badly degraded with full garbage threads or garbage posts in otherwise good threads that I can hardly stand even skimming the topics any more.

My principal interest is vintage stuff (so it is of benefit to me for that reason alone) but it also will be a much less combative forum as the people interested in such things will tend to be older and wiser. That is, they may actually have some real knowledge. Maybe.

I say keep the new Vintage section.

I am new to this site. I bought an older Huot toolbox and can't figure out how to take the drawers out. Anyone out there done this before?

Maybe you need to reread what I said. The original post asking for a new section for vintage tools was in the "question & suggestion" section.

I don’t think it will be policed like that since there is no definitive definition for the term “Vintage” regarding tools. So far there is nothing in the title / heading to distinguish “Vintage” from anything else. Lol… anyone can claim their tools are “Vintage” just because they want them to be something special other than just used tools. That being said, the ‘Vintage” section will ultimately just become another independent tool forum like we already have.

I think the lines will become extremely blurred; it will result in you, me, or anyone else missing relevant info because they looked in the wrong place.

And once the tools we talk about in threads today get to be a certain age, the thread will need to be moved over to the vintage forum... :lol_hitti

I use a blend of new and old tools so I don't think I'm going to like this.

Also take a thread like Monte's "Tools from the old world". There is a real mix of vintage and new in there. It just seems there is too much overlap in the subject matter of tools to try to differentiate between "vintage tool discussions" and "general tool discussions"

I think it makes more sense to have categories like the same old "General Tool Discussions" and instead of this new Vintage Tools heading, something like "New Tools: Comparisons, Warranty Matters, Coupons, Deals and New Brands"

People are over-thinking this new section. It's a forum aimed directly at older stuff and related matters. Simple gumption will readily enough guide as to what is most appropriate where. It's nice to have a section dedicated to older equipment.

Take Monte's thread. "From the old world" merely states tools from anywhere which isn't a fledgling country, (in current form), so that would translate in theory to tools from everywhere but Australia or the USA. It makes no distinction as to new/old tools though.
