Pittsburg 6"

Pivoting nut for the main screw is new to me...

Got the Pittsburg 6" about finished up. Built up the missing jaw insert with more weld metal, made a new handle, a bit of bondo, paint, and lube...

Anvil vise early 1900's or so. Probably missing a horizontal drill press attachment. Anyone's guess what the MFG is...

Ok I'll play. Grabed this today for $32. Either it's a Bison-bial 1250-100 L or a really good copy.

Those came in four different sizes, from 2" up to 3.5" in 1/2" increments. I sold a 3.5" one on an ebay auction for $48 but the one I sold was in fantastic shape and looked great. I don't know what size jaws are on yours but you could probably get $30 for it. If you look on top of the slide you can see the model number stamped into it. Then you can check eBay current and, most importantly, completed/sold auctions to see what similar vises are actually selling for.

And not Bison, at least not like any one I've seen. The swivel base is different, as well as the Athol-style swivel clamps. But the fit/finish looks European. Definitely a good buy at $32

I acquired this today, Rock Island 597. It's a big boy for sure. I had to load and unload it using an engine hoist.

Now that I have it home it seems like it might be too big. Ha! So, maybe I'll restore it and sell it or restore it and trade my dad for his slightly smaller Reed.

Damn, I was number 2 on that guys list in CO. I was planning to use that one in my shop for a long time if you passed on it. Congrats.

No idea, really. I am not sure how good a "vise" it is in terms of clamping things. It depends on the what the buyer is looking for, as a collector may be attracted to its funky, "steampunk" sort of look. There were a variety of similar combo vises made around that time. They come up on eBay now and then.

Trying to post my first pics on GJ....

I just cleaned up this old Monarch. Too lazy to paint so it got a coat of wax after the wire wheel treatment.

The "interesting" feature is the swivel base that's activated by the big wing nut UNDER the bench.


It was a garage sale find - $10.

wmr, your Monarch almost looks like it was converted to use on that base plate. does it have one or more nubs to engage the plate? Hmm, I don't see any holes in the vise flange... Maybe it's a plate from a different vise?

I paid $5 for it. Its a model #761 with a 1,1/2" jaw

Yep the sizes started at 1-1/2" not 2"

in 1927, 74X were "plain iron jaws" 76X were "hardened steel jaws" and 77X had a swivel base, (bottom wingnut on a stud) with "hardened steel jaws"

But these went through many minor iterations over the decades...

Oh, right. 1.5' to 3" were the four different sizes, my bad. The one I sold was the 3" version. Here's a complete set, cool photo. They are well made vises in my opinion, just a limited market.

Setting beside it is a 150lbs. anvil that I got a couple weeks ago. It's my next project. It has writing on it, but can't make out the name yet.

I was way off on my guess on the weight of this vise. I weighed it tonight. I used a Hanson 200lbs. hanging scale and the weight indicator marker went an 1-1/2 past the 200lbs. mark.

There are subtle differences, such as the angle at the back of the slide and (like I noted) the bottom portion that rides on the swivel base. On the Bison vises, the bottom is thinner and has material scalloped away on the underside presumably to reduce the contact patches to the base.
And regarding those swivel style clamps, they look just like those on many Asian vises In any case, for the price you got a nice vise.

I am very envious of your Monarch vise its a great looking tool. I have been looking for a good combination vise for my welding table project.

If you are using the tapatalk app you can add additional pictures by just clicking the picture or camera icon again and selecting or taking another picture.

It could be just an older design. There are lots of differences, but you can see a lot of similarities also.

My rescues today from a dairy farm in Iowa. he was asking 375.00 but I got him down to 220.00. A parker 205, rusty but very clean . No hammer marks or welding. A rocky 93. It was his main vise. Lots of welding splatter on top but clean other wise. The odd one , well, It's ruff and missing the drill handle and another piece that is for drilling and the hardy tool. The only markings I have found on it is "1601 Illinois" on one side and "50" on the other.

That's what I'd guess too. If it is an Asian import, it's not the usual type of cheesy affair, with flagrant oversizing on things like the anvil portion, or apparent rough finish.

Here's my 623 with fresh paint.
I still can't stand the fancy handle on it but the jaw profile is so good for filing that I think I'll just use this vise for small stuff and even get new jaws for it.

That Athol turned out nice, looks great. I'm not a fan of those handles either, definitely takes some getting used to. There's a big one up for sale locally, overpriced at $400 imho.

I have a Large Anthol vise for sale. The jaws are 5.5 inches wide and the vise is a total of around 22 inches in length. This has been my main bench vise until I started moving some things around in my shop.

Thank you. I notice the one you posted has had the handle welded on like mine.
I wonder if that happened a lot.
Either way it's a beauty , and pre 'machine & foundry' too.

This is the Bison that I inherited from my Father. I believe he bought it at an auction in the early 70s. My guess is that the vise was made in the 50s or 60s. Recently I tried to get a swivel base for it because Bison can sell them as an accessory. However, this one was too old old to find a base that matched. So, as a future project, I plan to machine one from a flange blank.

BTW: He painted it with the same latex paint that he had left over from painting some rooms in the early 70s

The quality of Polish tooling is second to none.

Picked up this coachmakers vise today. Has no name on it but it probably tips the scale around 50 lbs. Slide is a little beat up but I only paid $25. I am assuming this is another no name prentiss made vise?

Balane & ALL: take a close look at that 5.5 inch wide jaw Athol. the handle doesn't slide through a hole like most handles. interesting modification i'm not sure i'd like.

Yeah knowing my luck, everything I tighten would end up with the handle vertical up.

Has any company ever made a bench vise with a hex? Like how a Milling machine vise works. Sometimes the handle ends up where it is in the way.
