Blue Point has been rebranding products for over 30 years.
Nice made in the USA pick-up tool.

I used one of those to retrieve a baby rattle snake from out behind the neighbor's washing machine one day. I had to cut two of the claws off so I could make it a two claw retriever to go around the snake's tail. :)

I think it would make more sense to name Snap On, Matco and Mac tools that are rebranded (made by other companies).

We've done this before recently. Search past threads.

Another technique is to look at the tool ads in automotive trade magazines to see who the real manufacturer of a particular item is. For example, Ullman devices makes most of the extendable mirrors and magnetic pick up tools sold on the tool trucks.

Yes Fedwrench the re-brand information is out there if you know how to find it. A lot can be learned just by reading certain GJ members posts. BTW are you near the Nissan test complex out there?

That would be easy for Matco, its every item they sell except tool boxes.

It wasn't a Blue-Point ... it came off the 99 cent sales table. :D

I don't mean removing the claws, I just meant using it to pick up a snake. That's some weird ish. That's a creative use of a tool. I'm guessing it was already dead

No, the snake was still alive. I picked the snake up and put him in a coffee can with air holes poked in the lid. Then I put him in the trunk of the car and drove out to a large open field. A short time after that, I loosened the lid of the can and threw the can up in the air. If you can picture a snake coming out of a coffee can while tumbling in the sky, that's what happened. :D

I don't recall the thread, sorry :) But perhaps there's a difference in that I don't mind that these tools were rebranded, nor do I mind the cost:). I've got a handful of them to post when I can.

edit: I just read through that other thread I think you're referring to. The intention of this thread was more like a "I bought such and such a re-branded tool and like it" :) In the case of the of the tool I posted, Sears was too far away, Proto was on sale at MSC for $6.50 + shipping, but I'd have had to wait until Tuesday to get it. I could've gotten something from McMaster, I guess. But that would've been pricey too. So the $9.00 for the BP was pretty good. And I didn't have to drive anywhere. :) And I'm willing to bet it's as well made as the Proto.

I loved those over-priced rebranded tools! With a 40% Snappy and 50% Mac discount, I got most of my favourite tools and best deals this way. I got great deals on Knipex (pliers), Grip-on (locking pliers), Kastar(ratcheting screwdrivers etc) , Irwin (extractors etc), Stride(Snap-ring pliers), ES (multimeters), Mayhew (punches etc), Ullman (mirrors/magnets) IR (2135ti:D, impacts etc). In fact it was my preference for the (mostly) Eurpoean rebadged stuff that started my tool collecting tendencies.

Apprentice/student techs, take notice!!

If you do a lot of research and have the cash, you really should make the most of those discounts while you have them.

I look at buying premium tools like this:

You can use your own numbers, but for my reasoning, I think Snap-on (Insert alternate premium brand here) tools give a 20% performance increase over the cheaper option for a 100% increase in cost. Now obviously, the math states that whenever we do not need the extra 20% performance, we should buy the lesser unit. However if you need the extra 20% performance, whether to finish a job or finish a collection, you will have to buy the more expensive one.

Everyone's perceived price/performance numbers will change, but I think we can all agree on the law of diminishing returns:). Anyway, point is, throwing in a 50% discount changes those sums considerably. Enjoy it while you can.

Private label tools have been around forever just like private labeled food, clothing, etc.

The difference with tools is the price goes UP with a private label...

The Blue Point wrench holders are rebadged Wrench Rack I think. Snap-on was the only place I could find the reverse arrangement, though, so I shelled out $7. My toolbox space is worth more than that to me.

I bet he was pissed off, I know I would be too if I was picked up by a claw drenched in red permatex lube

Matco used to sell the same set (in blue) for around $45-50,it's no longer listed in their online catalog but the two leftt-most blue tools sell for $22.50 EACH :shocking:

The Astro and Actron are the same exact tools,I bought the Matco set several years ago and recently picked up the Astro and Actron versions for less than $20 a set.

How does someone "loosen the lid of the can" exactly?

( Running, ducking, grinning.... )

Pick Up Tool, Magnetic, Telescoping, Lifts 16 lbs. Blue-Point:

This last one will save me from having to jump into the metal recycling bin to pick up pieces of steel that I want to reuse. I'll keep you guys posted on whether it actually picks up 16 lbs. or not.

Good job Merkava, just because a critter makes a wrong turn doesn't always mean it has to die.

This is true for snakes, furry critters, birds, neighbors' kids, etc, but anything with 8 legs that makes that wrong turn gets a size 13 ****** to the next life!:shocking:

Back on topic, I'm loving this thread! Lots of good info!
