XJ: it looks like you have a great vise with a little character. congrats on your purchase of a bit of old not so common US history.

here's my 70+ year old read i bought from a 95 year old machinist and i doubt he used it much since he bought it new. this might be the color that Carla mentioned, but i think i might like this greenish one better that Carla restored because of how the color pops with the way she shined up the raw steel.

your vise your color is always my theory. i'll probably put a boiled linseed oil (BLO) on a lot of my vises because i do like the naked not too shiny steel.

here's a few pictures of each.

Incase any of you are interested. Here is a few shots of my restoration. I'm trying to keep it's used history intact, wile also restoring it to a good looking and working part of the shop.

Should Do a build thread? Or just do it all here?

XJ: you can post up a few before pictures on the vise repair 101 thread and reserve the next post or two for the after pictures and process which would be great for the next guy restoring a swivel jaw vise. then if you have any questions just ask in that thread on the last post to get some help if you might need some. it's looking good so far as you take apart your new Reed.

Just a quick update. Got it all snad blasted, welds ground, and painted.couldn't find the color I wanted so i did the sageish color. Just need to take the handles in to get a black oxide treatment. I'll post the full resto in the vise tread when it's all done.

XJ, generally any sliding contact surfaces like the slide, and the contact surfaces for the sliding jaw are left bare iron. Jaw faces as well. Sometimes paint on the slide makes it so the slide is too tight to slide.

Other than that looks good!

Haha, yeah. I didn't intend to paint the sliding surfaces but after the glass blasting I had to cover real quick to prevent it from rusting since it will be about a week before I can take the other parts to get black oxide. That will be all cleaned up! And thank you sir!
