Comfort Zone CZ220 Heater

was pondering a way to more efficiently heat my 600sq ft garage so that i could do a little work out there. To darn cold here, been in the teens !! plus snow on the ground as well. Sorry, I am NOT good at dealing with the COLD.

read a few post on here about vairous heaters and methods. I have a Mr Heater 35-55k adj Torpedo heater, and that thing heats the garage up pretty quick. Only thing is it is LOUD and puts out Co2 & HUmidity in the air.

I spend most of my time in the garage working on restoring my 1929 Chevrolet. Also looking for something to keep the temps above freezing at all times.

Found this post Great price for a garage heater by pablo94sc and sparked my interest. It is a Comfot Zone CZ 220 it iss a 220v heater, adjustable thermostat, variable output, 3k, 4k, 5k as well as it can be ceiling mounted out of the way. Other perks are safety features for overheating, etc...

Broke down and ordered one on Friday !!

Just got notification that it was Shipped today (Monday) and is on its way.

Will post up picts when it comes in and wiring it up and mounting it.

Plan on mounting it up in the front corner, as it is close to the sub panel for wiring, as well as out of the way of traffic & walking around, also can project out over the shop easier from that angle.

I have 2 CZ220's sitting next to me waiting to be installed in my 24x32. I am not really ready for them since I have not added a sub-panel yet but I couldn't pass up the sale. Let us know how you like it.

Got heater in last night, Surprised UPS delivered it in the Snow we are having... Going to unpack it and get it up this weekend, I hope. May not get it wired up but it should be installed...

Take the front panel off and tighten the nut holding the fan blade on. It's loose from the factory and will cause the unit to vibrate like mad.

I put a long 10g wire cord on one of these and plug it into my welder outlet as a portable heater. The mounting bracket works as a carrying handle. Only downside is that the cord cost nearly as much as the heater.

Was really hoping to get my New Heater installed and running this weekend to warm up the garage. since we were in the upper 20's most all weekend, would have been NICE :!
I went out to unpack and install my Heater... Unfortunately Found Out it was Damaged !!

Looks like it was dropped pretty hard on one corner. So took some picts and sent an email to them Saturday Afternoon. They called me back today and have to say customer service was very nice and asked NO questions, other than did i want a replacement or just to return it !! I asked for a replacement so they are sending me another one, as well as sending UPS Label so I can send this one back.

So will pack it back up, print and stick the label on the box and drop it off at UPS Store.

Just looking at it Have to say it looks well built, and sturdy... Hence it had to be dropped pretty hard to do this damage. Hoping to get breaker installed and wire ran this week, so when the replacement arrives I can just install and hook it up. I will also put a 3/8" lag bolt and washers for the install. Plan to install so that I can rotate/ spin the unit, as I will mount it in the front corner of my garage by the man door.

Luckily a friend had some extra 10/3 he had left over from his garage build that was laying around so he brought it in and told me to use what i need, hopefully it will be enough to run from the panel to the heater location. Will just tie off the extra leg in the 10/3 since Heater only needs 10/2.

Like the Plug Idea, makes it Truly Portable !!

I ordered one from L&M Supply on Sat., I am thinking I will wire it with a plug. I have one that rarely gets used for my stick welder, 30 amp.

Well heater delayed until monday due to SEVERE Weather !!

So went out and ran the wire, installed the breaker, and drilled hole for mounting.

10/3 Wire & 30 AMP Breaker

I am going to install the Heater using the Center Hole so that I can rotate/ Swivel the Heater IF Needed. Other Option they offer is two holes spread out in bracket to SOLID mount.

Now waiting for the heater, rescheduled for MONDAY !! that should be a quick job... so I hope

lol, same here, we almost hit 70 yesterday, and supposed to be 55-65 all week !!

Hoping to get it installed here this week or weekend if time permits... Granted it is Supposed to be in the 60' all week, so really do not need it for HEAT. but will fire it up and test it out anyways !!

Also per others Recommendation and Comments, I removed the cover and tightened up the Nut on the Fan.

Well took a few minutes and went out and installed the Heater. Since all the leg work was done, was a quick task. Under 30 minutes. Taking my time.

Have to say it looks great in the corner. Granted it was 70 deg out, I fired it up and let it run to make sure it worked. on setting I (3000 W) I let it run, and using my Laser Thermo coil heat was around 200 deg F. switched over to setting III (5000 W) and coil heat was around 300 deg F. That little fan easily pushes the air out and around. do not want to stand in front of it tool long, may melt ya !!

If we get a cold day I will go out and fire it up to test its ability to warm up the garage !!

Happy and content with it so far... all in for under $150 I am happy

I got mine up over the weekend, works good. I kinda wish it had a stronger fan though. Also, I just got 2" of wet snow, supposed to be 50s tomorrow, 60s Wed.-Thurs.

mine worked great, never an issue
set the fan speed and thermostat where i wanted it to maintain, and then turned it up when i went out there. the fan is NOT powerful but worked great in my 600sq ft area

Does yours have a fan speed option. I thought there was only 1 knob or does it control both?

I think this will work, and i plan on working on it some this weekend. I am not 100% that the contactor will work using the W wire for heat call.

I believe the fan on this model does not run after the element kicks off.

The reason i put this after everything was so you could still see that the unit had power. after thinking about it some more. you could put it between incoming line and the L1/L2 contacts and you would get the same thing and unit would kick on with heat call. Would have to have the transformer before the contactor so the thermostat always had power.

I also think the honeywell Aube 120/24 control transformer would work in this setting as well but i believe a dedicated 120v circuit would be needed somewhere (either inside the unit or nearest where the thermostat is.

If anyone has any criticism on this wiring, please feel free to beat me up.

Got the Comfort Zone 5000 watt heater for Christmas. I knew my kids were getting it for me since I told them what I wanted. I ran 10/2 (orange) wire inside the wall to my panel and connected it to a 220 30 amp breaker. I bought a 6' whip wire to go from the junction box I installed on the ceiling to the heater. It is hardwired so I just use the breaker when I want to turn it on. My garage is 20'X25' with 10' ceiling and 3 walls have no insulation. The bracket to hang the heater seemed a little flimsy to me so I used 3 bolts to secure it to the ceiling.
Yesterday it was 32 degrees outside and within 1 1/2 hrs it was 55 degrees in the garage. That's plenty for me so that's where I set the thermostat. Well worth the $89.

My detached garage is 26x36 W/10' 2x6 walls, cathedral ceiling & heavily insulated. Currently using an LP tanktop 30k radiant and easily heats it from 28° to 40° in an hr or so, Its connected to a 15' hose inside keeping it movable to where I'm working & plumbed to 100# tank outside. I use a small 6" fan to move the air around.
I stopped using my ceiling mount LP Reznor that has a standing pilot, I'm considering changing it to a hot surface ignition n not wasting the gas when I'm not using it.

I've just installed mine and I don't run it that much. Shouldn't see much difference. Maybe someone that has had theirs longer can chime in about their bill.

This wiring does work. The W1 and w2 wires only put out 8v when heat is off and 28v when heat is on. You can select either in the ecobee settings. Ecobee thought it was a boiler set up since I only had the Rc and c wire hooked up.
C does not go to ground, it must be to common back to the transformer. I also used a different contactor than the picture, I ordered the one listed but I was sent a dc coil version and it was much taller and wouldn’t fit, and it was dc.
So the ecobee wires are Rc (rh would not power it), C (24v common), and w1 or w2 (heat call).

After digging into this, I believe you could isolate the fan wires to their own contactor and have the ecobee control that contactor if you wanted to run the fan only, as well as, have it run for a few minutes after the heat call is off.

I still have to run the wiring and mount this thing. I currently have it wired into the panel with the whip hose I am going to be using and my thermostat just using really short wires. I hope to do this tomorrow. I’ll take pictures.

I think another thing that could be done is separate the 3k/4k/5k switch into two separate switches/relays (maybe a spdt) and have the emergency heat call from thermostat trigger the second stage ( I know some thermostats won’t run stage 1 and aux/emerg at the same time but the ecobee can be configured to run both simultaneously as well kick in the Aux if the temp delta is larger than a set value.

Update on my Comfort Zone 5000 watt heater. I have been using it off and on now for a couple weeks. The heater works fine and gets my garage up to 50 degrees in about an hour are so with it being 32 degrees outside. Not bad since my ceiling and 3 of the walls have no insulation. The thermostat on this unit is the problem. When you have it running and set the thermostat at 50 degrees it seems to work ok. When I fire it up the next morning or a couple days later it runs and the temperature will go above 55 degrees or higher. For me it's not a big issue since I'm in the garage working and when I get hot I turn it down and when I'm on my pc I turn it back up so I'm playing with it all the time. Still a good unit and well worth the money.

I just picked mine up. The way I have figured cost was multiplying the 5000W maximum by my kWh rate on the electric bill times how many hours a day I expect to use it. In my case it is 5,000X0.09278(my rate from the last bill)=46.39 cents per hour on high or about $1.85/day running 4 hours on high. I picked 4 hours because I seriously doubt I will keep it running very hard once I get the temp up in the morning. On a 30 day billing cycle and anticipating using it 25 of those days, I am looking at about $50 for being comfortable.
