Dragged charger, supplies and tools into the house and replaced alligator clips in the comfort of the warm kitchen. Took the Outlander to the dealer to get 2 new keys programmed so I can go out for a ride tomorrow.

Moved the workbench down to the corner, mounted the lights under the wall cabinets, mounted the TV mount (waiting on VESA adapter), and put up the dry-erase board.

Pulled out my old school Mac 110 mini chain saw that I prepped for short-term storage in 1997. It was in it's original plastic carry case with a dry fuel tank, small amount of chain oil in the reservoir, and wrapped with an oil cloth and plastic.

After going through the saw and checking the spark plug, I filled it with fresh fuel, chain oil and with the assist of a little shot of starting fluid it started up. Made some test cuts on a tree we are removing. Tomorrow it gets its first real use in a long time. Nothing like old school quality tools!!

More clean up and straighten up. Had some friends over for dinner and one of my buds helped me check out some electric motors (he's a retired AGE mechanic). So I had 5 electric motors sitting there. One is DEAD, One is LIVE, two need to be cleaned real well and will probably function after that and the last one we didn't check (220 VAC).

Welded an allen key in the front diff sump plug of my Toyota. Struggled the whole of yesterday morning to get it out until it stripped. I guess the heat of welding + a proper fit on the allen key helped to get it out at last!

I'm in the process of rebuilding my RS headlight assembly, including upgrading the wiring and installing halogen lights. While waiting on parts (every part is available for this car, but you just can't pop on down to Autozone to get it) I'm doing two small related projects.

I write our club newsletter so I thought all these would be good projects to share...

Was far away from home today, driving down the highway and noticed the battery voltage was low, got scared I was going to shut down on the highway, floored it to partsource and got an alternator (knew it was on its way out). Voltage was holding at around 11-11.5V until I got home.

oil change on mom's car, alternator swap on mine

Replace/Repaired 2 sprinklers and put on a new mailbox. I'm supposed to be doing annual reviews but I so hate the bureaucracy and the paperwork that goes with it.

These were the highlight of the month for both the customer and me -- 42.15 hours (woo hoo, what a payday!!!) and he's jazzed with the results. The front clip behind it is the same guy's other grille still to restore -- he's got five cars -- but it provides a good comparison from then and now. (Still trying to figure out the new phone; hopefully these pics aren't a half inch wide lol)

AC Condenser Replacement in Hyundai Sonata

2012 Hyundai Sonata 2.0T with poor performing AC. I brought it into the dealership and they tell me it is empty of refrigerant. They want $790 to replace the condenser. Get it back and the AC no longer works. I charged it with nitrogen and see it is leaking out the condenser. The dealership claims the condenser must have been damage by road debris. I bought a replacement condenser for $65, 30-lb of R134a refrigerant for $120, and some PAG oil.

Front bumper removal

Front bumper

Damaged Condenser

Rock damage, yeah right. Looks like screwdriver induced damage to me.

Removing Condenser

Removing Compressor

Compressor out

Flush kit:

Evacuating the system

Manifold gauge setup

Vacuum system down to 64 microns. Held for 30-mins with a rise to 74 micron

I am so glad I got the engine leveler as other wise this job really would have been a bit of a pain. Battery impact driver made short work of the adjustments.

Now just to fit the new gear box and return it all.

Had the electrian over. Orginally it was to add a 220 and some lighting to the garage. Turned into rewiring half my house because 2 general light circuits were overloaded. 15amp breakers showing 19amps. Come to find out EVERY outlet and light was on 1 15amp circuit. That included the garage door opener.
Nice unexpected $400 out of my pocket and 5 hours of work.

Local lumber yard / building supply delivered another load of sheetrock and insulation for the upstairs of my garage. The young feller driving the truck thanked me for helping him carry the stuff upstairs, said that lots of times nobody helps him. Couldn't believe it, told him that it was me that appreciated the help.

Because I have an account with them, not only do I get a contractor discount, I get free delivery for orders of $275 or more and help getting materials upstairs or wherever I want it placed. Can't beat small town customer service.

My garage is such a mess after I sold my 10ft long workbench and tool chest. After sourcing new storage cabinets and work bench, I finally assembled my workbench. Also got my small Lista cabinet on casters.

I modified the Edsal 30" wide legs to properly accept the Footmaster GD40S adjustable casters. The workbench is 37.5" tall now and should be very versatile.

Still a lot of work to clean up the mess to park an additional car in there; it's a two-car garage.

That is DEFINITELY not from road debris. For future reference, whenever possible CHECK REPAIRS FROM ANY SHOP BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE PARKING LOT!

If you had tested the AC while sitting in their parking lot it would have been very difficult for them to claim road debris damage. Take it to them and ask them if they want to refund your money. If not, out the dealer, the service writer and if you can get the name of the mechanic on social media, this and any automotive forums you frequent.

If nothing else, maybe it will save another customer from their shoddy "service".

Sorry, I see this too many times in my own shop when we have to fix someone else's crappy work and it kills me to have to charge the customer because to fix the incompetent repair attempt usually costs more than the original service.

With the power of the internet, yelp and crowd sourcing, we finally have the tools to fight back against these thieves.
