I'd love to see some more info on those sockets for removing damaged allens (#1047). Never seen those before, how exactly do they work? Looking through the pics I'm not sure I follow. I see that the tip rotates, but how does that grab better?

Anyone here have experience with these? Do they work? Obviously if they work then a tool like this can be a real time saver on those rare bolts that come into the shop already stripped. I was only able to find one review on them anywhere and it was very bad.

Thanks!

I appreciate the link to the video, that's the kind of thing I was hoping for. My issue is that the video shows you removing a bolt that is so loose you're holding it by hand to remove it. I'd like to see a test where a bolt gets torqued into place and then removed, something to show the kind of force these sockets can handle and exert. I noticed that in the comments of that video someone asked a year ago what torque they could handle. Astro replied saying they would get an answer but never posted it if they did.

You have to forgive my skepticism of a tool that boasts to do what this does but has no specs and only comes with a 90 day warranty. Just so I'm clear, I've always been happy with the quality of Astro stuff I've bought, but this one I'm just not sure of the long-term durability OR how well they actually work for anything besides hand-tight bolts.

Thanks for taking the time, you're always great at responding quickly. Great service!

Is the battery on the regulator only good for two years? Or does that assume the 5000 uses over its lifetime mentioned in the product description? Asking because I won't use it more than 100 or so times in two years..

Mr. ***,

I bought some several months ago and have used them many times and they work excellent. So much so I bought an extra set of both. There is a down side and that is make sure you seat the bit 100% before you turn it at all or you're not going to like it. I've had a couple of the "cam" grabby thingy's hang up not following my own advice and did not have a easy time getting them to re-align in the bit. But all in all I'd suggest this tool for anyone as it does work extremely well.

Hey larryq,
It is referring to the 5000 uses over its lifetime mentioned in the product description.

Glad to hear it LX.

And as for max torque, as you can imagine with a non damaged or minimally damaged hex bolt it's quite a lot higher than a bolt that's been damaged in some unique way or has become completely round on the inside - and that's before comparing stainless vs other alloy SHCS.

A.P. put their name on a really nice set of picks or dental tools or whatever you want to call them. I found them at Northern Tool on clearance a few weeks ago and wish I had picked up another set or two. They're quite nice!

Thanks very much for the reply and the info, this is what I was hoping to hear.

When I asked about torque, I meant how much torque could the sockets handle. I realize that you can't figure torque of an unknown fastener. Part of my concern is how much it can handle before that little twisty tip snaps off or something similar. Of course I also realize that proper use would not twist just that tip, but then we're talking about a hollow allen shaft, etc.
I'm not trying to derail your thread, I just know I USE my tools so I'm always concerned about quality and lifespan of anything with a 90 day warranty.

Thanks again for your time and answers. :)

I'm a little leery of Astro Pneumatic stuff. I bought the 5-piece pliers set and 3-piece locking universal joint for socket extensions that Woot was selling last year. The pliers set was disappointing; very "made in China." Lots of rough, unfinished surfaces and sharp edges, a few scratches & chips, and they were all lubed/coated with that stinky Chinese machine oil. They don't seem much better than HF, really. I mean, they work, but they're not nearly as nice as the pictures indicated. The universal joints, however, are pretty great! Smooth chrome, nice machining, they looked and felt much better. Lo and behold, that set was made in Taiwan. So your mileage may vary with COO.

FWIW, though, someone in a Woot thread mentioned that their air tool stuff is pretty good. :dunno:

Picked up the socket set to remove damaged allens. I know I've spend a good chunk of my life cursing at stripped allen heads so hopefully this makes it easy!

Hey Tuscani2718,
You can purchase replacement parts/tips directly through Astro. Just call our 800 # and we will be more than happy to help!

While true, I was told that it was cheaper to buy a new gun and I was directed to numerous websites where I can purchase the tips for $36-46. I agree that it's cheaper to buy a new gun, but I wanted a 1.8-1.9 tip, which appears to be made from unobtanium.

I'm not badmouthing, I'm just sharing my experience for the journal. If you want a 1.3 or 1.5, this is a great deal. If you need anything else, you're better off purchasing that.

I received the gun and it has a great feeling in the hand, good balance, and smooth castings.

Got my damaged allen sockets in today. I hope to have time to screw around with them a bit and see what I really think of them.

For the record, I stated they had a 90 day warranty above and it's actually 1 year. I'm not sure where I got that from, I know I didn't pull that out of thin air so I must have read it somewhere I saw the product listed for sale is my guess.

First impressions are nice case, nice build quality, but use is what matters so we'll see. I'll also add as constructive criticism - whatever process is used to etch the labels on the sockets should be bigger and darker so it reads more clearly. This picture was taken 6" away from the sockets and, truthfully, makes them look clearer than they do in person. The etching is actually somewhat blurry on the edges making this worse, it's odd that it's not showing that well in the picture. Sorry for the big pic size, but I wanted it to be really visible.
I'd also say that the size should be etched larger than the Astro part#, not the other way around. The size is more important to the end user than your internal part#.

Again, just my $.02 nothing more.

When I get some time to put them through their paces I'll post back with the results that matter most.

Thanks for the promotion.
