Traffic is insane driving home from work so I took the backroads and stopped at a habitat restore.

Look at the nice little craftsman vise mounted on a workbench with a craftsman planer. The manager is off so the staff wouldn't let me buy just the vise. They only want $100 for it all but i don't need it, and not looking to try to flip it. I have to wait until Tuesday to see if they will sell just the vise, if it doesn't sell tomorrow. Also a nice craftsman bandsaw for $80 but I don't need it. I'm guessing it's from the 1950s?

I admire your restraint. If those were in the thrift stores that I frequent, they would end up in my shop.

Personally I'd pass unless they are willing to sell the vise at ~1/4 of that or less. BTW that is a scroll saw or stationary jig saw, not a band saw.

Re: Friday Vise pictures from the collection

OK, here are some pictures.

David

Looks like you need some GJ members to take some of those off your hands so you can get organized. Is that a Parker 22 with the horn on the back? I'll take that one.

Nice collection

Yes scroll saw is what I meant. No I would only take that vise if I could get it for $20 max.

Did Columbian make a decent machine vise? This is a 5" model, No. 1525, that I picked up this morning. I don't know much about them to be perfectly honest. It opens to 6" and everything seems to be in decent condition. I'm leaving this one alone, doesn't need any appearance work in my opinion.

O, that looks nice. Not swiss cheesed either. What does the bottom look like? Does it have any spot for keys?

lol, I don't even know what "keys" are. Here's a bottom shot if that helps.

It's 18" long and the weight is just a hair under 30 pounds. These are decent?

The slots milled in the underside would let you fit keys that'll line it up in the T-slots on a mill table

Hey we need more pictures of the Acme Tool Co vise in the first picture!

And I would appreciate pictures of any Wilton bullets, C -series or Cadets that have a date stamped on the keyway for the database.

Here's a Cadet stamped 1961 if that helps any. All of the handles have been replaced so those are not original but the vise was manufactured in '61.

Edit: 3 1/2" Jaws, 18 Lbs.

I'll see if I have any other Cadet photos.

Hey Balane, I would appreciate if you can give me the whole date and not just the year or that Cadet and that 1965 vise. Also if it has GUAR EXP on the slide by the date. And gorgeous work as always. if you were close I would just let you restore my vises!

It's gone so I can't take a look to double check, sorry. I always list the complete date if available and all I have on this one is 1961 so I suspect it either wasn't there or it wasn't legible. There was no EXP on this one, I do know that for certain.

The 9400 is stamped 6-30-65 and no EXP marking is present.

Thanks for the compliment too. :)

Thanks Balane added the dates to the database. Almost 160 pre-1970 bullets, Cadets and C-series on there so far.

We've got one that goes SIDEWAYS!!!:eyecrazy:

That's not the first one like that that has surfaced, but even that one may tax Get to find!

I am an avid reader of the posts here on GJ "VISES"
Just wondering how many of us vise junkies are in the ownership club of 50+ vises in our possession.
David

David- Did my wife put you up to a loaded question like this?? Several years ago I had around 200 real vises not counting clamps. Now I would have to guess well over 300 counting post vises and other unusual blacksmith vises. I figure I average a vise a week which seems to be in line with other vise addicts I see on here(you know who you are). The big vises( 8 inch) average about one every 3 months however I only got 1 all last year but have acquired 3 so far this year so it goes in spurts.
I am going to start a Viseanon support group for you people that need help! For others no hope, there are just some people you just can't reach!

I'm new to this forum, so I might need a little advice on how to correspond. I have a Reed 202 1/2 that I'm restoring. It has a swivel base that doesn't look original, but works very well. Does anyone recognize this?

Wed: WOW that is a nice stack of vises. does look like yours are not only some quality vises, but also in reasonably good condition. it's was pretty hard to see what all you had, but i did see a few gems. Is your Craftsman 519x vise a 5198? how many baby Wilton bullets do you own?

thanks for sharing

ALL: I have no idea how many vises i own, but i do know I don't own a real blacksmith knee or leg vise yet. or an 8 inch wide jaw 250 plus pounder.

some of my vises have found their way to other GJ member's benches and a couple to non members that just needed a good vise, but as stated when they left it was like losing a pet or family member.

Bagged: if its not broken, welded or cracked i'd get off the computer and go pick it up if it was me. and i don't need another Wilton bullet.

good luck

The guy also has this Parker 134 too but it looks the picture looks like the jaws might be welded

I might have to repaint this one. I tried my hand at air brushing to accent the polished lettering. A buddy bought this for me at a sale I couldn't get to. He paid 50 for it. I thought it was a bit much but it might be alright after all. ...If I can get the paint right.

As is the slide/dynamic jaw. I'd check the Wilton over VERY carefully before handing over the cash.

Yes. Welded all over

This person selling these was hired by a former dealership's owners to liquidate all the equipment left in the building. It shut down recently. I asked him what his position at the dealership was when he told me the vise was sitting at a Ford dealership's showroom. I was hoping it was an open dealership, as it could have been a good sales lead for my job.

Does it have to be mobile? If not I'd weld it to a ~3/8" thick piece of plate and lag that to the floor. Otherwise you are going to need quite a bit of weight down low to or off set to make sure that is stable. What model is that again?

If I recall, the ad said it was 6" jaws? Your pictures are at an odd angle, but is it an older combination vise (pre"C" Series)? If yes to the previous 2 questions, it could be a Reed 34. Your 2nd pic, shows the opposite side of the side that has the Reed writing, and it looks like it could be a 2 digit number, maybe 34?

littleponderosa,
That is a nice adjustable mount you found. Very handy.
David

In order - no it does not have to be mobile. Unfortunately my shop is also the garage and at this point giving up permanent floor space just doesn't work out. Could or possibly will go on the welding table.
Thanks zkling for the heads up.

This is a Reed 34. Good eyes with a poor photo. No pipe jaws - is this normal? I evidently need to do some research. Thanks for the assist FMC1959.

It is a good mount, but I'm struggling how to make it play well with my set-up. Now that I have 3 leg vises, I'm getting a little concerned about room. Call it Catch-22 for the garage and I'm Yossarian. Found 3 vises and I'm happy, but how happy can I be if I can't use them.

Thanks guys for all the input. I'm sure I'll be asking for more info.

LP: some of the stands in this thread won't work for your Blacksmith knee or leg vises, but you might find an idea to use that pipe the Reed is bolted to or some other method. i'm planning on making a few hitch type mounts on my benches for my vises and grinders. here's the link and best of luck figuring out a workspace with all the tools you have bought and will buy since you are a GJ member.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=252799

TP: so other than your Wilton missing it's pipe jaws your restoration looks pretty sweet and nice work on those letters. i think you might be looking at it too close or at some of Balane's and others masterpieces, but from my seat that one would look and work great on most any bench.
