.040 390 with a 428 crank 4.090 x 3.98

I was given a .030 390 that had a fresh rebuild but the 360 style pistons were .120 in the hole. I then picked up a freshly turned crank for 100.00 from a friend for the project.

This would have given me a .020 piston to deck.

Problem was the piston to wall clearance was a bit much for what I wanted
and I wanted to final hone with deck plate. I like a good ring seal . . ha

So decided to go .040 and buy new pistons. About this time found the c8-h heads had sunken valves. BBM Alum heads were on sale . . . It snowballed from there.

These are the BBM heads. With just a valve job the flow 299 cfm @ .600 on intake and a amazing 220 cfm @ .600 on exhaust side. Pretty good for out of the box heads for a engine that was designed in the mid to late 50's.

This will be a Zero Deck height 9.86 Compression engine. I am coming up with a near perfect DCR of 8.06
Quench of .041

A few head pics.

Wow I have not heard of Big Bear yet, stuff looks great! Sold off most of my extra FE stuff when I moved from California in 1995. C3AE-J (?) 427 heads, freshly bored .027 but not honed 427 top oiler block, tunnel wedge intake and other stuff. Still have one 428 CJ sitting in the garage.

Sounds like the monster wants out!

Be careful about offering up air plane tickets. I saw that and started checking my work schedule. It's been a long winter up here.

Ha, Just let me know where to send ticket! Nice time of year here right now.

I think we just re-did your work schedule . .

If we worked 1/2 days (12hrs) we could have it driving by April 1st

Glad to hear you're feeling better.

I wish you'd made the offer a while ago, I literally just went back to work this week! It's been in the mid-high 40's here all week, and I still have 2' of snow in the yard, and 4' covering 2 spots in the driveway...

Another reason to love Arizona!

I make a trip to the nearest title place to get plates and transfer title on the
F250 Ranger. Sublet place because never any waiting. costs a bit more . .

Its now registered until July of 2019 and check out the total cost!

Arizona really favors old vehicles as far as cost of ownership.

It would not matter if it was a multi million $$ restoration or what its value is this is the price.

There is no sales tax on vehicle purchases to a private party. zip, nadda

To top it off I get full coverage insurance with comp & collision, full glass and towing for 156.00 per YEAR! No limit on how many miles I can drive.

How much would this have cost on your state?

I could buy a lambo or a ford gt and there would be no sales tax here if purchased from private party.

OK!

Glad to hear that your up and about again.

In regards to the Bronco, you should just convince your daughter how cool the patina looks.

She already bought the paint and materials. Looks like today I have to push the eco project out of shop to get her bronco in. Did not touch the bronco yesterday and only today and tomorrow to get it finished . . Maybe with a crew of 50 people . . She took the day off from work although has not showed up yet. its only 8 am

Glad to hear you're feeling better.

81 & SUNNY today. the humidity creeped up a bit with 33% this morning. ha

Forgot, I also purchased a 1998 Buick Skylark with 70k miles for a "driver" while I am doing my projects and also to give the daughter something to drive because I full well know the Bronco will not be finished by saturday evening. We have not started sanding yet and its not all the way "apart". Had a couple bumper bolts that took a few hours to get out.

Title transfer and plates for buick? $37.75 total no tax . . .

A little old lady car bought new local, she just turned 95.

Car in great shape, runs good (after a crank sensor change) In most states this would be a total cream puff. UGLY, yeah . LOL

I spent March of 08 in Yuma Arizona working with MRAP's. I loved it, the weather was gorgeous, warmed up gradually throughout the month so you didn't even notice how warm it was.

Beginning of April it was around 100 at the airfield when we left, and arrived at Ft. Drum to snow falling...

Looking out my window right now, I'd love to be out that way... that four letter S word just keeps coming...

TimeWarp, I had to finally sign up and say hello and well done on the great work. I had seen some of your posts across some other Ford forums during the last few years and a while back I found this complete thread and was stoked. I love the updates and the way you post your progress and thought process.

I love this pic your old truck. I have a similar one myself. Here's a pic. She came out of South Carolina and now lives in NSW, Australia. It too is a 390. It has a C6 and only 98k on the clock. It's very different for around here, you don't see many clean trucks at all.

Hi Walt!

I have been busy with everything but the eco project.

Daughters Bronco in shop for paint now, I am only getting a hour or so per day on it so slow progress.

But, Plan is to somehow some way get the truck running by April 1st or even on April 1st.

So even if I do not have front completely hung starting Next Tuesday I plan on starting to hook things up so I can get it fired and move it on its own power. I would need to make a temp battery mount and make sure I have a place for all the grounds.

Drive train is fully done now too. Only thing on chassis needed before I drove it around yard would be to align the front end.

Basically drop dash in place then start to hook it up.

About the only items that will be inop is the airbag system.

Just graded the yard and driveway today after heavy rains so the ride should be smoooooth. LOL!

Having a hard time trying to get everything to fit underhood. I have approx 7" less in height than a 2011-2014 F150. 2-3" shorter front of firewall also.

Just not enough hours in a day or the energy to do much.

R

What insurance company, is it an agreed value policy?

I do have a agreed value. Do not want to post the company online as recently did my first claim and the customer service sucked. Non at fault loss where one of our cars was rear ended now they are jacking the rates way up. Fought them tooth and nail for a fair TL settlement. It had to go to arbitration where the arbitrator even gave more than I asked for. Typical Insurance company.
Took 2 months of my time fighting them.

Still working on daughters Bronco hoping the next primer will be final. Taking waaay too long.

Stopped on Bronco around 7 pm and figured "what if" we took a look at what all needed to be done to get the EcoBoost Project up and running.

In 2 1/2 hours spent we are darn close to making a starting attempt!

I think at least 1/2 of that time was spent looking for parts and hardware to do that.
For sure a Issue when its been almost exactly 3yrs since it was torn apart.

Could not find the retainer clip and clamps to install the intercooler other wise it was just a matter of adding fuel and a battery and was hoping it would actually FIRE!

So close but yet so far, but this was done in the fraction of time I thought it would take.

I would say we are now only a couple hours away from getting it fired up!

Will see how that goes . . . LOL!

How many think it will start with the first turn of key? After priming the system with fuel of course . .

Had not even planned on doing this until next week. Plug n play stuff is easy compared to some of the rest of the work done.

Hook up shifter cable, install rear brake hoses, add fluids, use laptop to bleed the brakes and a bit of front end wheel alignment and this thing my move on its own power!

Oh yeah, that pesky intercooler . .

We actually have HVAC installed to see if it will work.

We did the EcoBoost's first engine oil and filter change this evening too.

Getting close to a nail biter !

I am expecting it to fire the first time and you'll be winning the state lottery. Might as well dream big!
Actually, I am thinking you will try, then remember that last little thing you forgot, then it will crank a bit and then fire up.

I've been following this since the beginning, can't wait to see it fired up! It didn't look like it would be such a tough build when you rolled the new frame under it and the body mounts matched up. It's sure been a long time and a lot of work since then, thanks for sharing it with us.

How about some Bronco progress pics???

Here is what we started with. The Arizona sun pretty much baked off the paint. Its been sitting for probably 20yrs. Only 46k orig miles on the clock but the extreme AZ weather took a toll.

Military family bought it new in Virginia then shortly after got transferred to AZ then it was taken to Germany then back to AZ. It was given to a son also in the military. When he got back to AZ it would not start so he bought another Bronco and borrowed a few parts.

My daughter rebuilt the entire fuel system and now more recently the entire brake system. Added new tires etc

We steam cleaned most of the paint off a couple years ago when she first got it the remaining paint could not be feathered so it was pretty much sanded down to primer.

The paint on roof and hood was completely baked off, daughter removed rust scrubbing it with scotch brite pads and metal conditioner.

The topper was destroyed by the AZ sun so we found another for 100.00. It will be painted flat black along with hood.

Doing a color change a bit more work too. Original a dark charcoal color and of course for a first paint job for her the best is black right? Mine was so thought this would be fitting and also look nice with the red interior.

Original top was white.

DP74LF PPG primer I have had good luck with this stuff for on bare metal and initial prime. Its so expensive may change in the future but its been many years using this stuff and hard to change for a old fart set in his ways . .

As it sits now in the blocking primer K36

Body was decent with no major dents so we are just removing a few minor dings. Any factory waves will have to stay along with body fitment. We will not adjust doors etc
Left fender fit is very poor but for now it will have to wait for a rainy day. Simply no time,
I need it out of shop and daughter wants to drive it. She has had it nearly 3yrs and its just been sitting. Not a cheap paint job because of high materials cost but no doubt its not a big $$ job either. It will probably be 1500.00 in materials by the time we are done.

I am sure some noted the IMPROPER way to mask a vehicle. I always keep any folds tucked underneath. For paint I would not have let that fly but for primer since it was already done before I noticed. Pretty much a dust and dirt collector with the dirt going on a fresh paint job having it masked that way. It will be a "bit" more proper on the final paint . . LOL!

Fingers crossed. Always a sweet moment when you fire up a project.

I am expecting it to fire the first time and you'll be winning the state lottery. Might as well dream big!
Actually, I am thinking you will try, then remember that last little thing you forgot, then it will crank a bit and then fire up.

It will seem like I won the lottery the first time it moves on its own power.
It will probably have a Home Depot "Bucket Seat" Lots of those orange pails around . .

I may get to see it running!

In the words of Peter Griffin "Frickin Sweet!"

Subscribed!! Great write up of a great project..

Ya, It was a "bit" more work than anticipated! I am sure there are still 1000 hours left before its finished too . . I really need a daily driver so in the end it just may not get painted . .

Time to order some more parts needed so I can get it fired up for first time.

My 418 FE should have final machine work done this week so I also need to get it together to sell so it will give funds to finish the Eco Project.

Have been waiting on the small end rod bushings from Crower. Undersized hole so we can get the rod lengths perfect. The crank was already indexed and now all the throws have proper and equal strokes too.

Decks will be squared and all pistons will have Zero deck. 9.87 to 1 Static compression and a 8.06 Dynamic should make this a nice 91 Octane street engine.

This engine will be used to also compare costs between building a basic American V-8 vs going to a late model EFI engine swap.
