va.gman: yes, wrenchman MADE me do it.;) It's funny how you go from a 4.5" Reed to an 8.5" Prentiss in just a few short months. :lol_hitti I guess the big ones find you when they are ready because I certainly wasn't looking. OK, wasn't looking that hard

20150322_215428.jpg

The dynamic jaw comes in at 135 lbs and 31 or so inches from meatball to end.

20150322_214237.jpg

The static and swivel together weigh about 185 lbs, I can't tell exactly because it covered the entire scale (and then some). But somewhere in the 320 lbs range total. After a day of golf and then ******* the bad boy around this 140 lbs guy is absolutely whooped.

Jeff, great find, That thing is huge! Also nice beer case idea, but I do have one question.

How do you drink that PBR garbage? :spit:

Another great restore on what is a fantastic vise to begin with. Hollands are like the underdogs of the old vise, they are as big and strong as any of the popular names but often overlooked (because there aren't many around?)

Kevin, is that Hollands from the "golden pile"?

Yes, I bought this one two Reed 6 incher's and the Prentiss #58 on the first visit. I am really impressed with the Hollands.

Nice vise Jeff picked up this weekend. The big guys came out this weekend.

A Hollands 7", two Reed 6", and a Prentiss 58, not withstanding what else you got from that find, those 4 vise would easily satisfy my vise collection, possibly for good. :)

Well I missed the big Prentiss, but you have to figure that there is always another boat leaving port tomorrow.---Glad it didn't go to a public facility where the workers treat tools with no respect just because they belong to someone else.---I've worked in one of those places for 36 years.---I've seen it all.---I'm proud to say I was not one of those guys.

I did however cotton onto a set of Prentiss/Athol pipe jaws, like B100's AD post on page 1338,---post 26741.---Just needed that 98 to put them on.:bounce:

Nothing special but worthy of a post I think. It's a Columbian 504 1/2 in their best looking generation imho. T-Jaw inserts are great. This is a texture base coat and then Italian Olive Satin enamel for color. Works great too. 47 Lbs. Opens to 7"

.

Very nice! I've got it's 604 1/2 Swivelin' B@$t@rd brethren in my queue. Hope mine turns out half as good as yours.

Wow.... All this talk of these huge 8 inch vises you fellas find and all I can find is the junior league level size ones like these. A Parker 31, a Hollands oldie and two no names. Ahh well...they make for more room on the collector shelf I guess and the Parker 106-5 I have is about as big as I want to hump around my shop....

Below in response to Prentiss 98 postings:

20150322_221619.jpg

Jeff: congrats on becoming a member of the 8 inch and bigger vise club before me. Golf and big vises sounds like a good combo. Nice touch with the 12 pack for sizing.

drives (Dean): Thank you, sir! Yes, doesn't get much better than G&V. Call me crazy, but somehow I have a feeling you are going to be the next one in the 8+ club. Once you get the 8+er and I get a 368yd golf drive we will be about even, but somehow I think yours will come first (if mine ever comes at all :bounce:).

Jeff, great acquisition! Not sure what you paid but just for getting a big boy like that, you ****! Was model mentioned anywhere, is that a 98?

FMC: Thank you! I am happy as a clam over here right now. And great eye, yes that is a Prentiss 98. My first piece of NY steel.

Jeff, great find, That thing is huge! Also nice beer case idea, but I do have one question.

How do you drink that PBR garbage? :spit:

~Veeps

bagged (Veeps): It's really easy! I take a cold one from the fridge, pop the top and then pour the liquid gold down my facehole. But honestly, me drinking stuff like that means I have ducats left over for the really important things ... you know, like a Prentiss 98 ;)

Trijeff,
I really like the beer case to show the size of that monster.

Thanks, Mark! That was clamped up all tight, however there were several more inches to spare. Also, you can see on the jaw side that it clamps the entire case side, which is absolutely ridiculous of course ;) A very secure beer holder to be sure, gotta protect the liquid gold at all costs.

PRENTISS 98

Jeff , I had the phone in my hand just after you posted on Saturday night. I started thinking freight would be $300.00 ?? and put the phone back down. I looked again and your post was gone so I figured one of the vise sharks had called or you changed your mind.

GRAO: Yeah, with the big ones, you either have to be very (financially) committed or just luck out big time that these big boys pop up close (as is the case here). Really, really, REALLY don't need this right now but thinking that the numbers of the ginormous vises are certainly limited (as well as not being produced anymore) so I decided to jump off the deep end. With the demand for the big boys I figured I couldn't go wrong ... I'd either keep and enjoy or make another envious GJ member take out a second mortgage ;)

I was number two in line, been hunting for a big vise for my shop for a while. He told me if you didn't take it he'd call me back. Damn.

Lu-Max (Tim): Yeah, sorry you missed out on this one, Vince (the seller) told me all about you before I ever saw your posts :bounce: Yet, even though I feel a little bad, you are now living in seriously the absolute best area in the entire world so there has to be trade-offs  What I wouldn't give to be able to jump back out on those roads from my front door (says the cyclist)

Da Big Vise Consortium---

Has Struck!!!

oldldh: Indeed! Struck and happy to be part of the BVC, at least for now. Predictably, the wife is not as excited. When I finally humped this thing inside without assistance of anyone/anything I was super excited to show her. I said, "look at even just the handle on this thing ... isn't that absolutely ridiculous???" She whole-heartedly agreeed, but it was more of a "YOU'RE absolutely ridiculous," if I'm still able to read sarcasm correctly.

I have a Massacheswetts phone number and called the last nite and tied it up, then made arrangements with jeff and told him he should get it for himself. He got it and decided to keep it like i suggested. Great for him. I have dibs if it doest work out 4 jeff. He'll post pics when he can.

wrenchguy (Mike): you either get the biggest thank you in the world or I'll send you a copy of my divorce papers. Time will tell which one. :bounce: But seriously, HUGE kudos for being a straight shooter and telling it like it is, especially to a rookie GJ'er ... you definitely have built up a few points in the 'good karma' department

Well I missed the big Prentiss, but you have to figure that there is always another boat leaving port tomorrow.---Glad it didn't go to a public facility where the workers treat tools with no respect just because they belong to someone else.---I've worked in one of those places for 36 years.---I've seen it all.---I'm proud to say I was not one of those guys.

va.gman: Great pipe jaws, have not seen those ones before! I know you were disappointed to not bring this bad boy home, but rest assured that it will be babied and coddled at least in comparison to what it would see in a commercial (esp. public) environment. There's an outside possibility this one may not stay in my stables forever (I find out on another 8" plus later this week), but wrenchguy promised to take good care of this one should I ever let it go ;)

ALL: Thanks (I think!!!) for stoking the vise fire - this has been a blast and hasn't led into any serious trouble (yet, at least). If anyone does have a catalog page for the Prentiss 98 I would be much obliged - I have only seen up to 97 at this point. I'd love to see an official weight on this one, think it might be a titch more than the 320# I came up with.

So not to sound dumb, but does anyone know where to find the freeze plug/end cap for wilton vises?

Kamanhart: freeze plugs are certainly an option, but check out this suggestion from straightcut:

... Don't go with the freeze plug. Check your vise and go with one of these if it fits: http://www.etrailer.com/Grease-Caps/Fulton/F001610.html

These were a perfect fit for my Wilton 450.

Also, another route besides freeze plugs is detailed here by dunstan.

If one of these methods doesn't work, there are freeze plugs available from nearly an auto parts store. Check out the post from Gary Indiana, lots of detail there (post 12177 page 609).

Forgive me if someone has already posted additional info on the vise I have linked below. I am curious because my grandpa has the same vise except a different color and he has always been quite proud of it. haha I would like to share with him what I find out about it! It is the only vise I have ever seen to utilize an adjustable gib and dovetail slide like a milling machine. Thanks in advance!

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=606739&postcount=73

Your vise looks to be a Polish made FPU. Many of them have been posted in this thread - just use the thread search feature and search on FPU. They are still being manufactured by Bison-Bial in a slightly different style.

FPU = Fabryka Przyrzadow i Uchwytow AKA Bison-BIAL

http://www.bison-bial.com/vises/bench-vises/1240

IMHO one of the finest bench vises made - I like to refer to them as Turtle Vises (Turtle - zolw (zool).

Jaws close tight and true, screw is enclosed, the ways and gibs make it adjustable for wear. Good Stuff!

Hey,

Sorry had not found that vise info myself thanks. By the way if anyone has a Prentiss Bulldog 525 the pin in the picture comes out from the top down. After more clean up and diameter comparison I tapped it down as the bottom side forward the base is larger.

Was at lunch on my computer and I saw this vise advertised for $50. It was 5 miles from me so I ran to get it. Paid $20 plus I traded it for a Japanese made 4" craftsman vise in very clean shape that I had paid $15 for, so total investment $35!

I like this Reed very much.

I have no clue what brand it is...Keebler Cookie Elf vise I think.
Here's just a few I keep stubbing my toe on around my shop. :p

On the little green guy, pretty sure it's a Colton. Look at the face of the static jaw where the dynamic enters it, around the opening is probably patent info, or pat pending.

Cyph: i wonder if your pin was a previous owner's fix to a loose vise nut? anybody else have a Prentiss bulldog vise nut's pin go from the top down and out?

i'm guessing it's all apart now and ready for your magic?

Jeff: you were only 20 yards short from my longest drive in completion as a senior, but if you hit it 368 downwind and downhill that's good in my book since you now have a 300 pound vise. congrats and best of luck with the Happy wife, Happy life part.

VA: so you bought the pipe jaws for a vise you don't own yet? way to plan ahead and may i ask what they might have set you back?

A while back I responded to a Craigslist ad regarding an "old school" metal organizer with metal drawers. In my haste I missed in the rest of the ad that he had two vises forsale. A couple weeks go by and I finally read his reposed ad and see the picture of the vises (picture below) on his drill press.

The two vises were a 6" Bridgeport mill vise with swivel base and a Heinrich 6SV Gripmaster 6" drill press vise.

The two vises lived outside on the drill press but in spite of this the condition was OK with a bit of rust. So I lugged the two vises home and proceeded to re-rust them in a 10:1 molasses solution. I have been using this for a while as it does not remove paint and does not have any directionality (like removing rust with a car battery charger). I have had good success over the years with this technique. Unfortunately in this case while the cast iron vise cleaned up nicely, the hardened steel jaws did not. After a few days the jaws were almost done, so I put them back in the solution. After two more days I discovered a hard black scale had formed over the exposed surfaces of the jaws. The back of the jaws was hardly touched. This was quite a disappointment.

Fortunately KMScott offered to surface grind the jaws and clean them up for a reasonable price (Thanks Scott!). So now a week later I was able to reassemble the vise. I considered repainting it, but since I am going to use it I figured clean and rust free was what I really needed.

Now to find a 3/4" square drive handle for it.

The Heinrich vise has its own equivalent of the "arc of shame" from poorly placed drill marks. I cleaned it up and replaced the ball at the end of the main shaft. I should really replace the thin jaw inserts - it would look a lot better. But overall it is quite functional.

What is really odd about the Heinrich is that the main shaft has a 3/8-18 female thread in one end and a 3/8-24 thread in the other end. Otherwise it is completely symmetrical. You would think they would have picked one thread or the other! In spite of that oddity I do like the vise and it works well.

At $20 each I was surprised to see that someone else had not purchased them after two weeks of advertising.

Hey Cypherian,

I have that exact vise but in a 5". I believe these are outsourced FPU (Poland) vises. Does it say India on the silver retainer plate holding the spindle handle on the front of the vise?

16912993645_a175e1f03b_o.jpg

They are actually great vises. I'm currently restoring two wiltons, the FPU and a mill vise. The FPU has the best feel and the least amount of backlash out of all of them.

Be careful stripping the paint, the painter at the factory was an artist as he did an amazing job with bondo to hide all the imperfections from the casting and rough grinding marks. I'll post once it's painted.

It is almost last to do is the Castellated nut and take it over to a buddies to blast the innards clean going to try walnut shells and see how it cleans up. I am still debating the handle redo it is pretty badly corroded on one end. Whatever is not painted is going to get buffed out. Also still deciding on the swivel lock too. It had a hex bolt with a reversed flanged lock nut and a wrench on it . I think I can come up with a Square bolt of the right size and use a long piece of threaded hex material with a small sliding handle at the end.

Thanks for the links to the pages I am going to direct my buddy to them he sadly only owns one vise lol and that is it.

macgee,

I recently stripped my FPU, and you are correct. Lots of OEM bondo on that thing. Maybe I should put it back before a new coat of paint. They are a **** vise. Mine has the infamous broken front bolt area on the gib, but has been brazed. And brazed well I may add.

Striper, Gotta give a shout out that you ****.

While I didn't score as well as you did, I did buy these two vices and a small wood box.

The box ended up being a nice little walnut box from the 1850's and marked Dumothier, he made very rare handmade pistols in Paris; go figure.

The Wilton C0 had three coats of different paint .

I have to say say it does't get any easier trying to rehab a vise after doing a bunch of them. It's still hard work. After a bunch of paint stripping, several sessions of Naval Jelly and then a lot more elbow grease, the wilton is almost ready for painting.

The wood vise is a nice little Columbian 6CD ($20). I'm pretty excited about that one, it works perfectly and I was actually looking for a small wood vise for a project table.

Now I just have to paint them.

Someone offered me $300 for my Wilton 1760. It's hard to decide wether I should keep it or sell it for nice profit.
