Below in response to Prentiss 98 postings:
Jeff: congrats on becoming a member of the 8 inch and bigger vise club before me. Golf and big vises sounds like a good combo. Nice touch with the 12 pack for sizing.
drives (Dean): Thank you, sir! Yes, doesn't get much better than G&V. Call me crazy, but somehow I have a feeling you are going to be the next one in the 8+ club. Once you get the 8+er and I get a 368yd golf drive we will be about even, but somehow I think yours will come first (if mine ever comes at all

).
Jeff, great acquisition! Not sure what you paid but just for getting a big boy like that, you ****! Was model mentioned anywhere, is that a 98?
FMC: Thank you! I am happy as a clam over here right now. And great eye, yes that is a Prentiss 98. My first piece of NY steel.
Jeff, great find, That thing is huge! Also nice beer case idea, but I do have one question.
How do you drink that PBR garbage?
~Veeps
bagged (Veeps): It's really easy! I take a cold one from the fridge, pop the top and then pour the liquid gold down my facehole.

But honestly, me drinking stuff like that means I have ducats left over for the
really important things ... you know, like a Prentiss 98
Trijeff,
I really like the beer case to show the size of that monster.
Thanks,
Mark! That was clamped up all tight, however there were several more inches to spare. Also, you can see on the jaw side that it clamps the entire case side, which is absolutely ridiculous of course

A very secure beer holder to be sure, gotta protect the liquid gold at all costs.
PRENTISS 98
Jeff , I had the phone in my hand just after you posted on Saturday night. I started thinking freight would be $300.00 ?? and put the phone back down. I looked again and your post was gone so I figured one of the vise sharks had called or you changed your mind.
GRAO: Yeah, with the big ones, you either have to be very (financially) committed or just luck out big time that these big boys pop up close (as is the case here). Really, really, REALLY don't need this right now but thinking that the numbers of the ginormous vises are certainly limited (as well as not being produced anymore) so I decided to jump off the deep end. With the demand for the big boys I figured I couldn't go wrong ... I'd either keep and enjoy or make another envious GJ member take out a second mortgage
I was number two in line, been hunting for a big vise for my shop for a while. He told me if you didn't take it he'd call me back. Damn.
Lu-Max (Tim): Yeah, sorry you missed out on this one, Vince (the seller) told me all about you before I ever saw your posts

Yet, even though I feel a little bad, you are now living in seriously the absolute best area in the entire world so there has to be trade-offs

What I wouldn't give to be able to jump back out on those roads from my front door (says the cyclist)
Da Big Vise Consortium---
Has Struck!!!
oldldh: Indeed! Struck and happy to be part of the BVC, at least for now. Predictably, the wife is not as excited. When I finally humped this thing inside without assistance of anyone/anything I was super excited to show her. I said, "look at even just the handle on this thing ... isn't that absolutely ridiculous???" She whole-heartedly agreeed, but it was more of a "
YOU'RE absolutely ridiculous," if I'm still able to read sarcasm correctly.
I have a Massacheswetts phone number and called the last nite and tied it up, then made arrangements with jeff and told him he should get it for himself. He got it and decided to keep it like i suggested. Great for him. I have dibs if it doest work out 4 jeff.

He'll post pics when he can.
wrenchguy (Mike): you either get the biggest thank you in the world or I'll send you a copy of my divorce papers. Time will tell which one.

But seriously, HUGE kudos for being a straight shooter and telling it like it is, especially to a rookie GJ'er ... you definitely have built up a few points in the 'good karma' department
Well I missed the big Prentiss, but you have to figure that there is always another boat leaving port tomorrow.---Glad it didn't go to a public facility where the workers treat tools with no respect just because they belong to someone else.---I've worked in one of those places for 36 years.---I've seen it all.---I'm proud to say I was not one of those guys.
I did however cotton onto a set of
Prentiss/Athol pipe jaws, like
B100's AD post on
page 1338,---post 26741.---Just needed that 98 to put them on.
va.gman: Great pipe jaws, have not seen those ones before! I know you were disappointed to not bring this bad boy home, but rest assured that it will be babied and coddled at least in comparison to what it would see in a commercial (esp. public) environment. There's an outside possibility this one may not stay in my stables forever (I find out on another 8" plus later this week), but
wrenchguy promised to take good care of this one should I ever let it go
ALL: Thanks (I think!!!) for stoking the vise fire - this has been a blast and hasn't led into any serious trouble (yet, at least).
If anyone does have a catalog page for the Prentiss 98 I would be much obliged - I have only seen up to 97 at this point. I'd love to see an official weight on this one, think it might be a titch more than the 320# I came up with.
