Evening all:
Name is Ray and I'm a 71 year old semi-retired sign artist.Found this site while researching a vintage tool I purchased today.Don't normally collect vintage tools but somehow have acquired a bunch of them over the years. My main interests are collecting vintage knives and wristwatches.
Saw a couple familiar names from the Jalopy Journal message board while perusing the board here so I decided to use my name from there. Looking forward to talking old tools with other members and whatever else. Thanks for having me.

Welcome Ray from another Michigander! Lots of antique tools on this forum. I think you will find a lot of info here.

Safari: welcome to our group and you sound like you'll fit right in. just for kicks have you heard of a burr king belt grinder for sharpening knives? of course that is maybe the top end and i'm looking for a nice used one.

what tools do you have to sharpen knives or work on your older tools? you might visit this Craftsman block grinder thread to see what a great bunch of guys have done with such a simple old bench grinder.

I hope it's finally warming up a bit for you and that frozen part of the US so you can get out and enjoy some sales and sunshine again.

cheers

Thank you for the welcome! I have heard of the Burr King and although I don't have one i'm told they are very good. Baldor also makes an excellent grinder.
I have a small Craftsman(I think)1"x30" belt sander/disc sander I use for most of my work.I've had a couple different ones over the years. I also use a small."off shore" brand grinder/polisher that works satisfactorily. My tools are a bit primitive;my drill press is actually a fixture that holds a 3/8ths inch hand drill and is big enough for my needs.
In addition to being a sign artist/pinstriper I also like to dabble in making stuff from Lexan. A friend of mine got a supply of 1/2" optical grade Lexan(think broken hockey rink windows)and I use it to make knife prototypes and custom illuminated hood ornaments. This is what happens when you retire and can't stand sitting around reading or the like.

SK: you might have been bored or not willing to just sit, but you have some awesome talent making those clear knives. do they cut or just decorative?

are you finding everything ok and soaking up some good information? looks like a few Michigan members are seeing your intro thread too.

thanks for the pictures and what is under that pinstriped hood?
