I recently posted here about the refurbishing of a Wilton C1 I bought at auction last week.
I was searching online for replacement jaws for this vise, because mine were in bad shape. Lots of cutting torch damage, and overall wear and tear.
i-kj92nRB-M.jpg

When I saw what replacement jaws are selling for, I reconsidered my options.

I decided to weld up the holes and see if I could save my jaws.
Filling in the voids:
i-b8TsmXt-M.jpg

Ground them back to shape:
i-5fxnRNt-M.jpg

Used a 60 degree triangle file to re-cut the faces of the jaws:
i-vbb9xqL-M.jpg

And they are more than good enough to last another forty years or so:
i-8LxzgCn-M.jpg

So, then I swapped the Wilton onto my workbench, in place of the Athol I had there:
i-gzxBQW6-M.jpg

i-RNczf48-M.jpg

And I was going to swap the Athol onto my welding bench in place of the Craftsman that currently resides there:
i-77nHP69-M.jpg

But the more I looked at it, the less I could see any reason to replace the Craftsman. It has better jaws than the Athol, and is the same size, and has served me well as a welding bench vice, so I decides to keep it there.

So, my 4-1/2" Athol is now homeless, relegated to storage status. Oh well, I only paid $20 for it anyway.

That's a great idea with the triangle file! Good fix

Steevo, build a stand for it. It has no swivel, so from that perspective it's perfect, as who doesn't need an "I need a vise over here" vise?

VA: Vinegar and brass makes the brass look like copper (it leaches the tin out somehow) so I would not go there.

You can do a quick swipe with vinegar and usually get away with it, but a soak will do the copper thing to it.

I want a Parker swivel and saw both a 974 and 22x for $150 and. $ 125 respectively. Both look restored but the guy with the 22x said he'll take $85. Trying to see if he's willing to meet me during his lunch break from work.

Hey Veeps, sorry I wasn't clear, my post was referring to the Athol loudog asked about. Have a Parker swivel or 2, but they're not currently in use.

Holy mother of all that is holy, take my money now.

That is absolutely amazing work! Where do you live, here on the eastern side of the mountains? I'm up outside of Colville. Keep up the great work!

Filson....I'm over here in little ol' Richland. Thanks for the kind words. I probably should stick to the vise topic and not post knife pictures. Sorry if I strayed off topic fellas.

JB: i can't speak for everyone, but that is one dandy knife and happy you posted it if you made it yourself. i don't know much about knifemaking, but the pattern you did on that blade and the carved figure in the handle is amazing.

Loudog: i can understand money is tight or that you don't need another vise, but Athol vises are far above the $35 price range in quality and not real common in my area. thanks for posting and if it isn't cracked or welded on it's a money maker or user.

Steevo: awesome job and i think i mentioned you can also buy some copper jaws off of Ebay for $35 that are 6 inches wide for extra gripping power. here's a Wilton C1 i sold that had those copper jaws on it.

VN: nice looking trio

Hey GJ,

Today I picked up my first vice(s). I was buying some other stuff and worked them into the deal.

The nicer one is a Morgan Chicago 45, I think it just needs a good cleaning and some grease.
The rusty one is a Chas Parker 105, it's all there but needs some work.

I ended up paying $75 for the pair, I usually like to research something to death first but I didn't have the chance. How do you think I did?

Dustin

Thanks fellas....the blade was made using 1084 H/C steel blended with a 15n20 nickel creating a Damascus billet that is 228 folds. The feather pattern is created by splitting the completed forged billet slowly (almost like fire wood splitting. The slow downward split creates the veins of the feather pattern. The billet is then forged back together and sliced on a band saw to make the blade. I use a Foredom drill to do the carving on the antler.

If there are no cracks or welds, you made a super deal

JB: you make it sound so easy and i know it's not. nice work and I think VA or another member started a knife thread where you and Vintage and others can add on to it. or maybe you can make a new thread and show us how to attempt to make a piece of steel into a work of art.

WW: one of the vises looks like it might be missing a pin or sleeve holding the main screw in the dynamic, but at that price for both i'd expect a few issues and those are not small vises.

Lu-Max-congrats and that did sound a bit weird, but welcome to the 8 inch club from a non-member

CM 5195 vise

Hello CM vise guru's, I recently picked up a 3.5" CM vise and have a few questions. The vise seems to open and close quite smoothly but the spindle nut seems to have a lot of lateral play in the main dynamic housing. I'm not sure if this is from general wear since 1955 or could this be a nut from a different vise? Green arrows on image show the gap I'm referring to.

The Reed 104 I picked up in January does not have this much play between the nut and housing-- very minimal.

Thanks!!

Slide that nut out and take pics, but I don't think that is the original nut...

It might be off topic but I do not care in the least. You sir are a master of your craft. I dream to one day be as good at anything as you are at making knives and working metal. What a place it would be if we could all be even half that good at what we chose to spend our time on. Please start a thread or a galley somewhere so we can all go and drool and feel inadequate together.

I remember seeing a milling machine in your shop, hand filing is hard on your fingers. These three pair take 45 minutes to serrate.
Curious to what type of welding rod you used and did it get pretty hard after welding. Nice work.

VA, you need some help??

Maybe its just me, but I would much rather have smooth brass or aluminum jaws in a vise I'm using. Most of my work is stuff I don't want jaw marks in, and it saves me having to use jaw covers every time. I made the first pair with a hacksaw and a drillpress.
I guess for collectors value the original jaws are nice, but I'm not really a huge fan in terms of use

you can never have too many tools

Danstead, that is the same spindle nut as I have in my 5196 (I'm 90% sure. I'll check tomorrow). Did you try just putting it back in and then and adjusting the lash adjuster so it is tight? The simplest thing would be to shim the bottom of the spindle nut til it is tight then reinstall the lash adjuster and tighten it up.

just my 2 cents

Dan, that backlash adjusting cut was what I was looking for; Its certainly the right style of nut, but that loose fit makes no sense, unless possible there are shims missing. I don't recall seeing any shims on mine...
