Oh yeah, and if anyone is interested my dad picked up a little vise recently I can post pictures of when I get back home tomorrow.
Its a little toolmakers vise. He's currently in the process of making some brass jaws for it. What's interesting about this one is that it's not factory made. These things were the first year project for apprentice machinists at the local navy dockyards. He picked one up from a guy we buy a lot from on Craigslist, who was an electrician there until he retired. Really neat little vise!

you can never have too many tools

A Drunk Chimpanzee???

I resemble that remark!!!!:bounce:

The name of that particular method is...

"The Little Dab'll Do You" method...[emoji106]
"A little dab'll do you" was the slogan for Brylcreem when I grew up. I won't put that **** on my hair, let alone my valuable vises. [emoji33]

I finished a vise! :shocking:

It has been a while! :eyecrazy:

Here is my "new" REED 2C, dated 12/68.

Two "before" pics, three "after" pics and one "REED 'C' family photo". :scared:
2 finished, 2 to go...

I traded a Wilton 600S for this a while back. :headscrat
I took a little ribbing when I made that offer on here, but I was serious, lol! :bounce:

Take care!

Happy Easter to all. My supposed future son-in-law brought me this yesterday.... trying to get on my good side ... not sure I like him ... I may keep it and regift it to him as a wedding gift with a piece of yellow nylon rope for his boat

I agree, a bronze bushing would work well especially if the bore in the dynamic support is a clean hole.

The spindle flange could be welded to fill in the missing piece but a better fix would be to machine the flange away but not all the way down to the spindles major diameter, and weld a flange back in place. Keep us posted on your repairs.

Good point not to machine the flange all the way down. That will make it easier to weld it and keep it aligned.

Haha. I thought you were going to say a nylon rope to tie it around his waist.

I've tried it all and nothing works better than this method. A huge bonus is that it's so easy even a drunk chimpanzee could do it.

That does seem very easy as long as the letters are well defined. I'm going to try that on my Oswego. My athol on the other hand is a different story. These letters are a mess. I hit one section with paint stripper and a wire wheel the other day and it didn't get any better. I better practice my penmanship.

Haha. That one's simple: NO BLESSING until you figure out how to find good vises.

I've been casually on the hunt for an anvil alternative, since wailing on your vise is a no no. So I came across a CL listing today selling steel cut offs. Went over there today and came back with these, all 3 for $45. The large square is 3 inches thick and 70 lbs :shocking: The other 2 rectangles i'm going to be using as plates on my shop press. They also had the same 70 lb bricks in 304 stainless, one of those would run just over $100.

Mike, that's a wonderful collection. I wonder what happened to the casting molds for the Reed XC series? In my world, the late Reed combo was a great example of the perfect vise.

Remember that the most critical placement for mass in an anvil is directly below the hammering surface. Setting the large block on edge is more effective than having it flat.

For those of you who have seen these vises posted here, well Meatsis had discovered their origin...at last.

Yes I get that. My main purpose is pounding rusted nuts out of sockets and very light straightening. I'm not doing any blacksmithing or Heavy duty work with it so I think it will work great for that. It's far heavier and thicker than any anvil surface on a vise for instance.

Reed 104: My First Vise Restoration.

Gentlemen, It finally warmed up enough in Western Pa so I finished painting my Reed. I know this isn't anywhere near as nice as you expert GURU's show but I'm quite pleased. Thanks so much to all of you for sharing info and being patient with a Vise Rookie! Can't believe how much I've learned since breaking my small 3.5 " Sears vise last fall. The entire Electrolysis process was really cool. I plan to use BLO on the C-Man 5195 I've acquired but grass mowing and fishing season is just around the corner---will have a wait a few months. I see many others Vise's here and on EB that I hope to find and restore!! I also hope that I can can help others as I continue to learn more about Vintage Vises!

Regards, :)

Thanks Nick!
You know I'm a Wilton NUT, but the Reed "C" series are the best vises I've ever had. They have a couple of weaknesses, but they are very minor (actually only 1 that I can think of.). I like them better than the Wilton "C's", but the C3 with the jaws that bolt from the back is a BEAST! (Had to throw a Wilton plug in there!)

Take care!

So I bid on this vise last week and forgot about it until today. No one else bid so I won it. It's a local pickup and it says seller accepts returns.

Nice job on that Reed. I like the color too. What color and paint did you use?

TP: so future son in law brings you a broken rusty vise and you are ok with that? is he testing to see how good your vise repair skills are or doesn't he know you really wanted maybe a Reed 4C?

Zoomie: i remember that trade you made with the other GJ member for you Reed 2c and thought he was very lucky. now you have the 1, 2, 3 and 4C's of Reed's best made vises i think and i saw your thoughts and agree 100%. nice collection BTW behind the C's too.

Dan: nice color on that Reed and does it glow in the dark? looking forward to a BLO finish on your 5195 when you get a chance. congrats on finishing your Reed.

Dan: that Reed is a lot nicer than those other vises you were asking if you should buy a month or so ago and that Craftsman 5195 is a keeper and maybe nicer yet. check out the vise stand thread if you want a few other options on how to mount your vise(es) and here's the link if you haven't seen it.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=252799

JRobb: nice hunks of steel and not a bad price.

Thank you!

I wanted to complete the set.
At the time I had 3 600S's and the gentleman lives pretty close so shipping wasn't an issue (luckily!).
We were both happy with the trade!
I just painted the 1C tonight, that I traded Nick a 4" very nice bullet for.
Another good trade!
Especially since he did all the prep work and I was a 10 minute drive from his house on a business trip when I picked it up, so shipping wasn't an issue there either.
I just had the get it ready to paint and it has a beautiful set of jaws on it that Kevin made.

Hey Z, I ain't sayin' its worth 200 bucks BUT I am saying its worth more than $25 I paid for it.

SOME people on this board say I'm lucky (TOPOP) but this was on CL for something like a month before I saw the ad. Me thinks you should make some bitter wine from those sour grapes you're growing!

To be fair regardless of the used price the fact the new price is over $500 and the company is still in business and honoring the lifetime warranties says it's worth more than the $25 you paid.

There's a pretty nice Craftsman 5195 over on Ebay...

Au Natural...

Manufacture date of 11-52....

Priced at $ 250.00...

Too much, for the smallest of the series...

But...

I guess the word is out on the 519X series of vises...

No more el cheapos...
