Yes! Its the same neglected vice. It didn't sell on ebay so I got in touch with him and bought it for £5. No, idea why the handle was so rusted. The vice belonged to the gentleman's grandad, and was left in the garden

I'm looking for a replacement spring, any idea where to get one?

Or I might have to fashion one from a length of this

rather than buying a complete quick release assembly

trijeff and balane and all

Thank you for the compliment!:)

I think that the 1 Ton refers to the capacity to clamp over one ton.

.....

I reckon your plan to buy some of that eBay spring is the way to go, another option that may work is to wind yourself a spring out of some stainless TIG welding wire.

You got a good deal for a fiver despite the handle and spring :)

I been lurking on this sight ever since I met joestriper (in a vise transaction of coarse). I have learned a lot from all of you. I feel like I know you guys. I am mainly an estate sale junkie who flips vintage tools. I thank all of you for the knowledge I have gained from this site, and the addiction to vises.

John, can you post up more pictures of the enormous Prentiss hiding on the back of your workbench?

The 1Ton rating on the Record would refer to the total force the vise is rated to apply. The pressure would then depend on how much area of the jaws were involved in the clamping. Pressure = Force / Area

I've seen a video where someone put a hydraulic cylinder with a gauge in the vise jaws and clamped down as hard as practicable to get a total tonnage value. Pretty cool idea. Does anyone on this thread ever try to take these measurements?

I had also thought about using strain gauges but that might get more convoluted!

02: that must be some bench. nice little collection of old vises and welcome officially to our group now that you can post more of your gems before selling them to Joe. just a warning if you stay here a while it gets a little harder to sell these old vises so you might think about getting another bench built for the new ones.

Fraggle: i thought you might have a few more hiding on a bench or in your shop. nice collection and i agree that you didn't over pay for the Parkinson. we have some great members making handles and parts for vises over here in the US and i'm guessing with all the members that are showing up in your area that you guys will have a good source for them too to save some of the sadder looking ones. thanks for posting the rest of your crew.

ZK: just trying to lend a little vice therapy to Lu-Max since he just moved into a huge old iron gold mine. don't want him to end up with a garage like mine that i can barely walk into.

mine are all for sale at the right price, but since some are like family maybe the price isn't very reasonable on some. I'm not 100% which ones i like the best yet to set a price to high to be untouchable. i'd give a group shot, but they are not all in one place currently. maybe one day in the near future i will have them sorted out, but not are sitting on another one currently.

I love that vintage American steel. Has a crack at back of slide.

I found the Prentiss 58 at a old shop going out of business over the winter. Couldn't let it just sit there. Lucky they had a forklift. My favorite which I sold was this Hollands 53 1/2 H.

Welcome to the gang, 02superduty - You've got (and in some cases, had) some really nice hardware there!! Do you have any of the Reed combination vises? I hear the 2 thru 4C are some of the nicest vises ever made. For a laugh, imagine this 140lb guy having to move the swivel version of the 58 (a 98) without help of a forklift or anyone else.:Freak:

Hollands made great vises, very underrated, my "go to vise" is a Hollands #25.
Nice stuff!

Interesting. Will you take some detailed pictures of that please? Particularly the top of the jaw towers (looking down) and then flip the vise over and take a shot from the bottom. How wide are the jaws? Those are really smooth, adjustable units.

Few pictures of the Bison/FPU vice, 3 inch jaw, only fault I've seen is a missing lock nut on one of the adjustment grub screws.

I've got that Fortis in the vat. Gave it a quick scrub earlier and found a crows foot underneath the rust/grime on the rear jaw, so military, and it's dated 1953.

Dutch:

That's gutting with the Parkinson. Which courier company was responsible for that carnage? Keep us updated on progress with the repair. :)

CW:

Nice Bison.

I'm looking for a replacement spring, any idea where to get one?

Is the spring actually missing or knacked, else is it just the looped end which has snapped off? The 75, and others, look good btw.

It was delivered by UPS.
It is a shame, its the nicest I have ever managed to buy and the only one that's been broken in the post so far, but that's life and at least its an easily fixable area, and I know your well aware how uncommon the little ones are.

103 1/2 I picked up the other day. Pretty stout for the size.

Aye, both uncommon and in good original condition. They know how to pick their targets. As you say though, at least it should be a straight forward fix, and fortunately it's on the mounting lug which sees least stress. I'd be putting a claim in with them for that though. ****** muppets they are.

shadow - nice Reed! That is one of the transition models where it has the new oil holes (there is one in the slide, too, right?) but the old meatball spindle and four-hole base. Crisp looking jaws and slide lines, looks like that thing sat unused for quite awhile. Great score, do you plan on cleaning it up at all or going directly into service?

The loop is broken/missing making the end slip when the lever is squeezed. The Record 34 and 36 have a looped end.

I found a photo of a Parkinson on the web without a looped end :headscrat . Not sure if that had a broken spring too.

I heated the broken end to make a new loop, but its so rusty that it just snaps off everytime making the spring shorter and shorter

I'll have to order the eBay spring and see if works

Haven't seen this before! It's actually something I'm going to give a little thought to, certainly a great way to keep the anvil from getting used. Would love to see Wilton 800S and a baby :D

Not only the Prentiss's have crack issues, these two Reeds I pulled out have the crack issue too. I am going to line these guys up with the Prentiss's one day and braze them all. I'll be a pro when I am done.

Thanks, Zoomie! I know you're not selling but I would love to see the feeding frenzy on eBay for that combo.

KMS - the more I am learning the more I see I totally lucked out with the Prentiss 98 slide not being cracked, although some reading indicates it is purely cosmetic.

For those of you around the Lowell MA area, there is a Columbian #804 (a somewhat enigmatic little vise) for sale for $50 on CL.

http://boston.craigslist.org/nwb/tls/4968595445.html

Bench Vise - $50 (Lowell)

00h0h_ltsbG77J6vm_600x450.jpg

Bench Vise $50 B/0

I think it's priced a little high for a 4" welded plate vise, but these seem to be fairly rare, so I'll let you decide.

There's only the one picture in the ad, so I don't know if the decal on the other side or on the jaw survived.

Thank you all for the warm welcome :)

Here are a few photos of some of the other vices I have.

Record No.1 3" jaws, with a thick coat of Hammerite .

Record 1Ton 4" jaws with rather terrible white lettering :shocking:).

Record No.2 3.5" jaws I restored this one a long time ago, and have been using this as my main vice on portable bench because of its compact size. :)

Record 34 4.5" jaws. Bought this sometime ago just because it had a swivel base. Plus it was cheap :D

Record 36 6" jaws - I left this unpainted as I like the raw look.

Herbert revolving vice -missing flat and pipe jaws. 3" one side and 2" on the other. I also left this unpainted because I like the bare steel look. This was very rusty with patches of green with a red face plate.

Record 55 woodworking vice. 6" jaws/width. Got this free, and haven't had the need for it yet.

Parkinson 8F 5" jaws. I have the jaws. I bought this on Sunday. It was very, very rusted. It'll need a new handle/tommybar and a new spring for the quick release.

Does any UK member know where I can source a replacement spring? :headscrat

Thanks for looking :D :3gears:

Those are nice pieces!

Interesting, thanks for the pics. I think that is one of the earlier/nicer ones. With the peened over handle ends and fully enclosed base.
