KMS - the more I am learning the more I see I totally lucked out with the Prentiss 98 slide not being cracked, although some reading indicates it is purely cosmetic.

Not so if you use the full extent of your vise, the crack splits out the square slider so much that on some vises like my 98 I have to C-clamp it to remove the Dynamic Jaw Support. This means the slider is rubbing the Static Jaw Support every time it is moved. Maybe drilling a hole will stop the casting knit line from continuing but the best fix is either brazing or welding and keep the crack from growing. The Reed I showed on the last page has really split and needs repairing.

Welcome to the gang, 02superduty - You've got (and in some cases, had) some really nice hardware there!! Do you have any of the Reed combination vises? I hear the 2 thru 4C are some of the nicest vises ever made. For a laugh, imagine this 140lb guy having to move the swivel version of the 58 (a 98) without help of a forklift or anyone else.

A 2C is my everyday vise and am currently looking to upgrade to a 4C they are definitely stout and take a beating without so much as a flinch

Not only the Prentiss's have crack issues, these two Reeds I pulled out have the crack issue too. I am going to line these guys up with the Prentiss's one day and braze them all. I'll be a pro when I am done.

Let me know when you are ready, I have a 105 reed the same way

shadow - nice Reed! That is one of the transition models where it has the new oil holes (there is one in the slide, too, right?) but the old meatball spindle and four-hole base. Crisp looking jaws and slide lines, looks like that thing sat unused for quite awhile. Great score, do you plan on cleaning it up at all or going directly into service?

I don't remember seeing one, I'll have to look again. No real plans for it but couldn't leave it when it was only $25.

Reed's higher tolerances become a problem here. A little while back I went to look at a 4" reed, ended up having a good 4" crack going up the back of the slide. You couldn't open it more than half way. When the split happens residual stresses from casting/machining in the slide cause it to spread further.

Last year, this appeared and vanished on ebay.co.uk for 350GBP


The one in front is a 6" Record 112 vice for purposes of scale...when a Coke can just isn't enough.
It was IDed as a 518, but Record didn't make a 518....
No. 518 1/2 : 8 1/2 inch jaw, 12 inch opening, 5 1/2 inch depth, weight: 265 lb.
15 pounds heavier than the No.49....
So, they are out there, in the fog....... Hiding behind the unicorn

Interesting, I have seen other Record models that 1" size bigger vise adds maybe 10-20 lbs. In this case between a 518 & a 518 1/2, that extra 1/2" on the jaws is 82 lbs more vise!

My 6" vise does not have Poland on it. Not the best pictures but all I have on my phone.

CW: I don't recall seeing Poland on the side of any of the Bison or FPU vices. here's a couple pictures of my 3 inch FPU and i can't remember exactly where i bought it. i do remember it came with a workbench and from one of my older clients a few years ago and when i handed it to Balane to tune up i remember him saying it was one of the nicest and smoothest working vices he'd worked on.

Best of luck finding the Record 518.5. at 260 pounds would it be your biggest vice?

Zoomie: thanks for picture of 8 inch Wilton with the baby on it's back. funny a guy with Nuts as his handle is saying you have a vice for vises. keep posting pictures of your sea of Tetanus as you can and those Reed C series vises you just restored look great.

Nuts: if i remember correctly you have a different type of steel addiction that are a lot bigger than vises and they have wheels on them.

Yes. They do have adjustable gib. One of, if not the nicest vises I have ever used.

They sound like it! I know bison lathe chucks are very good, so I'm not surprised their vises are. Definitely have to grab it if I ever see one!

Ahh yes, here's that little toolmakers vise I mentioned. My dad is currently making some brass jaws for it. This was the first year exam project for an apprentice machinist at the local navy dockyard. Kinda a cool little thing. Probably going to be used for small parts on the drill press.


Sitting on a 4" record. Very nicely made little project!
