Fraggles: i need to set the color on my laptop because every time you guys from across the pond post a red vice it looks orange. nice work and thought it was a nice Harley Davidson colored vice until reading your post.

Joe & Bagged: BTW your vise restorations are awesome and since you live so close you'll have the buyers talking about them and comparing soon.

VA: I vote you keep the chains because you are unique and the "one and only", but if you can cut down a huge walnut tree and handle your wife's furry then fire up the chain saw and the file for all the chain teeth you will wear out.

Whilst I've been mirror polishing my recent Record 36, my wife bought me a cheap Record 3 that needed tidying up. This has 4" wide jaws.

This was a trial to see what a red and black combination looked like

Nice job Joe! What is the deal with the chain on the stump? For moving it?

Outlaw, the stump used to belong under a 120lb Vulcan anvil my buddy sold. The chains held it in place. I bought the stump because it was cool, has ss bands and chains which i do use when moving it.

Thanks Drives, I'm pretty excited to finally get started on this. Naked vises aren't really my bag so I'll be painting it. But I did include a naked pic for you fresh out of the ****** tank.

Here's another # found on the bottom of the slide, another 08 same as on the back of the jaws.

I wondered if the type of machine marks in the slide are any indication of the manufacturer? Or are the different makes pretty much all machined with the same type of marks.

Econ: keep posting those pictures and since your vise isn't very common take a ton of pictures and maybe start its own thread and we can keep guessing who made those Craftsman 519x series vises.

yours should have a date stamp on the top of the slide more towards the static jaw instead of the end where those machine marks are. do you see a date and what is it or have you already mentioned that?

Picked this one up this morning for a few pounds.

Can't see a makers name at the moment.

Unusual shape for the UK.

Appears to be a nice casting

4" jaws that open 7"

Not original colour, believed to date from the 40s/50s

That has similarities to an Irimo, so likely some company over that way, if not an Irimo itself.

Heres a Reed 4C handle ive been working on. Sleeved the screw, it rocks. The screw is threaded to accept a ball detent setup as well. This will be the 4C to end all 4Cs. I still have to make two brass washers for bump stops.

Drives I don't know if I mentioned it earlier but it is stamped 3-54.

Thanks drives. I have the week off from work so I can finish a few house projects to make my wife happy. Then I'll be able to kick it into gear and finish a bunch of vises.

And I think what you are saying is that you want me to bust out my dslr and tripod and take and upload some real pictures.

Not much vise-hunting action here for the last few months. Then this evening I checked CL and got a hit on this one within 9 minutes of it being posted:



Not to far away, only a 35 minute drive. Price for vise and stand was $50. The stand base is filled with concrete. The date on the slide is 7 - 49.






Needless to say I am very happy! I love this style of Craftsman vise.

Huh? Cheater pipes are about the only thing that makes a vise handle susceptible to future bending. I prefer to straighten them with a BFH cold, but wouldn't hesitate to use some heat if I thought I needed it or it would help.

i took these with my cell and the guy next to me had about a 20 inch lens on his camera. Snoqualmie falls and lots of stumps for those vises i have lined up to restore.

ALL: i'm selling all my 100 pound and over vises and buying nothing but 2 inch jaw and less ones that weigh less than 10 pounds. my storage bills and back and wallet will thank me later.

Will do drives. Thanks for the compliments. I've learned a lot from all the guys on the vise thread and my thanks to everyone. Ask anyone I know, I always research a lot for anything I do, which usually makes all my projects go slow. But at least that way I usually don't mess things up.
Photography is another one of my hobbies I like to play around with. I just don't have time to practice much.
Next vise restore is probably going to be a Parker 974 swivel. I'm supposed to pick up a match to this one that I already have. I think it's painted the same color too. At least this way I can sell one without regret.

TJ: i forgot to mention that your shipping methods would get every vise (vice) to it's destination like it was sent and have a happy new owner. of course if the new owner had the tools to get it out of your packaging. very nice and again nice job on your first vise restoration. if you want to put up those pictures on the vise repair 101 thread as another good example of how to ship a vise that would be great or i saved them and i'll put them up later if you don't have time.

Jreb: forget about the price which i'm sure you know you didn't overpay i do like those Craftsman 519x's. congrats

Bagged: have fun this week buying and restoring vises and looking forward to see if you like restoring a Parker.

I haven't been vise hunting too much lately, but I ran into some stuff this weekend, accidentally, and I couldn't say no...

I got this Versa Vise, it apears to have never been mounted, just a little wear from storage over the years and it came with the "under table flush mount base", along with the regular base and pipe jaws. Also got a Wilton 450S covered in black paint, a Reed #104 in good shape, a near mint circa.1903 48" Cone Mandrel, a small Sawyers anvil, 3 blacksmith hammers, a bottom fuller hardy and a 12" Rigid pipe wrench...
So I'll just show you the Versa Vise, it is clean!

Zoomie: I've got to get me one of those Versa Vises. yours has pipe jaws which i'm not sure I've seen and i'd love to see a video or how that under the bench mount works with that vise.

also Maclin was selling finger savers on Ebay for $5 a pair shipped but i think his wife isn't doing well and he's moving so i couldn't find his ad. maybe Oldie knows.

in this thread someplace we were talking about O rings from a trucks brakes or something like that and i'll have to find those posts because they came in all sorts of colors.

Outlaw just mentioned on the vise repair 101 thread that he uses big plumbing O rings for his Parker vises.
