Best Air Hammer

Who makes the best air hammer? For heavy duty automotive type work.
Exhaust stuff, removing kingpins, general destruction, etc. . .
I assume it needs to be a "long barrel" style, but what brand?
I have heard CP Industrial, Mac, and Snap On from different people.
I am looking for the most "hitting power".
Anybody have any favorites?

Snap On. I have one that I have even used to break concrete in a fence post hole with a long bit. Worked like a charm.

That is the thread I was looking for. I have searched several times but not with the " ". Without them, there are many results that were on different subjects.

Anybody else have opinions, experiences with a certain brand?

I really like my CP714, its a heavy duty hammer but you have to decide if a $250 hammer is for you.

I've been really happy with my IR 121; haven't found anything that it couldn't help with ..

do some research, you will find Ingersoll rand is one of the best... any of s/o and macs air tools are ade by them... you could have same tool for a bit less money...

You are correct that many Mac tools are made by IR, You are wrong about Snap-on though almost every air tool with the SO name on it is designed and made in house by them.

I have the Mac AH750K and it has done everything I need for cars and light trucks. I hope this is helpful.

I can not argue about all of the air tools, but i do know the air ratchets are made by ingersoll rand.... I own a ingersoll 109xp and coworker has a snap on FAR72C... the only variance between them in ine has a industrial finish on the ratchet head while his has the typical snappy high polish chrome... everything else is the same...

please keep in mind that i am just using it as one example.... and am sure there are more....

basic contex of my post is that a little bit of research can save a lot of money...
if you are using it professionaly it might be worth spending the extra and getting snappy/mac just because of their it might be easier to get the to help with warranty issues if they come up ..

just my 2 cents worth

Many of the ratchets on the market have interchangable parts but IR does not make any ratchets for Snap On. (or air hammers)

My dad CP 714 bought in 1965 still kicks like a mule and the IR 121 to replace/second duty the CP714 kicks like mule also. Our shop senior tech uses a C-Man air hammer bought long time ago for all his work still to this day.

I've been really happy with my IR 121; haven't found anything that it couldn't help with ..

Same here, makes short work of anything I've turned it on. Get the quick change collet, it makes bit changes a lot easier.

as hilarious as it sounds, I have a HF one, I've had it for years, has sat in a box since i moved, pulled it out the other day, havent touched it since 00 and has never been oiled, worked like a charm, oiled it, works good. I see they went on sale for 4.99 the other day...for that price...haha. I know I know, HF *****.

Prefers Mac long barrel had for about 12 years now and still going strong . Im a diesel/heavy truck and equipment mechanic by trade .

My dad has a has a import "harbor freight " style and honestly for the money ... it's ok for general use and if it broke who cares ... well my dads is older then my mac and still going strong.

the cheap bits though thats another story altogether . buy better ones they do last longer and just make sure whatever one you buy it has the universal chuck /stem diameter i think its .409 or something like that ?

This is the hammer I use, a Snap-on PH3050:

It is definitely the most powerful air hammer I've used and 99% of the time I actually have the power dialled back to some degree.

It's very nice tool but it was quite pricey. The only other thing I would add is that with a good air supply and the power wide open, these things will really eat through the bits in a hurry.

Here's one even more than that, this one uses .498 chisels instead of the .401 that most air hammers use. Looks like the more expensive one is more heavy duty & the cheaper one is for more general work.

That reminds me of another point. .401" bits are much, much easier to find than .498 bits.
