As you're reading it visualize me staring as a much younger Cary in the upcoming "Beltsville Shell - The Movie".

Through the magic of Hollywood and lots and lots and lots of makeup it could happen..................nah, never gonna happen!!!!!

Enjoy the read, it's a fun time.

I'm in Motherwell, I had a chuckle that the book is so well travelled but is read by 2 people 15 miles apart in Scotland

We've been invited to display the Mark VIII in Dearborn at a Ford event on Friday, July 17. If any of you are Ford retirees or current employees, I think this event is for you. Several of my relatives are Ford retirees, so I hope they'll be able to come out to this private display/event.

dcm5652 - It was nice meeting you - was it at Warren, OH, or a meet near Cleveland? The car hasn't changed much, although it has more miles (a bit over 18K) since I drive it to meets.

We'll be at the LCOC Mid-America meet at Hickory Corners in MI. That will be my last official show with the Mark VIII. I don't do it for the trophies - it's just encouragement to keep the car in good shape. I've only lost a total of 1 point in the 13 years of showing the car. Indeed, it still looks brand new and the styling can't be matched by anything new. IMHO (although my 2014 Taurus daily driver has all the "bells and whistles", and more, of the 1993 Mark VIII and looks quite handsome as well)

I think the only other "show car" I might consider owning is a Spring Edition 1998 Mark VIII. I'm not partial to the 2nd gen Mark VIII nor the color of the Spring Edition car - it certainly isn't as eye-catching as the 1st gens - but, with only 113 of the Spring Editions produced, I would consider a low mileage, one owner, no sun roof if possible, reasonably priced one with no mechanical or other issues. With such restrictive requirements, I doubt it will happen.

Chris,
That's really great news that you will be here in July. The annual PDC Car Show is a great event for Ford employees, retirees, friends and just plain car lovers. As a still active employee who attends this event each year I will definitely look forward to seeing you and the Mark there in person.

Motherwell! Maybe I should quick over to you and have a second read before it continues ;-)
We should meet and swap 1930s shop resto stories.

Chris I met you, Thomas, and the Mark VIII at the meet in Chatt. Tenn. That was a fun and interesting meet. I now have 5 Mark V's, 2 79 Collector Series and 3 77 Luxury Group, and still can't get any of them to a Lincoln meet, being retired I have less time now than when I was working.

Ah Ha! Thanks for the reminder! Chattanooga was a great meet. I hope you get at least one of your cars to a meet soon.

And we definitely know about the retirement conundrum - busier in retirement than when working! How did we ever find the time to work? But it's all good - generally doing things we want to do in our own time.

We'll be riding our U.S. Plated motorcycle near there tomorrow on our way up the east coast of Scotland. It's part of a large loop of the UK that we are currently doing. It's amazing how a follower of this thread can catch up with the book across the pond.

Stuff like that happens frequently in The Center of the Universe! The "6 degrees of Separation" is more like "2" around here. Now that is freaky.

Tim, that is very cool indeed. As a fellow Scotsman, I envy your trip. Scotland, especially the Highlands, is some of the most beautiful real estate on Planet Earth!!

Very early this morning our neighbors got a very good look at...

...this rather large rig that was parked in front of our house.

It was picking up the VR-4 and taking it to its new home.

The driver looked it all over very carefully from top to bottom...

...then he covered the floor mat and seat for protection.

Once the mirrors were folded in...

...it was loaded up and headed to an anxious new owner. While I'll certainly miss it, I'm quite happy with it's new home. It should be receiving excellent care.

Up next I'm getting ready to let go of one of the Impala Super Sports a bit later this month. I really don't need 4 of them! :dunno:

Thomas,
I thought maybe this story would end with you talking the driver into leaving behind that Camaro SS on the top rack!

Yes, as I ate my bowl of cereal and checked my email, I looked out the window and saw the big orange truck out front of the Payne house. Since Tom and I had talked Saturday, I knew what was going on. Looks like they handled things very well, and the car will arrive in pristine condition. That is my house in the back round in the picture where the driver is laying down inspecting the car.

No, MacTexas. When the house sells, no moving van will be needed. Stuff will just move across town via our cargo van, small load by small load. The process started in May of 2013 when we first put the house on the market. Declutterring has been going on since then. Now we're just waiting for our buyer to sell their home before we can close on this one. We're still living here and I really don't want to empty too many things out while the house is still being shown (sake is contingent on them selling theirs). Our "transition house" where we'll be living until the new house is built (hopefully completed by the end of the year if everything goes according to plan) is out next to the 1930s auto shop. I sure hope we won't have to be there through winter 2015/16.

rmalkow2 - we're trying to reduce the "fleet" strategically. though a '69 Camaro SS would be a good choice. No trading or buying anything new in the foreseeable future. The race team is moving in to the barn June 1, so we definitely need the space in there for a couple months.

HOTFR8 - K.I.S.S. (and simplify) are both part of the plan.

nitro crew chief - that was quite the rig, wasn't it? I've never seen a tractor rig that large. It looks like he takes care of business very professionally. And we'll miss being across the street from you, but it's just a hop-skip-and-a-jump to our new digs. We may even see each other more often when we move to the other side of town! That seems to be how things work.

Thomas,

Please let us know when you put the Impala SS up for sale, I'm sure there are GJ members who may be more than casually interested (hint hint)!

Amitygravel - yes, we should be hanging around the Hot Rod Power Tour at Parkland College on Sunday, June 7. They should pull into town mid-afternoon for an over night stay. I may be volunteering with "registration" because they asked local car clubs for assistance. We should know more details closer to the day. Hope to see you out there. Pray for nice weather in the meantime!

Chris and Thomas,

I know you two are off on a very romantic holiday this weekend and I don't want to disturb it in any way. However, I believe 25 May 2015 is your 40th wedding anniversary and I wanted to offer congratulations and a wish for many many more! :)

Happy 40th Anniversary!

Thanks so much for remembering, Bob. Yesterday was sooo busy with our club picnic/potluck at the shop (0ver 30 people and lots of great cars), that it was nice to have a lazy day together. We had a lovely day taking the Corvette out for breakfast with friends old and new. Then we watched the Indy 500. Then we took the Mark 8 out for an evening cruise and dropped in to see some friends (it was her birthday). Not a lot of hoop-la. Then topped the day off with a movie at home. A great day with my favorite (one and only) guy.
(Who knew 40 years could pass by that quickly!)

Bob, let me echo Chris' thanks. Yesterday was our extremely busy day.

It was the 4th annual car club, "Picnic With The Payne's"...

... out at the shop.

This was the lull...

....before the storm. Perfect weather for all the old cars and a wonderful day to spend with friends. Today was relatively low key compared to that.

Hard to believe that it was 40 years ago, in 1975, a certain young lady took a gamble on me and said "I do" to spending the rest of her life with me! So as she said, today was filled with Corvette's, Mark VIII's and Indy 500 racing with a little smooching along the way. ;) Am I a luck guy or what? TLC

Love struck Thomas :eyecrazy:

Congrats to both of you and if you want a good rib recipe for the next event you have just say so. You can also do brisket the same way and it comes out so tender the meat falls apart. Just did some short ribs and have been enjoying them this weekend. If you've got a smoker you only need to watch it for the first couple of hours then wrap it and just keep the fire going as low as possible for 8-10 hours.

Austin Healey Air Hose Reel

Many thanks again everyone. I know I've been negligent posting my projects on here and if you haven't given up on me yet, here's another one recently finished.

A little background first. I met a fellow airman at Continental Airlines in 1989, who had purchased a 1963 Austin Healey 3000 a couple of years earlier. That would be...

...this car. It was an extremely rusty car, but complete and in need of a total restoration. Being the auto enthusiast that I am, we quickly established a common bond. Through the years he would keep me informed as to his progress on the car. Then a year or so before I retired, he told me for safety reasons he had replaced all the original wire wheels with new ones and would I like one of the old ones. Of course I would!

So this is what I received from him last year; a complete assembly consisting of a rim and hub, a spindle and knock off spinner. The rim and spindle in turn were taken to my good friend Rick at R&B Powder Coat who did...

...their normal good work sand blasting and powder coating the rim and spindle silver. Note on the spindle...

...they didn't coat the splined or threaded portion of the spindle. That's where the rim hub slides onto the spindle and the knock off threads on the spindle to secure the rim.

Next I needed to mount the spindle to the wall. It needed to be spaced out from the wall approximately 2 3/4" so the rim would clear the wall. Going to my lumber room...

...I looked in the area where I keep short boards.

I found a suitable plank of 2 1/4" thick hickory and some 4 quarter (1" thick) solid walnut.

The hickory was the proper thickness and it was checked to see if it was larger enough to mount the spindle.

Using the 20" Delta band saw it was cut to rough size...

...using the Yates American jointer 2 sides were trued up and then the table saw was used to cut it to final size.

The same was done for the walnut. After the surfaces were jointed to smooth them, when the two were stacked on top of each other it gave me a 3" thick mounting surface for the spindle.

I wanted to use lag bolts to secure the spindle to the wall stud. I could use one of the existing factory wheel stud holes in the spindle but needed to drill a new hole on the other side to keep the lag bolts centered on the wall stud. The arrow points where it has been center punched, ready to drill.

Here's the spindle on top of the wood spacers. Note the newly drilled hole.

A little dark stain on the sides of the hickory...

...then a couple of coats of polyurethane on both boards was applied. Since the hickory slab was on the bottom, 2 holes were drilled and using a Forstner bit they were counter bored.

The counter boring recessed the lag bolt head so when the walnut board was placed on top...

...it would sit flat on the hickory underneath it. By keeping the lag bolts centered on the spindle I was able to lag screw to the 2X4 wall stud making everything very solid and secure.

The wheel rim was then placed on the spindle...

...and the knock off was installed to secure the wheel...

...to the spindle and the wall.

The result is a nice, neat and tidy installation with no mounting bolts visible.

And so now, after 26 years, I have a visible form...

...of that friendship that took root so long ago.

I've also got a swell 1963 Austin Healey air hose reel. :)

Thanks again everyone for your good wishes and patience. There is more to come.

I did a similar thing too after seeing someone else here on GJ who did it. Wish I could say it was my idea, but it wasn't.

Found three screwed up old American "Daisy" style mags super cheap on Craigslist - I think $30 for three of them - cleaned them up, painted the spokes and mounted using. A trailer spare tire holder from Harbor Freight.

Thomas, I think that that is quite possibly the nicest Austin Healey 3000 wire wheel hose reel that I've ever seen!

Next time I'm looking through my big ol' pile of discarded gold bars, if I find one of these (see picture) I'll be sure and send it to you to hang next to the A.H.(3000)W.W.H.R. It might make a nice companion piece!

Dan, those turned out exceptionally nice I'd say. Great idea and good work there!

Whoa Mike, now that would make a nice companion display with my A.H.(3000) W.W.H.R. wouldn't it? Dig deep into those gold bars of yours and see if you can find it.

BTW, here's a better before picture of my friend Steve's '63 Austin Healey 3000 that my rim came from...

And here is that same car pictured a few months back with new wheels on it, almost finished.

It took him over 25 years to do the whole restoration...

...but I'd say it was worth the wait.

...and this guy can fly large aircraft too! Not only does he have talent, he's just a super nice guy to boot. I've been waiting an awfully long time for him to finish it.

He'll be displaying the car this summer at the Watkins Glen race track, Saturday, July 25th at the Vintage Grand Prix race. If you see him, tell him "Hi and thanks again for the wheel" for me would you? :)

Hey guys, I've spent weeks on and off reading this thread. I'm at pg 130 right now, and I've been awed since pg1. I figured that eventually I'd catch up to the end of this and then join in but then I couldn't wait to post up something I thought would be cool in this garage/shop.

A few years back I bought a bunch of lock sets for my new house from Rejuvenation, and since then I get their catalogs in the mail and all sorts of email alerts for sales. I usually delete those, since I'm not in construction mode right now, but this one just jumped out at me:

Well, Thomas, Your wire wheel hose rack beats my Sprint Car wheel hose rack. Even if mine was bent during racing action and autographed by the owner/driver. Nice work!
