I have an old Parker on the hook, but it has a broken mounting tab. Its half there, other half is missing, so not completely gone but definitely missing half. 6" combo vise, otherwise decent shape. How much would you penalize the price for the damage?

how much is it?

JRobb: you didn't say whether your Parker is a swivel or a non swiveler and i'm guessing it's a non. yes? at worst case pick it up for a parts vise if the price is ok. i see welded vises for sale all the time and i'm guessing they sell at some price, but i wont pay much for them. I've seen some awesome repair work that you can barely see the damage if you have the right tools and talent but i'm guessing the vise still sells for less than one that isn't broken or welded. also the members that have done that fix either have a mill, lathe and CNC or a friend that has one or all of them and some free time.

if it's a swiveler then how much does a new replacement swivel base cost? i think Balane put a Wilton swivel base on his big Parker so there are options.

BTW do you have another more recent picture of your dog for your avitar and has he recovered from his injury? he doesn't look very happy with the cone on.

TOP: i just noticed you offering up your first born for a vise and maybe any vise. hopefully he or she will come around because they do eventually. is that the parent of your grandson that you probably wouldn't sell for a million dollars?

All I can say is I recognized Drivesitfar's tongue in cheek reply about TRJeff's green Wilton and then got to laugh at all the responses that didn't catch it.

I find it a bit.... disturbing, that the "oldest" member on here, can discuss
the most arcane of facts about vises, yet knows who Luke Skywalker is.

Nuts

Not that surprising when you consider that Luke and Leia are nearly senior citizens themselves now.

Oh, and - Han shot first.

Hi folks,

I'm chatting with a guy who has an American Scale No. 79 and stand for $350. He didn't know the static jaw swivels, and is now eyeing the pin in the back with interest, a can of WD-40, and a mallet.

I assume that the pins in these are straight friction fit and not threaded like an Athol I have.

Thrum: pretty sure it's just a pin, but some vise owners threaded theirs. i think Wilton actually threaded some of their old swivel jaw pins before leaving the factory. the AS #79 is about 190 pounds and would fit right in with your other nice vises if you can find a way to bring it home. get the hammer out of the guy's hand and bring it home and make a little nut and bolt press of sorts to pop it out from below.

Beat: if you need any help with the Wilton or the Columbian post up your questions on the vise thread. the old wiltons are pretty straight forward, but the pin or pins holding the vise nut in are sometimes a bear to get out or punch through. take your time and use PB or Kroil to help if it's not coming easily.

BB: thanks again for keeping up on the Wilton dating thread i started and for getting my humor.

ALL: for all those with a wilton bullet, cadet or tradesman prior to 1970 please post. or if you have an older Wilton vise with a stamped date newer than 1970 please post them too. we had a baby bullet with Chicago on its side stamped in the 1980's.

BTW i also like Star Wars especially the old ones that i still watch on occasion while i'm working out. the last 3 they made i can't say i have watched more than one or two times, but aren't they making a new one with the 70 year old actors. Oldie is that one of the new characters?? :D

I am wondering if someone around the Danbury CT. area could do a fellow GJ member a favor? I bought a 4" Rigid vise in Danbury and it is local pick-up only. I have a Fed Ex account. I just need it picked up, stuck in a box, wrapped with stretch wrap, strapping tape, and a shipping label attached, dropped of at Fed Ex, (Fed Ex Kinko's). I will provide the stretch wrap and heavy strapping tape, No rush. Or, maybe another way to get it to Minnesota. Thanks! David

Thrump,---I bought a #79 from a fellow off CL, and asked him if the rear jaw swiveled.---Just wanted to know if it was froze.---He said no it doesn't swivel.---I asked him if he had ever had the pin out and he said no.---I told him the pin comes out and the rear jaw swivels.---He said , no it doesn't, it never has, and it's not supposed to.---I said I think it does.---He said no it don't, I'm not sure what the pin is for, but I'm sure the jaw doesn't move.---I said alright, maybe you are right, I'll take it anyway.---He wanted $300.00 for it.---It was in excellent condition.---So I paid him.---No use to piss him off.

The Parker is offer/trade so no price yet. It is swivel. 289 1/2 model. A bolt should hold it as the tab isn't completely gone.
Dog is perfectly happy. I'll get a nicer pic ;)

JRobb: The Parker you are looking at does have a swivel so if you are planning on using it as is another swivel base with a toasted upper part might show up. or i think Balane used either a 600 or 800 Wilton swivel base that works great on his big Parker which might be another option.

that is a nice big Parker with pipe jaws and are the pipe jaws there or in Area 51 like the rest of them?

happy to hear your dog is doing better.

Beat: thanks for taking out your dynamic and posting the date stamped on the slide for our data that Bluebolt is keeping track of.

Jrobb316: I happen to have a spare Parker base off a 386 I'm junking....

Now the question is, does your 289 1/2 have an intact garter I could borrow for a short while? I'd like to see what the local foundry can do for bronze casting a copy or two.....cost dependent of course.

I have been lurking for a bit trying to glean some information prior to starting my first ever vise restoration.
I am attaching several pictures of a vise I found at an Estate Sale a couple of months ago. I picked it up for $20 (I hope I didn't spend too much!)
One of the problems I'm facing is that I don't have a clue who made this vise. Can anyone help me identify it? Thank in advance.
Fernando

Its jaws are 3.5" inches wide

I had no idea a GJ member was selling this one.

Do I get an "spread the word discount"? :)

Just kidding. I'd definitely bid on this, but I'm looking for a 1765.
