Wrench: thanks for posting that link of Ritzbliz's fix on a broken or busted off foot of his big Reed 4C. that was his first post.

Ritz: if you are around and have time would you mind posting up some of those type of pictures showing how you make a handle on the 101 thread?

Farmer: You bought a Wilton made in USA so i don't think you did that bad at $40, but yours is one of their less expensive older open screw vises so a medium and maybe a more so a light duty vise. if you are happy that's all that counts. are you?

TOP: :D:D

WED4: so what vise did you buy? any chance you have some of that pile of vises you own on a shelf or several shelves yet for a new family picture. from what i remember you have not only a ton of vises you also have some rare and special ones. any pictures you want to share please do when you wish to.

I mostly will be using it for working on snowmobile stuff, so I don't need a monster. If I need bigger, I'll head over to the farm shop. If not, on CL is goes.

Farmer: mount it on your bench and use it until you find something better. one thing you need to do is put some grease or oil on the screw because it's pretty dry. also when you have something in it's jaws you might want to throw an oily rag over the screw to keep shavings and junk from getting inside your vise.

Thrum: not that it matters, but i think i posted that vise and add maybe 6 months ago because it is interesting and i think he was asking $1300. i didn't open the ad so is he still asking that much?

zoomieport,

If you have a 1755 or 1765 around the end of July or early August, I might save you the shipping hassle and drop by to pick on up. I'll be in LaGrange Indiana for family visit. Sometimes I even fly into Battle Creek/Kalamazoo, but this time I'm driving.

Do you gents see welds at the rotating base of this? Looks like they are on both sides. Worth snagging/saving/fixing for $85? 5" jaws. Thoughts?

Personally, a bit of weld like that wouldn't bother me unduly. It cab be a bit of a c ow to clean up weld nicely to make it look almost as if it wasn't there, but at least the runs aren't too long.

With all the swivel bases we tend to see welded up, it does sort of prove the theory/preference of us non-swivellers. :D

Racin That's a nice vise. flips and swivels, right? Plus the pipe insert is a huge plus for that model. Price range for a keeper is a good buy !

As Fetters stated the welds can be removed and cleaned up. The issue is why it was welded in the first place??? Is it merely missing it's swivels locks or a more serious issue? This model can be bolted down with or with out the swivel base.

Twertsy: That Starrett combo vise is made to not swivel so if the swivel base is broken or welded or not working you can take it off and mount it to a bench or a stand. fair price for it and yes like TOP says it's a keeper if there are not any welds or cracks in the main part of the vise that we can't see in the picture.

Bagged: it's missing a chunk of the vise under the screw at the back of the vise. sounds like you didn't pay much for it so at the worst it's a good parts vise.

Cool, thanks Drives. I'll pick her up today then! None of the other pics show any further mods/damage. I've been looking for a Starrett/Athol for a while but they keep popping up at several hundred $. I talked with the guy and he says yes, it's welded but the welds didn't stick. So, it should just take a bit of grinding to get it back to original status.

Thank you!:lol_hitti

Zoomie, great looking vise and the whole ebay ad looks great. With 5 days to go and already $280 bid, you are looking pretty good yourself.

I am pretty sure the person that got out bid on TJ's will be all over this. If it was more than one person that was in it close to the end, you could be looking at a big pay day.

Best of luck

So the 289 1/2 Parker also has a welded rear jaw insert. Looks like the pins are gone so it doesn't look like anything else is broken. For the price I think it's a good deal. I can part it out and get my money back if all else fails, but I think it could be restored. Pipe jaws and garter are in tact. Slide has seen some anvil action but it's not cracked or too chewed up. They don't come around everyday so I think I'll go for it.

On the plus side it looks like whom ever did the welding, did a pretty crappy job so they should be easier to remove. :lol_hitti

I'd check it over very carefully for any other issues, because if the person that welded it wasn't smart enough to see that it can be bolted down without the base, then I don't have much faith in how they used it otherwise.

I was researching whether or not Athol EVER made anvils today and I came across the thread above.

Please do yourselves the favor of reading this page. I laughed 4-5 times and cried at the same time. Ahhh, so this is what they mean when they say that hindsight is 20/20.

Anvils but also vises. My favorite quote "most expensive vise I saw was $700 but it was over 400 lbs" !!!!!!:eyecrazy:

Picked up this Wilton a while back. Found it in an antique shop being used as a book stand. $24 on the tag. Convinced SWMBO that it should come home with me. Jaws are cracked and the handle is bent, but the balance is in good shape. Going to set it up as my main garage vise and put the craftsman 5.5" somewhere else.

Yes sir! I was going to put it on my garage work bench, but I might decide to put it in the snowmobile race trailer instead. Should be really handy in there.

I have been lurking for a bit trying to glean some information prior to starting my first ever vise restoration.
I am attaching several pictures of a vise I found at an Estate Sale a couple of months ago. I picked it up for $20 (I hope I didn't spend too much!)
One of the problems I'm facing is that I don't have a clue who made this vise. Can anyone help me identify it? Thank in advance.
Fernando

Its jaws are 3.5" inches wide

That's a decent looking little vise and $20 is fine. No help on the manufacturer though.

Those were sold under a number of different names including house brands (ex. True Value and the like). Check the left hand side of the slide bar towards the back for a stamp.

Bluebolt - Thank you. I wasn't really sure if it was any good.
ZKling - I was looking for some markings on the bar but couldn't make anything out (see close up), but your information is very helpful. Do you know if these came in a certain color? thank you.

Check the other side, left side as when facing the vise from the front. Starboard side one might say.

Regarding the 2 tab mini Prentiss on eBay

2 inch jaws...$96.75 winning bid

Did one of you fellows bag the little guy today? Looks like it went for a lot less than some were estimating. Maybe it WAS supposed to have a third mounting tab. :dunno:

I've been helping my dad organize and declutter his garage and found this. A craftsman 5243 vise. My dad's neighbor was throwing out a steel frame workbench and the vise was mounted to it. I took it apart and un-seized it quick. The base has one ear missing. The previous owner had put a bolt and bend it around the center bolt to prevent swiveling. I took it about and the vise swivels as it should. I want to replace he base for him. Anyone have one they want to sell?

Does look like a weld, but flip the slide over and look from underneath. You'll know for definite then. Wouldn't worry about it personally though. That looks a sound enough repair.

If anyone is interested, I know a guy in the bay area who has two C-3s right now, both with no damage and original paint although they have been used in a shop. I can get them for about $500 each, let me know quickly please as he is going to be putting them on C.L.
