Twertsy: it could be a weld or just gunk because the top of the jaws don't have any marks from a BFH which is usually the cause. pull out the dynamic on it and turn it over and take a few pictures if you would and usually a welder that does that nice of a repair still doesn't clean up the inside so the weld should be seen.

even if it is welded like Fretters mentioned it's one of the nicer repairs we've seen and that Starrett #925 is a nice vise to own.

Lu: sounds like a great deal for some Wilton C3's and wish i had some extra fun money but i bought this yesterday which is a Versaclimber 108 Lx. it's one of the best exercise machines made and hopefully i can get in better shape because moving all this big steel has me gasping for air some days.

My first Prentiss Vise, picked it up for $8 at a garage sale this morning. Does anyone know what the hole on top is for?

It's a hardy hole made for holding hardy tools (anvil tools).

It can be useful in limited tasks, but most of the time hardy tools should be used on an anvil with hot metal.

Bagged: not that it matters that much on that broken vise, but can Ebay sellers do that?

Dngr: the hole is for a hardy and probably a cutter. cute little Prentiss and can't say I've seen that model before. nice find.

What is the proper color for a Wilton 835 with a birth date of 6-46?

What paint is left looks more like battleship gray.

It's in my truck. Along with another vise. If someone gives me a bundle for it tomorrow it may be gone. I contacted oldldh about having one. He has been looking on here for 23 months. They must be hard to come by. The original owner was a engineer and jack of all trades. So it was used but still looks pretty damn nice for it's age.

Working on a Union Parker and ran across this issue, the spindle was bent like a wet noodle. It worked because I never felt any issues opening and closing the vise. But leaving it like it was would cause excessive wear either in the nut or the threads. I am sure there is several ways to fix it but this is how I fixed this one. I was worried about breaking the thread by bending it cold so I made a three point setup on my vise. It took me several attempts but eventually I got it. I heated it to just under a dull red color.

Check out the two Parker spindles that were friction welded, Wilton grinds theirs off and sometimes it looks pretty rough. Pretty amazing how strong of a weld it is.

Thanks for sharing that method. I have a Parker spindle with a similar bend and I was wondering how I was going to straighten it.

The vise's from this weekends trip and from the last 3 weeks. And a lil load test on Fords tailgate. Besides the 11 bullets, there's a PVCo. 162, Morgan Chicago 40, Reed 104 R and a Prentiss Gypsy

Ok you officially need to see the doctor about your vise buying problem. Nice collection there!

Flippers are the best. I have a Wilton baby bullet in the mail coming to me to flip. I should be able to pay for at least one of my toolbox purchases this week with it.

Very funny Jake
All of you should know that a very similar practice is opening on the West Coast as well. This location is more convenient for those of you far from New England.
It will be staffed by a team of dedicated professionals standing by to rid you of your vices.
