Twertsy: it could be a weld or just gunk because the top of the jaws don't have any marks from a BFH which is usually the cause. pull out the dynamic on it and turn it over and take a few pictures if you would and usually a welder that does that nice of a repair still doesn't clean up the inside so the weld should be seen.
even if it is welded like Fretters mentioned it's one of the nicer repairs we've seen and that Starrett #925 is a nice vise to own.
Lu: sounds like a great deal for some Wilton C3's and wish i had some extra fun money but i bought this yesterday which is a Versaclimber 108 Lx. it's one of the best exercise machines made and hopefully i can get in better shape because moving all this big steel has me gasping for air some days.
