Well I got a monster today. I had said I was offered a 6" post vise, and I got it today, but not exactly. It's actually a 7 1/4" post vise! I'll have to get a bigger scale to weigh it, but I would guess somewhere around 200#. My morgan would look small beside it. Beautiful old one too. Hand forged, you can see where pieces were forge welded together. Judging by the fancy turned barrel and end cap, its factory made though, probably mid to late 1800s. The 4" is an equally fancy hand forged unit, that actually has a makers mark! Probably same era. I'll get some pictures.

Here it is. I'll get some better pictures later on. This thing is a beast! If any vise was made for being beaten with a sledgehammer, this is it! Even a little 30 pound post vise will happily take abuse that would hurt something like my morgan.

Nice torco. I really enjoyed doing the last one I had. And I think yours is the best vintage but has a few issues

No need to worry about bidding on this one balane. As a non-collector there won't be enough "meat on the bone" to flip. It's not crossing the Missouri river.

I have listed them on ebay for 5 days.
Second score of the week, a Parker 974 1/2. It was on my short list of sub 5", as now I have another of that collection, it will keep my 974 and 973 1/2 company. Paid $60 and also got a Wards open screw vise with it, package deal. I don't want it, i'll probably CL it for $10 - 20 to get rid of it. This Parker is in decent shape. Hercules must have used it and broke the swivel bolt off in the wedge. Some heat will get that out, i'll play with that at work tomorrow. I have an extra bolt and wrench so i'm good to go. Someone must have repinned the jaws at some time and did a really crappy job. This is a really heavy vise for being 4.5" jaws.

I have a bunch of wood vises. One like this but bigger. And one that was mounted to this bench but didn't belong. Plus about 5 more in different stages of completeness. Laying here and their in my mess of a garage. I saw a few today cleaning. I believe their are 2-3 in the basement. I think one is an Oliver missing the back strap.

Pinch: i like the places that you shop at and occasionally i find them open around me. i haven't found a 5198 yet so wanted to congratulate you. yours is the 3rd we know of and maybe the cleanest so far, but i have a question for you. there is a screw on my 5196's vise nut and either yours is missing or it's a different screw. can you take a look and maybe post up a picture of your 5198's vise nut to show either a screw in that hole or the threads where the missing screw should be?
nice find and just curious how you can have a craigslist ad running the same time as an Ebay auction. do tell or PM me if you would because I've seen others do that too?

Joe: some of the guys paint their vises and other tools and machines in small appliance cardboard boxes which might help you in the future until you set up a little paint booth in your garage. that way the wind doesn't blow all the paint around the yard and driveway when you are painting it and with the warm weather it probably doesn't need direct sun to dry. just a thought and sorry to see that happen because it looks like it would have been a nice paint job.
ALL: so i was doing my nationwide search for different vises sort of like trying to find the stores open that Pinch Point shops at and i found this vise. it doesn't look like a small vise and i'm not sure who made it. any ideas? also it looks like it might weight 150 pounds and would ship nicely on the pallet with the anvil sitting next to it that looks bigger.

Twertsy: I've never been a huge fan of those big old Cole vises and I've had a chance to buy them pretty cheap. i probably should buy one because they have a cool drill press attachment that can be used with them. as far as i know there was a spring that goes over the screw inside the jaw area that is sometimes missing and they are hard to beat up too bad, but look for cracks and welds too. how much?
Vintage: nice looking big Blacksmith vise and maybe look at TJ's blacksmith vise he posted a couple weeks ago that i think looked pretty similar.

I restored one a few months back. I like them because they rotate on a vertical axis. There's really nothing functionally different with a Cole vise as there is with a regular bench vise. Because of the way the body is cast, you may want to look closer for cracks. Also, there is a spring around the spindle that aids in opening the jaws, and likely the jaw movement will be stiff.
Edit: I picked up mine from a used equipment dealer for 80$. Sold it for $180.

Twertsy: I've seen them for less than a Benjamin and more and if you are ok with the price then your call. I didn't know they made them in different sizes so enlighten me (us) if you know they do. here's a picture i saved with the drill press attachment and i think somebody posted one this month on this thread if you want to see another one.

All I know is that if you google them, it appears their style / design changed over the years and there also appears to be different sizes. Could just be perspective though. What are the posts protruding from the base in the pics I posted for? Some I saw during research have them and some don't??

Twertsy: not sure that bar sticking out of the side is original to the vise. my guess is one of the prior owners has welded it on so he could attach it to a bench or maybe his tractor. like i mentioned i'm not a fan nor the expert on these and just giving you my 2 cents. maybe somebody else knows more, but they don't pop up often and are not talked about much here.
personally i'd save your money for a big anvil and a better vise since you tend to see them fairly often.
have you moved the ball up closer to your left heal so you can quick hooking? send me another video via email when you get a chance.
