Hey Grindstaffs,

Pictures would help. Check this link for the manual http://vintagemachinery.org/pubs/222/2202.pdf it appears like you have the same wiring as I do so I will link a picture so you can see what connects where. Mine is a 1/4 Hp not sure if there is a difference in wiring there. Check your wires going into the windings to make sure they are still attached my white wire was barely holding on and the insulation cracking off had it replaced and done.

I made a terrible drawing when I took my grinder apart, it might not help, but I'll put it here so I won't lose it.

Could be a decent deal for someone close to there . FYI the seller won't ship.

Here you go Grinds.

Ask the seller to take it to FedEx.

FedEx pack and ship will cost between $30 - $40.

Pay the seller an extra $20 for his trouble.

Sell off your grinder for parts to re-coup some of your expenses.

I'd pick it up for you, it's about 1 hr from me, but it would take more than $20 in gas.

Mike

Good find, Cypherian!

The relay pictured, however, is different than Grinds 397.19580 and mine (see below).

I measured the resistance of the winding/coil assembly, see drawing and table below.

I did not see that. Makes a huge difference. I do have a phase convertor but not really worth it to run it for a bench grinder.

I found this 6" wheel while helping my dad clean his garage. It seems to be some type of scotch brite pad. No labels or markings. Any thoughts?

I finally got a block. Actually, my father in law got it at an auction without knowing what he bought. It's a 397.19401, he paid $9, I paid him $15.

SKC: nice find and i didn't know that they made a commercial block in the 1/3 HP much less the 1/4 HP like you just found. It should have enough power for most jobs because the old 1/4 HP probably have as much power as today's 1/2HP's because they changed the way they measure HP now.

welcome to the block group and instead of just turning it on and using it you should take the wheels off and give them the ring test and if they pass put them back on and dress them to use for another 20 years.

i started a thread in the general tool section called grinder safety 101 that you might read a bit on if you want to see what these power tools can do if not used safely. i started it because i heard some guys have died from grinder stones breaking apart especially on the bigger grinders.

Bagged: let us know how you like using that scotch brite wheel on your block when you get a chance to put it on and use yours.

ALL: does anybody else own a 1/3 or 1/4 HP commercial block? i can't say I remember seeing one on here in a couple years or at all.

drivesitfar,
Thanks for the advice. I don't plan on just turning it on an using it. I am going to clean it up real good first and will certainly check the wheels before using as well. Right now one of the wheels has a mud dauber nest on the side of it :). My current grinder is a 1/6 hp Chinese Craftsman unit I bought about 6 or 7 years ago so I should a marked increase in performance.

SKC: my post was more directed at those lurkers reading our thread that are learning, but happy to hear you are going to check out your block and clean it up before using it. you WILL notice a lot more power and if the bearings are still in good shape it will hum like kinda like a Rolls Royce or nice car when it's tuned up.

if you have any questions about your block just ask and i'm sure one of us will have an answer or help if we can.

here's the link to the safety video and before you start reading it just know that there are some pretty graphic videos and photos on it.

WooHoo, my first "you ****"!
213 are you sure?

OK, then,

Repeat the following three times while facing true North during the light of a full moon: "I promise to use these Block grinders to do good. I will do all in my power to rescue, restore, and return to full duty any and all Blocks I encounter. Should I not be able to personally rescue any Block, I will do all in my power to alert the Block guild members of the existence of said Block."

Furthermore, you understand by posting in this thread, no person or persons shall be held responsible should you rescue so many Blocks that your cars have no room in your garage.

OK, that's all there is to it. This is your official warning, I mean acceptance into the Block guild.

Nice score!

Yup, You **** and I usually refrain from talking about someone's family, but so does your dad.

So I'm grabbing this for $25 so I can have the metal/glass shields. Now I'm going to have two 1/3HP grinders I need to sell or part out. Someone help my problem! These things are like magnets.

Also this guy with stand is available in Rhode Island if anyone needs it. I might be willing to go get it. The seller is asking $100.

Bagged: the blocks are only like magnets because you (and others on this thread) have your search and eye open for them. at that price for that block you can complain all you like all the way to the bank because the eye shields are worth that. hopefully it works good as is, but once you start complaining about having too many blocks is about the time they don't show up anymore. are you ready to expand your garage or go rent some secured storage space?

I've been looking for a 3/4 or 1 HP commercial block for a couple years now locally and if i find one great, but the little ones don't even pop up in my search and that's not just Craigslist.

DOC: well said and i'm sure SKC will willingly accept the honor of becoming a true block head and he'll probably have another block to post in the next 30 days while he's just barely finished cleaning up the first one.

cheers

Bagged: that search feature you have on your phone finds them all. I've never seen a imitation block like that before. you better buy it just so you can tell us what the difference is. :dunno:

No I'm all set buying that one. If it was closer I'd go look at it just to see it.
Now I'm only buying cheap blocks with metal/glass eye shields or the cone style light.

And maybe a 3/4 or 1 HP if one in good condition pops up.

Right now the highest amp block I have is the 1/2HP commercial 397.19440 which has 6.2 amps.

Farmall, is that thing going to the museum? Reasn I asked is I do not see any stones or wire wheels on it. In any case, nice job!

I just haven't gotten around to picking up the right ones (and spacers)

Nice job on that! I like the blue!

Thanks, just Rustoleum Dark Blue

Farmall great job on saving a nice block and the color combination is fantastic.

Thank you.

You guys probably can't see, but I used a bead of RTV to replace the old gasket around the eye shields (couldn't find a better replacement; it's well hidden). Hope that's alright!

Also, it's 56 this month. (6/59) :shocking:

I'd buy the 1/3 horse if shipping wouldn't kill it.
