VA & Zoomie: i hope you are saying the 800's are $710 each because according to my math off of Va's figures they are $7,100 each. Joke or real decent buy? when you say Wayfair do you mean WalMart or is there a Wayfair store?

cheers

:D On the subject of brazing, that Oxford unit made its way up here today. Seriously impressed with how stout those things are. First time I've seen one in the flesh, and I was surprised at just how heavy it is. Good job it's on castors. :D
Those Oxford units are renowned for their build quality and their weight! :) They will quite honestly go on for ever :) A lovely machine.

All the # 4's I've had or have all have four feet. And didn't pay over 100for any of them . Paid 40 for this one which is the last #4 I bought. For the one you are looking at It's missing a foot or the base is from another vise. The jaws have been changed and there won't be a date on the slide if it's a pat pend. fish hook

Sharp lookin vise.. What color is that that you used?

My Torco with a broken swivel base needs to get together with Gidge's vise to make 1 good one! It looked good until I got it home from the estate sale and realized one of the feet was totally broken off. I removed all three screws and didn't realize one of the feet didn't make the trip!

BLUEBOLTYeah that would be the righteous thing to do. I sold mine for 140.00 so make her an offer accordingly

These are very far and few between not popping up very often.... considering the last one popped only a few weeks ago (http://www.ebay.com/itm/EXCELLENT-SMALL-RARE-PIRAMIIT-BULLET-VISE-SWIVEL-TOOL-/161715534305) went for over $360 plus shipping and it just had a screw for the side knob I feel like I dun did purty good on this one for $35 plus shipping. :bounce:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/VISE-BENCH-MFG-BY-PYRAMID-/121685898353

I've poked back into the past posts about these and from what I can determine, they seem to be very well made copies of the Wiltons with a couple of extra features. One thing I'm not thrilled with is the one I just one does have some what look to be home made aluminum jaws. I'll have to see if they are decent when I get it in.

The other oddity is the different names cast into them. Pyramid and Pyramiit. The Pyramiit is not a casting defect that I can see from the photos of them. Just a bizarre different spelling. In just some basic and quick searching I've found nothing regarding their origins.

Only a few examples have surfaced that I can find. Maybe 3 or so like this one plus the double header that Blue Frog on here has.

Once I get it in my hands I'll take some good photos of it and post them.

I can see exactly why they have that reputation now. :D Still has the original, intact sticker on it too, which is always a nice perk. I've popped a few photo's of it in my projects thread in the vintage section. :) It had the oil changed back in '85 too, and has seen little use since, so I also know that I don't have to worry about changing that out either. I'm well chuffed with it.

Gidge is a lady? Didn't know.

More inclined to sell Gidge mine I have too many vises. And hand tools. And Craftsman block grinders. And cars.

I talked to a guy today who saw a pittsburgh automatic RR vise at a steel mill 15 years ago. He said he always wanted to go back and see if it was there but the mill shut down long ago. It had 10 inch jaws. He was not familiar with this site so I am sure he was not teling a wopper to me. Just more proof that there really is a big one hiding out there!!

Yesterdays find.

That tapper is nos and worth a lot. Awesome find by me... The Atlas xy table and vise were scraped with a razor blade. The slides were taken off and the ways were cleaned. It was put back together and the gibs adjusted until all side play was removed. Their is .02 backlash in the y and .01 in the x or vise versa.

Hollands 13 1/2

My sister found me an old Hollands vise at a garage sale. It's my first USA-made fixed base vise, and it's a pretty solid chunk of iron. Couldn't find much about Hollands, but I'm pretty sure they went out of business a long time ago. Model 13 1/2 with (you guessed it) 3-1/2" wide jaws.

Torn between two vise's... 956 parker for $235.00 50 miles away with possible other gems to be had or the elusive 5198 on ebay that may go 500 + . The Parker has been setting for a week. When I first contacted him he wouldn't budge off his price. 200 wouldn't be to bad but 150 would be even better. Not sure I can get him that low in just a weAk . I already have a 3 1/2, 4, 4 1/2 and a 5 " Parker. The 6" would be a nice addition. If I still had my 5195 and 5196 the 5198 would be hard to pass on, but they found new homes.:dunno: What would you do? :wtf:

Picked up the Cole vise today. This thing is in great condition, with everything intact and no cracks or welds. Cool vise

That's a tough call. The cman will be too rich for me, and I love parkers, so I'd go that route. That one looks clean too.

Jrobb I leaning hard that way my self. I have a auction in the morning to attend and if don't find enough to feed the rusty tool beast in me I may have to spring for the Parker. Parkers and Athols are my favs . Hard to pass on either. Besides I know I will just flip the Cman .... If there is any room left to do so.

Well I found a vise in the ditch on my way home from work today. I'll post some pictures later. Not my nicest vise, but seems like a decent one!

Well here it is. An old Schiller park wilton of some sort. All enclosed like a bullet, but it definitely appears to be one of wiltons lower end vises. I think it should be perfect for the one on a stand to live in front of the shop though! Be nice to keep some of the grinding out of the shop...

My guess is it probably fell off the back of a service truck.
Anyone know anything about these wiltons?

I would agree that there probably won't be much room to flip the 5198.

Good day today. Put my 2.5" Wilton on Ebay but like an idiot only did a 24 hour sale, but I already met my reserve :bounce:..then I decided to tackle my Reed 107. Already pinched my finger REAL good. What an absolute beast. Found it opens to 17".

Here it is broken down.

744 Maybe??? Not really sure. No cast in model numbers. I worked on one years ago. Not super common. as a flipper, well, it's still a W W WILTON. Surviving the ditch ride speaks well for it

Assuming it's a 4" jaw... I believe you have a #744, "mechanics" vise.
They are a solid little vise, good find!

Yeah its a 4".
I'm happy with it!
My plan is to fabricate a stand that gets rid of the swivel base, paint it up in my usual dark green, and have it live in front of the shop. Not as nice as my machinists vises, but seems like a solid unit, and should be perfect for this application!

Turn in your man card! 30 day suspension. Either that or convince us your wife/girlfriend typed that using your account.

Steve

They see all the stuff at my place and that is the last date with them LOL.

I have been collecting too much stuff and not accomplishing much on my car restorations much less some of the tools and vises I need to fix up. Need to free up some space and get the cash used for the right purposes. My 1965 Mercury Cyclone, 1966 F100, 1967 Bronco, 1968 Ford Torino convertible factory Indy Pace Car replica and my wrecked 2003 Lightning all need some work done on them and some funds!

Finally took the athol 623 out of the simple green. I just quickly assembled it and I've never seen a center swivel bolt have such tight tolerances. I guess that's the high quality of craftsmanship you get from a toolmaker that made vises.

The thing to do on that Craftsman 5198 is bid early and bid fairly large, it will sit at that spot till the last rushing moments. You will lose at the very end, but at least you will feel like a Vise God for the next couple of days.
