Time for a photo update please.

Tomorrow. I'm about beat right at the moment. We got the walls up for the bumpout, and tomorrow we will start on the walls for the main addition. Momma pulled me aside to help put together a grill a little while ago, so we been working on that. I'll have some pics tomorrow though, I promise.

Here's a few pics to show that we did get something done yesterday. The first pic is before the walls for the bumpout added on. I can't take an inside pic until I get it under roof, then I can cut the doorway in from the inside,

The rain is putting a halt on things today, but I have a lot of studs to cut to length when it stops raining for a little while this afternoon. Then tomorrow, we start putting the walls together.

Kevin: nice looking work on the bump out. with 80's and raining maybe you can pretend you are in Maui where it rains all the time on some part of the island. here's a double rainbow i took from my room last month and hopefully you get a rainbow (or two) and mostly sunshine today.

good luck

cheers

We don't get the rainbows though. Heck it rained most of the day yesterday, this morning, supposed to rain tonight, tomorrow, but nice Sunday, then right back into rain. I've even seen a few mosquitoes with life jackets on.

We did get all of the studs cut yesterday though in between the rain, so today should go fairly well until it rains again late this afternoon. I'll be glad if we just get one wall up and braced, which is going to be one heavy sumbitch, unless we sheet it after it's up.

Nice job on the bumpout - that looks good so far.

For the long wall, you might try sheeting just the ends on the ground before lifting it, and then finishing the rest of the sheeting in place.

Is the bump out getting rafters off of the garage end wall or trusses running the same direction as the garage ?

The trusses will run the same direction as the trusses on the roof now, only dropped down about a foot underneath the existing trusses

looks good so far kev.

Do you go out and just stare at the addition and dream about how nice it will be?

I'm waiting for pics from inside the bump out?

You could just jump off the roof to get in there and set up camp and run the rest of the build from there?

Sort of like a bunker command post?

Keep up the great work kevin

One wall up yesterday, then we got rained out. Craig might stop this afternoon and possibly tomorrow as it is supposed to rain next week. We are just stuck in limbo with this wet stuff. Anyways, here is what we got done, and for Sublime, a pic from inside the bumpout, although it doesn't look like much.

Building the garage and helping did give me the opportunity to buy a new tool though :rocker: The framing nailer that was being used kept jamming, so when I was at Lowes picking up my entrance door, I was looking at framing nailers. They had a Paslode nailer that will use both 16's and 8's on sale for $229, marked down from $279. Seeing that it was a display, I was able to get it for $195.....10% off, and another 5% because I used my Lowes card. In trying it out, it worked fine, so I looked at the other nailer, and the angle of the nails were completely wrong. I bought what the guy (Dan) told me to buy. Come to find out, his nailer uses 20 degree clipped, and I had a box of 30 degree clipped nails. No wonder it was jamming. So now I have my own nailer  And it will get used quite a bit as I have a fence to put up between the neighbor and I later on, and the wife wants a couple of arbors made. So I'm set now!!!

There you go! New project, new tool! (That's one of the rules, right?)

Haven't posted to your threads before, but have read through a few. Thanks for being such a HUGE contributor to the Journal! Following along for the ride, and hoping for blue skies your way.

Yep....that's the rule :rocker: I've so far gained a new framing nailer and a new to me transit with tripod for cheap. Momma told me that if I need it, to just go buy one so I will have it. God I love that woman

coming along! going to be nice when done. on those paslode nailers, a friend put an addition on his house and the buddy that helped him brought his paslode. my friend loved it so much (no hoses and light) that he had to run out and get his own for other projects.

Looking good, hopefully the rain will let up enough to get some more done. It can't rain forever, right?

Wrong!!!! I think it's already rained forever, and more on the way. It was supposed to clear up this afternoon some, and rain this morning, but just the opposite happened. We had some sunshine this morning, and has been between sprinkling and drizzling all afternoon. And on top of that, the temps have dropped most of the day, and right now it is currently 57f. Not too warm for it being almost July. I had a sleeveless T-shirt on and had to go in and put on a long sleeve. Then momma called me from the house a little while ago and asked what I wanted for supper. I didn't know (as usual) but then she told me that she made Chili for supper:lol_hitti One's not supposed to have Chili in the summertime. I don't think I'm going to complain though.

Kevin: nice to see you are making progress and very happy to see the first wall of the new garage standing and already Tyveked.

i have a couple questions and hope you don't mind.

1) Are you loosing a foot of ceiling height in the bump out by lower the new roof over it?

2) Are you leaving the old roof on over the old garage and just nailing the new tresses and roof on top of it? i looks like all you did was remove the gutters?

congrats and hoping your weather gives you a break.

Drives.......the bumpout will have an 8' ceiling, the same as the existing garage. The trusses are dropping lower than the existing trusses because the depth is different. The garage is 28' deep, and the bumpout is going to be 24' deep. The difference in depth makes the trusses a different height to one another.

The old roof......all of the old roofing is going to come off. Once it's off, then we can nail a couple of 2x's down for the new rafter to sit on. This will insure that we will have a solid base all of the way up for the rafters to sit on instead of just nailing down to the sheeting and either hitting a rafter below or just nailing into OSB. I want things to be as secure as possible.

And once all of the old roofing is off, it will be reroofed to match the house now. Sadly though, I will be putting down three-tab shingles to match. The reason for doing that is all for the fact that the roof on the house is only two years old. I figure I will get 15 years (maybe) out of the new roof on the house. By roofing the garage the same, not only will it match the house, but I figure 13-15 years out of it also. Then when it goes bad, right there with the house roof, it will be replaced with a metal roof. And that will be the last roof that I will ever have to worry about. The garage has never matched the house as the house is stained cedar, and the garage is a beige vinyl. I want everything to match for once. And with everything matching, it will work better for keeping the value of the house and property up. It will work better towards the equity in the place than it would with one cedar siding, and the other a different color vinyl.

Kevin: sounds good. great plan on the matching roofs and siding. Street appeal is a good portion of what a buyer determines value off of. appraisers not so much, but if a buyer puts enough down payment and doesn't borrow the max appraisers are not as quite as picky. it's the minimum down buyers that have a PMI or Va buyer's loans that get the picky appraisals. even though you only have a couple acres having all that extra ground you mow that almost looks like your yard also adds to the value.

keep up the great work and thanks for explaining more of your build.

cheers

We have nicer weather up here for a change...it is a crazy weather pattern we have been in...mother natures way of cooling the planet, I suppose.
I am watching on the sidelines and wishing you all the best for better weather.

Just goes to show the vast diversity of this country. Some parts are being soaked while other parts are unseasonably hot and enduring drought. And we're all complaining about it.

Kevin great work. So the house is wood cedar sided?
Or cedar looking vinyl?
Since your in rain delay any chance of a house pic?
Thanks for the inside bumpout pic, or as I call it command post lol

I have somewhat the same problem my house is cedar siding with metal green roof and window trim
Have 2 nd building which was photo studio with t11 siding and brown metal roof.
Garage I'm building slowly has brown metal roof, t11 on 3 sides, windows with green trim
And the left over cedar siding on the front over the garage door that faces towards the house.
Just to try and make it match somewhat and look good.

Good luck with your weather.

Sub......I'll have to find a pic of the house. It is cedar lap siding stained in a very dark brown. That is what I'm going to go with on the garage. There will be a few minor differences from the house and garage though. On the windows, I am going to picture frame them. That way if I ever would have to change one, I can pop off the frame trim, then remove the window. Most will not even notice the difference though. As far as the lap siding, I am going to go with a 6" exposure vs. the 5" exposure that is on the house. Again, no one will probably even notice. My wife's building which is 15 feet away from the house has 6" exposure and no one has ever noticed. It will save me a few bucks going with 6" instead of 5".

We did get another wall up yesterday (pics later), then the guys had to leave as one guy had a golf outing planned with his dad. So I ended up cutting down a couple of large pine trees and cleaning that up. Today I have to pick up a few more studs and tomorrow we are going to get the front wall framed out. THen that will be it until my rafters arrive next week (hopefully). Once they arrive, we can get the roof on and that buttoned up. So we are slowly getting there, raindrop by raindrop:lol:

No work going on today other than me making a lumber run. We are having rain again, plus I had to run momma to the docs in Columbus for her checkup at the Cancer Center, which is where I'm at right at the moment

Kevin, get some rest man and don't over do it. It appears that your posting here has dropped off substantially since you started work on the addition. You're no spring chicken anymore, take care of yourself my friend.

EDIT: . . . and bam as I'm typing, kevins shows up to make a post.

Does your local code allow the use of clipped nails?

I just ask, as mine does not and it was a consideration when I bought my framing nailer.

I was killing tie on Susan G Komen's computer while momma was getting her checkup  And don't worry, not overdoing it. Can't overdo it in the rain. Luckily though we got all of the mowing in yesterday afternoon as there is water in the pasture and yards today and it's still coming down. It's supposed to be out of here about noon, but I won't hold my breath on that. And I have to make a lumber run here afterwhile.

Don't really know, but they get used quite extensively around here. California may have stricter regulations also due to the earthquakes :dunno:

Good luck with the weather cooperating Kevin. Sounds like things are coming along. And I'll go along with Nutts. Take it easy. You don't need any extra problems arising.

Sublime......here is what the house looks like. If you look at the house, it is a 5" overlap. The wifes building and the shed has a 6" overlap. And the mismatched garage has a double 4 overlap:lol: Plus you can tell that the garage no ways comes close to matching anything else. It's sort of been a thorn in my side for years, but you do what you can at the time, and back when I built the garage, cedar was not an option.

Also you can see where I moved the shed to. I think it looks a little better up by the evergreens, where it is close to the garden.

Drives......momma's checkup went fine. She has 3 more 6 month checkups, then she can go for quite a while between as she will hit her 5 year remission mark next year. This Fall will be her 4 year mark for being in remission :rocker::rocker::rocker:

Kevin,

I wandered in here looking for ideas for my garage remodel and stumbled on your build thread.

I bet we know a lot of the same people. My brother owns the laundromat in town. Yea, the one that has been completely remodeled.

I grew up out on Middle Urbana Rd. As soon as I saw "Short Cut" I knew exactly what house you were....my brother lives at the corner of Post and Urbana Morefield. The house with all the landscaping and big building out back.

I'm headed your way for a wedding August 15. It's on the farm across the road from Carter Lumber. I'll be there the entire week after screwing off. I'll help out around there if you need it. Just feed me. LOL....

I can guess who you had bids from....my brother has done EVERYTHING at the laundromat because the contractors around there are complete morons. Even the one guy I could recommend lacks in finishing details. Hard worker though....

Does the guy you are using live out by La Palma restaurant by chance?

Try and stay dry....

Chris
