Here's a sample of how I painted my tools when I was doing installations. It didn't make them look pretty, but it was functional. Power tools, extension cords, and air hoses were marked as well. Even people I never worked with knew my tools and wouldn't touch them without permission. (I was a notorious *** about my tools and word spread quickly, by design

Paint was a better way to spot one of my tools in someone else's toolbox before it left the jobsite than engraving. Other than losing a weekend repainting all my tools once a year it was an easy way to keep track of my tools.
The only tool I lost in 15yrs was a prybar. It showed up 2 1/2 years later when the exhibit that was on tour returned to my museum. Another worker saw it in the crate and held onto it for me for another 3 months until we met up. That tool has traveled more than I have.
