Now 2 of my 3 nephews have their 1/3-HP Block grinders.

FedEx did an excellent wrapping and packing job; children were not included. :lol_hitti

Fireman: i'm not sure you already mentioned this, but did you have to buy the shields, tool rests and water tray to complete your 3/4 HP grinder from before to after? did you make the new badge or do tell if you haven't already.

BTW what an amazing transformation.

DOC: your nephew is a bit young to be getting a serious tool like a block. or are your relatives pretty much able to use a block at birth. :lol_hitti

The grinder had it all except the shields were plastic. I had the label printed online. The web site is Uprinting.com had to design it with their software and they print it. The only draw back is you have to order 25, which is their minimum order.

Fireman: so you have 24 more labels that are for a 3/4 HP block? i haven't found one yet and they are not exactly common so i hope you got a good deal.
again your block looks amazing and i really like your choice of wheels.

have you used the grinder for a project yet? i hope you are using a full face shield and maybe some thick clothing.

The wife and I took a little 360 mile rnd trp today to rescue these

1/4hp no date on the plate, missing eye shields, wheel covers and the rt inner guard is broken. Runs smooth and quite .

I think I might turn it into a small wire wheel machine for light work.

The one I really wanted is this 1/2-HP industrial beauty.

The only thing that it's missing is the rt side wheel cover. It does seem to have some vibration that I'll have to figure out and I'll have to replace the safety glass in the left eye shield.

Harley: sounds like a fun road trip.

ALL: this Block set up as a buffer has an interesting box built to contain the debris. the seller wants a Benjamin for it and it looks like a 1/3 HP. first block I've seen in my area in a while. Anybody else build a box or cover for their blocks?

one of our members Ainsley built a nice system to collect the debris and dust from his grinders so check out posts #74, 80, & 86 have pictures and information about the system. here's the link

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=272678&highlight=Ainsley

Ainsley's
garage is only a one car garage so you might also read the thread to find some good storage ideas. also if you find something you like on the thread make a post to let him know you liked something.

I may have to hit you up for one of your extra labels if and of course it is a big if I get the one that is up for auction here.

I have a question about a grinder that I own, and this looks like the place to ask. I have a model 397.19590 that gets quite hot to the touch after it has been running for awhile. I also have a model 115.19500 and a 115.6965. I let those two run for the same amount of time as the 397.19590. Very little heat build up. Is this normal or is it because the one running hot is made of a lighter metal (aluminum?) while the other two are cast iron? It may not make a difference, but I just changed the bearings on the 397.

Woot! I just scored another one. Only one more to go and I can quit (If I want to)

MODEL # 297.19451. 115 VOLT, TWIST LOCK PLUG, 3/4 HP.

Paid $28.50

I have to say that this is the roughest looking one so far but I have been looking for the 3/4 hp for quite awhile.

Now I just need to find a 1hp.

Pick up is on Friday, I will have to give it a good test run and to do that I will have to change out the plug, not a big deal I have many in the shop just waiting for a cord to mate up with.

Picked up this one yesterday.
It's pretty clean but could stand a new paint job still and is missing the rh cover. I think I can make one from a piece of sheet steel

Thumper: your 3/4 HP looks a little rough now, but if you want to see what one looks like that was maybe in similar condition can look like with a few Benjamins thrown at it take a look at McB's blockmeister thread. i guess Fireman is going to be down to 23 labels shortly.

cheers and congrats

Dragoon: looks ok from the picture of what we can see so if you want to post a thumbnail picture so we can see your entire block use the paperclip method i use that is just above where you are writing your posts.

OKC: was your 397 still running hot after you changed the bearings? if so how about taking a few pictures if you can and post them. it shouldn't run hot as far as i know and thinking the bearings were the fix.

All: i think i found a good spot for my 1/2 HP commercial block. it needs some new rubber feet even though the originals are not too bad, new wire wheel(s) and some spiffing.

i hate to tell you guys this, but i turned it on and it purred and the light worked too. it's been sitting for maybe a year or two since i bought it back in a corner of my shop. then after turning it off the damn thing just kept purring for about a minute.

i'm sure happy i bought this block and the original stones were hardly used by the original owner i bought it from. i might keep one stone and make the other a wire wheel since it's at my house's garage and not the shop.

now i have a nice Craftsman stand i have to figure out what to do with. :dunno:

cheers all

CRAFTSMAN bench grinder...heavy duty - $50

CRAFTSMAN bench grinder...heavy duty....7 ".....3/4 hp....works fine....#257.192170.....$50.00....questions welcome

This is the same guy that had the 5197 that Marty bought.

I'd like to pick up a 3/4hp, but I've never cared for the early 80's black BG's. They changed the style a little bit and the label is just boring. IMO. The price isn't bad though.

Drives, you want to keep in mind grinders/wire wheels are VERY messy, so I'd suggest getting covers on those electrical boxes, and use maybe a child proof cap in unused receptacles. (think of iron dust and/or wires flying into the outlet slots...)

Heck, even with all that a simple cardboard or plastic guard taped to the wall to keep grit out of the switch...

Yeah that one has been listed for like a month now. I tried to convince the guy to meet me closer but he never responded. The. I lost interest in the 80s style block.

That looks nice. I like the cabinet. Looks like mine I got from squashfest81. But I agree with outlaws comments below.

I agree. I actually started taking my bench grinder outside when possible to use it due to the metal flying everywhere. You definitely don't want metal going into the switch and outlet boxes.
